Hinchey, Eight Members Of Congress To Hold Nationwide Town Hall Meetings On Downing Street Memos & Ongoing Deception In Iraq

Meetings To Coincide With Third Anniversary Of Downing Street Meeting

Washington, DC -- In commemoration of the third anniversary of the now infamous Downing Street Meeting, Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) and eight of his colleagues in the House will host town hall meetings across the country to discuss the manipulation of pre-war intelligence, the unclassified Downing Street memos, and the current state of the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Hinchey will participate in an event entitled, "Torture and Lies: Who Is Accountable? From Abu Ghraib to the Downing Street Minutes" that will be held on Saturday, July 23 from 2:00-4:00pm at the New York Society for Ethical Culture located at 2 W. 64th Street in New York City. The event is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.

"Three years after the Downing Street meeting, the American public still has not gotten a straight answer from President Bush about when he decided to take this country to war in Iraq and why he misled the nation into believing there were weapons of mass destruction there," Hinchey said. "These forums across the country will present an opportunity for my colleagues and I to present the facts to the American people about what we do know to be the truth -- that President Bush was committed to going to war with Iraq from virtually the first day of his presidency and his administration was willing to lie and manipulate the truth to achieve that goal."

Over the past two months, 131 Members of Congress have written President Bush and some 575,000 people have signed a petition demanding answers from the White House on a variety of questions surrounding pre-war and post-war Iraq. All of these inquiries have gone unanswered. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are informed, organized, and waiting for a response to these letters. Because they continue to be met with silence, Members of Congress will now be taking this issue directly to the American people in the hopes that the Administration will finally be held accountable.

With the Bush Administration remaining silent on the many pressing questions surrounding the Downing Street memos, Hinchey intends to introduce a resolution of inquiry in the House later this week or early next week that would force the Bush Administration to make public all of the information it has regarding the meetings referenced in the Downing Street memos.

The Nation magazine and Democrats.com are sponsoring the event Hinchey is attending on July 23. The congressman is one of three panelists at the two-hour event, which will also feature Liz Holtzman, a former Congresswoman from New York who served on the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment of President Nixon, as well as Randi Rhodes who hosts The Randi Rhodes Show, the hugely popular afternoon show on Air America Radio. Hinchey and the other panelists will take questions from the audience following their presentations.

"With events spread out across the nation to raise awareness of the Downing Street memos and the illegal war in Iraq as well as the torture and abuse of prisoners, we are seeking to finally get the Bush Administration and the Republican-controlled Congress to be up front and honest with the American people and the world about their motives and actions surrounding the war," Hinchey said.

Hinchey has held two community forums this month in his congressional district to discuss the Downing Street memos with his constituents. He will be holding a third community forum on the topic in Ithaca, New York on Saturday, July 30.

The other members of Congress who will be hosting Downing Street forums in their respective states are: Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee), Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA), Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA), Congressman Tom Udall (D-NM), Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Congressman Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), and Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-NY).

If you're planning to go to this forum, try to find two people who are uninformed or misinformed on these subjects, invite them to come along, ask them to keep a relaxed and open mind- they might just be suprised, and they'll probably leave HOPPING MAD!if we can reach a new audience, these forums are a powerful tool. If not, we're preaching to the choir.Remember that the american people are not stupid, they have been misled.Every force generates an equal counter-force. As frustrating as it can be to try to reason with some of these ill-informed people,we need to have patience and understand that they're forming their thoughts and opinions based on what they've been told. Gentle exposure to the truth and patiently answering their questions with fact-based responses will inevitably open their eyes. in-your-face attack will only trigger closed-minded counterattack. SPREAD TRUTH!

From the Washington Post - July 21, 2005

-A classified State Department memorandum central to a federal leak investigation contained information about CIA officer Valerie Plame in a paragraph marked "(S)" for secret, a clear indication that any Bush administration official who read it should have been aware the information was classified, according to current and former government officials.

-It is a federal crime, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, for a federal official to knowingly disclose the identity of a covert CIA official if the person knows the government is trying to keep it secret.

You can twist these words and spin as much as you want but we are getting closer to the truth. You know the truth. You are hiding behind a wall of lies and we are tearing it down! It would behoove you to come clean now if you desire to save face. If this drags out any longer then you can rest assured that we the people will scream for long prison terms befitting the crimes your people have committed in our collective name! America, our great country, deserves no less.

Fire Karl Rove!

Come one, people. Don't leave me hangin'! Get those emails out while the Post is still fresh on the newsstand!!!

Blast those media outlets!!!

Get the TRUTH out!!!

We have a new "London Terror" to compete with today so it will be
hard to rise above that noise floor, but we can do it!!!

Will any of these meetings be covered by C-SPAN?

Thank You. I sent them an email.

the supposition that the general population of the country is needing
us to hold their hands to guide them to the light of truth, is, to say the least, 'absurd' and 'unreasonable' for sure.

what makes this concept even more ridiculous is that given the resources
in this country to do the research, and find truth for one's self, is
perhaps unrivaled due to a number of things: first, the population of
this country has enough leisure time (an hour a day) to do the research,
look at the existing LIES that have been told, and then sit down with
a cheap two dollar calculator and compute the odds that the same LIARS will somehow, by freak of their very nature, utter TRUTH.

the people in this country don't need someone to write a note from their collective MOMMIES out there that; "johnny has been absent from REALITY because he hasn't got the time to seekt he truth" or "sally
didn't come to the world today with one iota of a clue because she has a sore throat..." we're talking about adults, and if you insist on giving these people an excuse not to examine, seek out the truth, and be critical of known LIARS, then you do them, and yourself, a huge injustice by trying to absolve them of any responsibility to be able to discern "SHIT FROM SHINOLA", as some would put it.

so far, the RNC, and the GOP, as well as the tail between their collective legs democrats, have been too busy pumping tons of meaningless and intentionally misleading shit that certainly smells like shit, looks like shit, and if you stuck your finger in it and tasted it, would taste like shit. BULLSHIT, to be more direct.

no notes from mommy please. everyone's an adult. they need to act like adults and get the truth themselves, not get it spoon fed to them
by spin doctors with agenda's.

One of my biggest frustrations with working with Military, Law Enforcement and Intelligence Agencies over the years is the amount
of total ignorance of the very Consitution that these men and women
have sworn an oath to defend and protect among these groups.

In addition to the technical reference books that I would bring to
my classes, I would always have several copies of the US Constitution/Declaration of Independence out for my students to read.
It was always fascinating to see the mix of "Revelation/Reaction"
in the classes. The liberals were fascinated while the NEO CONS
would get mad and accuse me of "wasting time in class" as I went
through the history of Communication Law and how it has changed
since 9/11 with the Patriot Act, etc.

I find this "the authority figure in charge knows what they are doing
and all I have to do is 'follow orders' and everything will be fine"
attitude of these "guys with guns" is by far the most dangerous threat to a free society. Me? If I am going to pick up a gun
and kill someone (or flatten a village with illegal Napalm-type weapons) because someone else told me to, I want to really make
sure of what is going on. After all, the first Game Rule is:

"WE hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are LIFE, LIBERTY, and the
PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS."

Then, there is that "Thou Shalt NOT Kill" clause from the grand
poo-bah . . . but that is more of a personal thing, I guess. ;-)

Personally fascinating to me is how I went from being one of the most
in-demand International IT & Communication instructor/trainers to being out of work completely, literally overnight last year. I guess
some people just don't want their staff to understand the "big
picture." (So . .. anyone out there need a smart hippy geek with lots of road experience? :-) )

peace.
