Statement on Prosecution of Former High Officials
We urge Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a non-partisan independent Special Counsel to immediately commence a prosecutorial investigation into the most serious alleged crimes of former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Richard B. Cheney, the attorneys formerly employed by the Department of Justice whose memos sought to justify torture, and other former top officials of the Bush Administration.
Our laws, and treaties that under Article VI of our Constitution are the supreme law of the land, require the prosecution of crimes that strong evidence suggests these individuals have committed. Both the former president and the former vice president have confessed to authorizing a torture procedure that is illegal under our law and treaty obligations. The former president has confessed to violating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
We see no need for these prosecutions to be extraordinarily lengthy or costly, and no need to wait for the recommendations of a panel or “truth” commission when substantial evidence of the crimes is already in the public domain. We believe the most effective investigation can be conducted by a prosecutor, and we believe such an investigation should begin immediately.

I'm pretty sure most progressive/liberal Democratic blogs will post this, there's the matter of the Huffington Post. I know Arianna thinks she's the next best thing to buttered bread but do you think she'd have the cajones to put this someplace prominent on her website? I know it's become a weak, watered down wannabe progressive blog, but they DO get massive traffic there. You've probably already considered it, but I thought it worth throwing out there. Let's see if she's serious or just a self-aggrandizing beltway pundit like most of them. Tell her to put her money where her mouth is!

Bush, Cheney and any other administration members who broke the law/committed treason should be prosecuted. As this post notes, Bush and Cheney have admitted their involvement in torture- and Bush to warrantless spying- for Holder to not prosecute these alone would be dereliction of duty (perhaps motivated by cowardice).
This is a good start, but it shouldn't stop here; the deceptions that led to the Iraq War and the US attorney firings need to be fully investigated- and so does the failure to prevent the 9/11 attacks, which gave the Bush administration their perceived license to subvert the Constitution and go on imperialist rampages.
As 9/11 Commissioner Bob Kerrey referred to a "credible case" for Bush's negligence contributing to 9/11, in an interview with Paula Zahn after the 2004 election, saying,
"The 9/11 report in chapter eight says that, in the summer of 2001, the government ignored repeated warnings by the CIA, ignored, and didn’t do anything to harden our border security, didn’t do anything to harden airport country, didn’t do anything to engage local law enforcement, didn’t do anything to round up INS and consular offices and say we have to shut this down, and didn’t warn the American people."

The president says, if I had only known that 19 Islamic men would come into the United States of America and on the morning of 11 September hijack four American aircraft, fly two into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and one into an unknown Pennsylvania that crashed in Shanksville, I would have moved heaven and earth. That’s what he said.
Mr. President, you don’t need to know that. This is an Islamic jihadist movement that has been organized since the early 1990s, declared war on the United States twice, in ‘96 and ‘98. You knew they were in the United States. You were warned by the CIA. You knew in July they were inside the United States. You were told again by briefing officers in August that it was a dire threat.
And what did you do? Nothing, so far as we could see on the 9/11 Commission. Now, that’s in the report. And we took an oath not to talk about it during the campaign, I think correctly so, to increase the capacity of that commission’s report to be heard by the people’s Congress.

I lived in Chucky Tn. for 7 years (between Greeneville Tn. and Hot Springs N.C.) on the Nolichuckey River about a mile downstream from Davey Crocket's homestead/birthplace. I met a girl while working through there (testing rail) and bought a truck (that I gave to her) for the weekend instead of renting a car and she was my designated "indian guide" for the weekend. She decided to take me into the mountains to Paint Creek (Paint or painter is what they call a mountain lion) and on our way in, we came upon some railroad tracks (Clinchfield RR) and she came to a stop (as I was a passenger too drunk on mountain dew) and looked over at me and asked "is they airy a train a comin'?" I knew right there and then that I was going to stay awhile :) Some of my wildest and sublime memories are back there, still.

Whoever created this petition should consider alerting organizations and individuals who support this idea but who aren't progressives. I'm thinking in particular of Bruce Fein (conservative Republican), the Cato Institute (possibly), The John Birch Society, etc. Have any of these non-progressive individuals or organizations been contacted? All of them have written critical pieces on the Bush administration's torture policies and may well want to join this coalition. What's more it's harder for the media to label this as just "liberal score-settlers" when you have people and organizations from a wide range of political beliefs.

