Cindy Sheehan Released After Arrest for Wearing Shirt

Note: Going on no sleep, Cindy plans to speak this morning on Good Morning America and the Today Show about the experience of being arrested for wearing a shirt.

The shirt Cindy was arrested for wearing. This photo was taken earlier in the day at the People's State of the Union with Congress Members Conyers and Woolsey.

Cindy Sheehan lost her son in Bush's war. Tonight she accepted an invitation from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey to attend Bush's State of the Union speech. She had told me earlier that she didn't want to go. But she ended up going. All day she had been wearing a t-shirt and a sweat shirt. When she unzipped the sweat shirt, revealing that the t-shirt displayed a count of US soldiers killed in Iraq, the Capitol Police lifted her out of her seat and hauled her off to jail. She was released over 3 hours later, charged with unlawful conduct, which carries a fine of $45. She did not see the speech and was not able to speak at the rally outside the Capitol or the viewing party at Bus Boys and Poets restaurant, as she had planned. This was completely unexpected and not planned for. Cindy is clearly tired and frustrated by the experience.

Protesters from the World-Can't-Wait event marched from the Capitol Reflecting Pool to the jail where Cindy was first taken. Both on the way there and after reaching the jail, they encountered abusive and unnecessary force from the police. One young woman was kicked in the head, and was treated in an ambulance and released.

The jail was on D Street, NE, near the Senate office buildings. The police told us they were taking Cindy to central processing at Judiciary Square and would bring her back and release her. Then they said she'd be released over there, but when we got there, they said she'd be released at a jail at 415 4th Street SW, so we headed over there, and she was in fact released. Television cameras followed the whole way. Cindy was too tired and fed-up to make a lengthy statement. She has invitations for the morning from the Today Show, Good Morning America, and others.

The Impeach Bush truck drove around the Capitol today.

Pacifica radio covered the State of the Union from Bus Boys and Poets restaurant.

A line of police faced a crowd of protesters outside the jail where Cindy was first taken.

Cindy's sister Dede Miller spoke with the police and then with the media. REPORT

As most of you have probably heard, I was arrested before the State of the Union Address tonight.

I am speechless with fury at what happened and with grief over what we have lost in our country.

There have been lies from the police and distortions by the press. (Shocker) So this is what really happened:

This afternoon at the People's State of the Union Address in DC where I was joined by Congresspersons Lynn Woolsey and John Conyers, Ann Wright, Malik Rahim and John Cavanagh, Lynn brought me a ticket to the State of the Union Address. At that time, I was wearing the shirt that said: 2245 Dead. How many more?

After the PSOTU press conference, I was having second thoughts about going to the SOTU at the Capitol. I didn't feel comfortable going. I knew George Bush would say things that would hurt me and anger me and I knew that I couldn't disrupt the address because Lynn had given me the ticket and I didn't want to be disruptive out of respect for her. I, in fact, had given the ticket to John Bruhns who is in Iraq Veterans Against the War. However, Lynn's office had already called the media and everyone knew I was going to be there so I sucked it up and went.

I got the ticket back from John, and I met one of Congresswoman Barbara Lee's staffers in the Longworth Congressional Office building and we went to the Capitol via the undergroud tunnel. I went through security once, then had to use the rest room and went through security again.

My ticket was in the 5th gallery, front row, fourth seat in. The person who in a few minutes was to arrest me, helped me to my seat.

I had just sat down and I was warm from climbing 3 flights of stairs back up from the bathroom so I unzipped my jacket. I turned to the right to take my left arm out, when the same officer saw my shirt and yelled; "Protester." He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat and roughly (with my hands behind my back) shoved me up the stairs. I said something like "I'm going, do you have to be so rough?" By the way, his name is Mike Weight.

The officer ran with me to the elevators yelling at everyone to move out of the way. When we got to the elevators, he cuffed me and took me outside to await a squad car. On the way out, someone behind me said, "That's Cindy Sheehan." At which point the officer who arrested me said: "Take these steps slowly." I said, "You didn't care about being careful when you were dragging me up the other steps." He said, "That's because you were protesting." Wow, I get hauled out of the People's House because I was, "Protesting."

I was never told that I couldn't wear that shirt into the Congress. I was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the suppression of my freedom of speech later. I was immediately, and roughly (I have the bruises and muscle spasms to prove it) hauled off and arrested for "unlawful conduct."

After I had my personal items inventoried and my fingers printed, a nice Sgt. came in and looked at my shirt and said, "2245, huh? I just got back from there."

I told him that my son died there. That's when the enormity of my loss hit me. I have lost my son. I have lost my First Amendment rights. I have lost the country that I love. Where did America go? I started crying in pain.

What did Casey die for? What did the 2244 other brave young Americans die for? What are tens of thousands of them over there in harm's way for still? For this? I can't even wear a shrit that has the number of troops on it that George Bush and his arrogant and ignorant policies are responsible for killing.

