"David Swanson's Daybreak impressively exposes all the ways our government has changed for the worse under the Bush administration, and makes clear that we need to do far more than elect a new president to see our tattered Democracy restored." -- Vincent Bugliosi, author, former federal prosecutor

"Daybreak offers a powerful and compelling picture of what real change in America could look like. The world needs more true advocates of democracy like David Swanson!" -- Thom Hartmann, Author, The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight

Tom Juravich & David Swanson on the Surreal News

FRIDAY: The Surreal News at the “Altar Of The Bottom Line” with singer-author Tom Juravich
& David Swanson from AfterDowningStreet.org, Daybreak on Obama Afgan Surge

December 3rd, 2009 by WSLR 96.5 LPFM

When: Friday, Dec 4, from 9 to 10 a.m. EST
Where: The Surreal News on WSLR 96.5 LP FM

The Surreal News welcomes singer-songwriter, author and labor activist Tom Juravich, who recently released a new roots-rocking musical CD and a book sharing the same name: “Altar of the Bottom Line.”
Using two different media mediums, Juravich paints intimate portraits of the everyday struggles and dreams of workers.

Tom Juravich began singing professionally about work and labor back in late early 1980s, in the middle of the first wave of plant closings in the U.S. His first album, “Rising Again” was sponsored by the United Auto Workers in 1981.
He went on to record “A World to Win,” of which Edward Clark, from the clothing workers’ union wrote: “Your songs smell to me like thread, cloth, factory machine oil, social justice and creative genius.”
His album “Out of Darkness: The Mine Workers Story,” became the soundtrack for a film about the coal-miners’ union.

Surreal News hosts Steve and Larry along with Author David Swanson will also take a look President Obama’s plans to escalate the war efforts in Afghanistan.

Each episode of The Surreal News features “A Tannen Weekly” by humorist Pete Tannen, a Media Matters Minute and plenty of under reported news items.

It's a solo effort for Steve this time, as he interviews author and activist David Swanson about his new book, Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union (from Seven Stories Press).  Learn why the President holds all the cards in the U.S. Government, and why that's a very bad thing - and how you, as citizens, can fix it!  And why both Steve and David both consider themselves democratic activists - with a decidedly small "d"!

David mentions the hoped-for impeachment of Jay Bybee.  Who's he, and why should he be impeached?  Glad you asked!

Also, we give a big shout-out to all of the artists who've made music on the Secret Frequency such a treat for our listeners.  Listen for news of new CD releases and upcoming shows by your favorites!  Some extra music on this segment from electronic and ambient artist Luigi Saracino - check out his blog!

What powers were stripped from Congress and handed to the White House, and what will it take to permanently move them back? Which of these powers is Barack Obama making use of or even expanding upon? And in the future, how can we embellish our rights, create democratic representation in Congress, and make presidents into executives rather than emperors? These questions are addressed as David Swanson visits Orange County to talk about his new book, Daybreak: The Undoing Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union
(Seven Stories Press; September 15, 2009).

Hosted by the Patrick Henry Democratic Club. Endorsed by Code Pink, Orange County Peace Coalition, Progressive Democrats of America, and

Lila Garrett of KPFK Interviews Rep. Kucinich & David Swanson, Who Appears Tonight in Marr Vista!

Listen here.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich tells us what happened to his amendment to allow States to select Single Payer Healthcare no matter what plan the Congress comes up with. The Kucinich Amendment was passed by the House but did not appear in the final bill. The Whitehouse stopped it. We ask, for what reason? And with such hobbled Healthcare bills coming from both the House and Senate how do we get to Single Payer from here?

What about Afghanistan? More troops? No troops? Something in between? The President is holding the world in suspense waiting for his decision. Meanwhile, what's in store for our people and theirs in that ravaged country? Former head UN weapons Inspector Scott Ritter joins us for that discussion and the launching of “theveteransproject.org”...a new, much needed program.

And David Swanson previews his new book Daybreak. How much "change" has Obama, the Prophet of change, delivered? What does the future hold? Should our 200 year old Constitution be rewritten? Think big! Do we actually need a Senate or a Supreme Court?

Swanson, a consummate political analyst, also appears in person tomorrow night (Monday Nov. 23rd) at St. Bede's Church 3590 Grandview in Marr Vista. The evening is moderated by Marcy Winograd and Lila Garrett of (Host of CONNECT THE DOTS) KPFK 90.7 FM in LA; 98.7 Santa Barbara. Listen here.

Peace activisit and author, David Swanson visited the University of Maine in Orono Thursday.

He blames the Bush adminstration for expanding the powers of the presidency and deteriorating the constitution and bill of rights.

He is also critical of the Obama administration for continuing to take advantage of some of the increased presidential powers that he says president bush created.

David Swanson says "If presidents have the power to re-write laws to make new laws to imprison people without charge to spy on people without warrant to launch wars without a declaration from congress and so on and so forth that will make a difference and it is making a difference right now." Author: CIA Case Evidence Of Abuse Of Power

Author: CIA case evidence of abuse of power
By Jessica Bloch | Bangor Daily News

The news that an Italian court convicted on Wednesday a base chief for the CIA and 22 other Americans for the crime of rendition was evidence that the executive branch of the U.S. government has too much power, activist and author David Swanson told a small group of people Thursday afternoon at the University of Maine.

The crime for which the Americans were convicted surrounded the kidnapping of a Muslim cleric from the streets of Milan in 2003, according to a story Wednesday in The New York Times. The cleric was flown from an American air base in Italy to a base in Germany and then on to Egypt, where he asserts that he was tortured, the newspaper said.

“Kidnapping is still a crime in some places, but not [to U.S. government operatives]. Here it’s not a crime,” said Swanson, who spoke in the Bangor Room of the Memorial Union as part of UMaine’s Socialist and Marxist Studies Series. Swanson is on tour supporting his new book, “Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union.”

The incident in Italy may be one example that the executive branch of the U.S. government has too much power over other branches of the government and at times has overstepped Congress, he said. Read more.
