New Review of Daybreak

Book Review - Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union by David Swanson
By Dave Berman, OpEdNews

Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union is the first book from David Swanson, a prominent national activist organizer known for ProsecuteBushCheney.org, AfterDowningStreet.org and his work with Progressive Democrats for America and Democrats.com. Swanson's pedigree might suggest a partisan perspective but his book reveals a utopian idealist equally critical of President Obama, both parties, and the supposed two-party system. He is deeply devoted to restoring the rule of law through populist policies, wide-ranging reforms, and most demonstrably his own direct actions.

Bringing Oligarchs Under the Rule of Law

By Charlotte Dennett

If there is one sentence in David Swanson’s remarkable book that bears repeating, it is this: “The first step in closing down an empire is bringing its emperors and oligarchs under the rule of law.”

I say this with the confidence that there are millions of Americans who are alarmed by Washington’s unconstitutional support for endless wars abroad and the accompanying erosion of democracy at home. David Swanson’s book ("Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidenct and Forming a More Perfect Union") provides an insight-packed roadmap on how to “undo the imperial presidency.” I’m going to use his book in my classroom and encourage others to do the same as we try to awaken a younger generation to the need to save our country from its seemingly inexorable slide toward fascism.

"Daybreak" Reviewed in "Too Much"

Too Much is an online weekly on excess and inequality. This week's edition features a review of David Swanson's "Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming A More Perfect Union." It begins:

These two new books, at any first glance, don’t have much in common. The first, Daybreak, comes from David Swanson, a journalist turned activist who spent the Bush years mobilizing Americans against unchecked executive branch power. He writes to help fashion — and inspire — real “citizen power.”

Paul Theobald, the author of the second, teaches at Buffalo State. In Education Now, this scholar takes us back to the 17th and 18th centuries and helps us understand how the ideas that took root in those years have evolved — for better and worse — to shape our democracy, our workplaces, and our schools.

Both these books, as intriguing as their subjects may be, wouldn’t normally be topics for Too Much review. But both authors come to a conclusion that, in the end, makes them absolutely appropriate candidates for Too Much attention.

The United States, both authors contend, will never move significantly beyond our various social, political, and economic imperfections so long as Americans let unlimited wealth and income concentrate in the hands of a precious few. Read more.