I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would have the shirt on. I did not wear it to be disruptive, or I would have unzipped my jacket during George's speech. If I had any idea what happens to people who wear shirts that make the neocons uncomfortable that I would be arrested...maybe I would have, but I didn't.

There have already been many wild stories out there.

I have some lawyers looking into filing a First Amendment lawsuit against the government for what happened tonight. I will file it. It is time to take our freedoms and our country back.

I don't want to live in a country that prohibits any person, whether he/she has paid the ulitmate price for that country, from wearing, saying, writing, or telephoning any negative statements about the government. That's why I am going to take my freedoms and liberties back. That's why I am not going to let Bushco take anything else away from me...or you.

I am so appreciative of the couple of hundred of protesters who came to the jail while I was locked up to show their support....we have so much potential for good...there is so much good in so many people.

Four hours and 2 jails after I was arrested, I was let out. Again, I am so upset and sore it is hard to think straight.

Keep up the struggle...I promise you I will too.

GSFP co-founder Cindy Sheehan was arrested last night at the state of the union address. She was invited to attend by Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey. . She was escorted into the chambers by a representative of Congresswoman Barbara Lees office. Cindy had no intention of disrupting the speech. Partly out of respect for Lynn Woolsey . It was released by someone from the capital that Cindy unfurled a banner and was disruptive.

The truth is Cindy was wearing a t-shirt the VFP had made to commemorate the grime milestone of the death of the 2000th soldier in Iraq. The shirt says 2245 dead how many more. Cindy had been wearing this shirt all day and wore it to the SOTU. I was told by a congressional staffer that as far as they were aware there was no dress code guidelines for the guests who sit in the gallery. Cindy was in the gallery.

She was seated at 8:30 pm. It was hot in the building so Cindy unzipped her sweater to remove it. Before she even had it off a capital police officer began shouting “protestor

I just heard at 12:15 p.m. today a CNN anchor comment that Cindy was arrested because she would not remove her shirt. According to Cindy she was never ASKED to remove her shirt. What kind of stanted reporting is this?

I preferably would have the dog over Sheehan. The dog is loyal, unlike the witch. Have you ever heard of non-sense that you are writing. That this war was not "just and noble" and that the president lied to America. Guess what, he did not lie, he may have passed on information that was given to him by others, but he did not tell a bold face lie. Sheehan did not give up her son, he volunteered to fight. As an activist, I know the usual way a speaker is contracted for an event . . the host organization usually pays a speaker's fee and covers travel & lodging expenses. Most events usually have a dinner and sometimes a breakfast where the speaker is not charged for attending. . . if you've ever done this circuit, you know that it is usually pretty miserable for the guest speaker and a lot of organizational work for all involved trying to pull off an event on the usual shoe-string budget. . . but I look forward to seeing the evidence of your "mother cashes in on dead son" accusation . . . for that is probably one of the most mean spirited accusations I have heard in quite some time.

As a republican, as some one who actually believes literally in the American Constitution, Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights; I ask you to reconsider the power of your words, what they leave us with in our country. Forget the rules, or attire, as a senators wife was asked to leave politely, with a shirt which said. "Support our Troops" - The Peoples house, a diverence of views, but in that house - in the peoples house- the power to represent was silenced. Can you honestly live with that fact so easily, that those who love you would not be able to support you in your final hour, when you needed someone to stand up for your belief! It's really frustrating to watch you statists bicker over what the government should do about the problems who's initial and fundamental source is the government's involvement in matters that it, by nature, should not be addressing in the first place.

Here is an opportunity to take a fresh and FUNDAMENTALLY new and different approach that would resolve your differences to your MUTUAL satisfaction.

I will read the page in the link you attached more thoughtfully. Though I will say that my husband and I, along with many others in my family and circle of friends talk about this all the time. Thanks for ending the ping-pong match that was MOST unsatisfying and depressing.

I do think that the governement has potential to do great good for people. I just don't think a currupt, fascist government wants to or will. I don't mind paying taxes if I'm getting something for it and if the money is being used to good ends. I think as a fresh solution, tax revolt is as plausible as secession.

I don't know how realistic it is, but it sure would be nice to be part of a like minded community/state/country. Not really up for a bloody battle though, which it would be no doubt. Anyway, interesting food for thought. Thanks again.

I bet the sources of financial support for Cindy Sheehan aren't going to be indicted, unlike the right wing funders and power brokers. To point to her as insincere or currupted by money is just laughable.

And why isn't she allowed to be a spokesperson for peace and governmental accountability? Why can't she be a spokesperson for Progressive ideals? Why can't the left fund spokespeople? When did that become a crime? When it comes time to debate the constitutionality of campaign finance laws, you can bet your ballot that the right is going to say that money equals free speech. So, if you are such a proponent of free speech, why isn't Cindy (and the people supporting her) allowed to exercise her rights to free speech? And since you brought up the notion of free speech, why wasn't she allowed to wear that t-shirt in the gallery?????

