Hinchey To Host Two Community Forums
To Discuss Implications Of Downing Street Memos
Congressman Will Visit Binghamton and New Paltz To Highlight Bush Administration's Deception and Manipulation Of The American Public and Media Surrounding Iraq War
Washington, DC - Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) will hold two community forums next week to discuss the implications of the Downing Street memos and other information recently uncovered that further calls into question the Bush Administration's case for war in Iraq. Hinchey's first community forum on the Downing Street memos will take place on Wednesday, July 6 from 5:00-7:00pm at the Christ Episcopal Church located at the corner of Henry and Washington Streets in Binghamton. On Thursday, July 7, Hinchey will hold the second forum from 7:00-9:00pm at the Coykendall Science Building Auditorium at SUNY New Paltz.
"These forums will help raise public awareness about the Bush Administration's widespread efforts to deceive the American people and media into thinking the president viewed war with Iraq as a last resort when it was his first choice all along," Hinchey said. "President Bush wanted to attack Iraq from the first days of his presidency and the Downing Street memos prove that he was willing to manipulate the public into thinking that Iraq was tied to the September 11th attacks and that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and were poised to used them against the United States. The president misled the Congress and the American people and I encourage all of my constituents to come out to these forums and learn more for themselves."
SUNY New Paltz Journalism Professor Rob Miraldi will join Hinchey at the New Paltz forum to discuss the news media's coverage of the Downing Street memos and the Iraq war overall.
Hinchey was an outspoken critic of the Iraq war in the months leading up to the invasion and has continued to speak out in strong opposition to the occupation of Iraq. The congressman is a member of the recently formed "Out of Iraq" congressional caucus. Hinchey has called for the timely and responsible removal of U.S. troops from Iraq and has said that the U.S. should commit more resources to fighting al Qaeda, which represents the primary threat to U.S. national security.
