CONYERS, SEVEN MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO HOLD TOWN HALL MEETINGS NATIONWIDE ON DOWNING STREET, ROVEGATE,AND THE ONGOING DECEPTION IN IRAQ

MEETINGS TO COINCIDE WITH THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF THE DOWNING STREET MEETING

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In commemoration of the third anniversary of the infamous Downing Street Meeting, Rep. John Conyers, Jr., along with Representatives Hinchey, Lee, McDermott, Waters, Becerra, Frank, and Rangel, will host town hall meetings nationwide to discuss the manipulation of pre-war intelligence, the unclassified Downing Street Minutes, White House improprieties committed by Karl Rove and other Bush Administration officials, and the war in Iraq. For those unable to attend a town hall meeting in their district, Americans nationwide can follow weblogs broadcasted live from each of the Members' town hall meetings, all of which will be available at one centralized location, http//:www.afterdowningstreet.org.

Over the past two months, 131 Members of Congress have written the President and some 577,000 people have signed a petition demanding answers from the White House. All of these inquiries have gone unanswered. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are informed, organized, and waiting for a response to these letters. Because they continue to be met with silence, Members of Congress will now be taking this issue directly to the American people in hope that the Administration will finally be held accountable.

Each town hall meeting will feature a variety of speakers, local celebrities and other participants, including a meeting in New York City where Congressman Maurice Hinchey will host Air America Radio's Randi Rhodes, Democrats.com President Bob Fertik, and former Congresswoman Liz Holtzman, who served on the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment of former President Richard Nixon. Other meetings throughout the country will feature such special guests as the Backbone Campaign Executive Director Bill Moyer and Lila Lipscomb, Co-Founder of Gold Star Families for Peace, in addition to local elected officials from each state.