I really think having as many people as possible from varied political perspectives would make for a very powerful petition.
Well, I decided to go ahead and contact the Cato Institute and the John Birch Society myself. I have no idea if they will participate in this petition (I hope they will) but I think it's important for them to be invited to join us because unlike the distorted media narrative, we all know that this issue is not about political vengeance, it's about accountability and adherence to the rule of law. And anyone who is for that, no matter what their political leanings might be on other issues, is certainly welcome in my book to join this effort.

You most definitely need to get in touch with the Zeitgeist Movement, which is an extremely strong movement of young people who are demanding and needing to know the truth about the many crimes committed by the so-called Bush "administration". As President Barack Obama took his oath of office on January 20, 2009, and assumed the total responsibilities of his high office, tackling the absolute mess left to him by his predecessor, George W. Bush got to fly out of town in style on Air Force One, never being held accountable to the American people for any of his potential and probable high crimes, misdemeanors, and misdeeds, during his two terms.

Amid the criticism that has already emerged about President Obama's reported pick for the powerful position of chairman of the National Intelligence Council, there is a yet unmentioned problem that is likely cause even bigger troubles: He had business ties to the bin Laden family after 9/11.
Charles “Chas” Freeman, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, had business connections with the bin Laden family and their Saudi Binladin Group, a multi-billion dollar construction conglomerate founded by the father of Osama bin Laden. As chairman of Projects International, Inc., a company that develops international business deals, Mr. Freeman asserted in an interview with the Associated Press less than a month after September 11 that he was still “discussing proposals with the Bin Laden Group—and that won't change.”
This is the height of irresponsibility. Is there anyone in his administration that isn't tainted with the stink of corruption or treason?

you are doing selective history here or you are badly informed. Mr. Freeman could have been an excellent choice for this post, but knew that he would be driven insane by
the constant rantings of Zionists. He sadly withdrew himself
from consideration for the post knowing all too well that what he would have to deal with from AIPAC would be beyond the call of duty.
Yesterday I contacted the John Birch Society and the Cato Institute because I thought both of them might be interested in joining with us on this petition. I'm happy to say that I received a positive response from the John Birch Society today. They are indeed interested in joining with us on this issue. I gave them a link to this website and hopefully we will soon see their organization listed on this petition.
I've not yet heard from the Cato Institute but I will follow up with them tomorrow if I don't hear anything today.

Dear Americans,
From a U.S. perspective, the slumbering North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, may not deserve a lot of attention. Nevertheless, there is good reason to pay attention to current events in the NATO alliance, where the next secretary general will expectedly be appointed in a few weeks from now.
One of the candidates to the posting is an infamous Danish war criminal, who was an accomplice to your former president George W. Bush's aggression on Iraq. His name is Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and he currently holds the position of prime minister of Denmark. Not that the office of NATO secretary general is in any way influential, but appointing Fogh Rasmussen for the office would imply the honouring a man of ill reputation.
If the U.S. should at one point impeach George W. Bush for misconducting his office during his eight-year reign, it would seem awkward to have one of his European sycophants as head of the NATO alliance.
Five years ago, when I was employed by the Danish defence intelligence service (the equivalent of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency), I disclosed secret reports, mostly copied from documents received from the U.S. and the U.K., revealing that Fogh Rasmussen lied intentionally to the Danish parliament, when he claimed to have firm intelligence documenting that Iraq under its former dictator Saddam Hussein was defying U.N. resolutions demanding it to cease its WMD programs and allow for inspections.
For this my contribution to shed light on the events leading to a motley U.S.-headed group of states invading Iraq in March 2003 without a U.N. mandate, I served four months in prison where, on top of the incarceration proper, my under-age daughter was harrassed by the Danish authorities.
Under normal circumstances, I would be proud to see a Dane as head of an international organization, but not this one, who should be tried according to the Nuremberg charter as an international major war criminal.
Matters aren't settled yet, so I strongly urge all of you Americans to put pressure on the U.S. government to refuse Fogh Rasmussen's candidacy.

The Massachusetts State Democratic Party convention was held June 5th and 6th in Springfield, MA. The assembled passed this resolution calling for the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute war crimes and violations of our Constitution, Federal and international laws, and treaties.
MASSACHUSETTS STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY RESOLUTION on ACCOUNTABILITY and the RULE OF LAW
Whereas the Massachusetts Democratic Party supports the Rule of Law in the federal government and elsewhere; and
Whereas the Massachusetts Democratic Party reveres the Constitution of the United States and finds abhorrent acts contrary to its intent, such as excessive executive privilege leading to "preemptive" war and torture