I bet you anything, if Bush gave her her son back, she'd go home and get a real job.

I respect that you have a different opinion. They are running low on military soldiers in Iraq, with so many killed and so many serious injuries. I hope you will sign up and defend your position.

Poor George. He can't handle the truth, so he has made it "un-patriotic" and indeed illegal to remind him of it. Had his freedom-stripping and Constitution-shredding Patriot Act already been renewed with the updates he desires, Cindy Sheehan would have not only been arrested, but also charged with a federal crime for displaying an unauthorized sign at an event of national significance.

This is what we've come to folks. One of the people, whose son paid the ultimate price for a pack of lies put forth by this president and his administration, is dragged out of the people's house for wearing the truth on a t-shirt. No profanity, no threats, no misrepresentations. Just the war criminal-in-chief's ugly truth.

If you're okay with that, fuck you. Move to Canada.

If you're NOT okay with that, ask yourself a couple of questions:
"Am I a true patriot? Am I doing everything I can to fulfill my responsibility as a freedom loving American citizen? Is there anything else I can do in the effort to bring the most corrupt, crimnal, self-serving presidential administration in the history of our country to justice?"

Citizen apathy is the lifeblood of governmental corruption. If tasks were never undertaken for fear of failure, or because the odds for success were long, we would have never gained the freedom that so many now take for granted, and that is now indeed at such great risk.

I may have quarrels with how the administration does business, but I beleive that he has done nothing immoral or illegal. And HELL NO, I am not moving to Canada. If you hate this country so much, YOU MOVE THERE. Sheehan lost all respect when she went to other countries to spread her legs for "her cause." Answer me a few questions:

If you consider Sheehan to be doing a worth while cause, who pays for her to travel from place to place?

Who feeds her? Does she make her own money or does she live off contributions that lemmings like you give her?

My personnal belive is that she is exploiting the death of her son in order to gain a profit.

If you feel so hateful towards this president, what did you feel like when Clinton was in office and actually facing impeachment preceedings?

Cindy v. Feinstein: Right Church, Wrong Pew

I was pleased to see Cindy announce that she is taking her campaign to end the war into the electoral arena.

Her name recognition and identification with the peace movement are effective counters to the money and machinery behind the hawks who dominate both the Senate and the House; if combined with a grassroots campaign effort by the anti-war majority in an intelligent and focused way, these assets could help to force fundamental change in the political climate by capturing the Democratic Party with a bottom-driven peoples movement free of the influence of big money and political cowardice.

However, the choice of Diane Feinstein as a target is a huge error - Feinstein, although she hails from California and, thus, carries some weight as a consequence, is nevertheless fairly inconsequential in the overall scheme of things. Tagging her with a large protest vote would be, unfortunately, an interesting blip on the radar of the hawks and money folks; even her defeat would be viewed as an interesting, but relatively meaningless, curiosity - nothing more.

Hillary Clinton, however, is another story. Clinton right now is viewed as the leading contender for the 2008 Presidential election, despite her hard-line position on the war. Her defeat, or even a serious challenge to her reelection bid, would be seen as a referendum on the war, and this campaign would take place in a state that is staunchly opposed to the war. A Cindy/Hillary primary would also posit the peace movement and the party grassroots against the DLC and its corporate money stream on the most favorable terms to the former likely to arise for a generation.

Think of it - beating Hillary in a primary over the war would end her presidential aspirations - at least as a hawk - and would change the political dynamics in the Congress and the nation as a whole.

For those concerned that Cindy might face charges of "carpetbagger" if she came to New York, a run against Hillary would be a per se inocculation against such a charge, given that Hillary herself never lived in New York until after her Senate run in 2000.

Cindy - PLEASE - come to New York and end the war on Primary Day this September.

I'm angry, very angry, and sad that no one stopped this obvious violation of Cindy's First Amendment rights. I saw plenty of pins and other paraphenalia at the SOTU, that were obvious statements of support for the president. Is our country truly this lost, have the people in power literally thrown the constitution away?

If this reaches her I wish her the best. I sent her my support several times and if she goes to ( or any other goes there for that matter) in my blog you will see severl dedicated to her. Mrs. Sheehan is the real USA, the best of the best in this country and let God Bless Her!

If Cindy Sheehan is the "best" this country has to offer - using her son's death to capitalize on fame in the name of virtue - then maybe I don't want to be here. She should be ashamed of herself. Also, I suggest that she ask herself the critical her son proud of her actions? By the way's your book doing?? I think we should all contact congress and the media and make as big a stink as possible. Let your neighbors know too. Let everyone know. Whether people think wearing that shirt was appropriate or not, I believe the vast majority of Americans will also be angry.

Cindy could win against Feinstein who is a war hawk whose husband Blum owns 25% of the Carlyle Group stock, (war contracts)is a great idea. A win here would not stop her from running against Hillary in the general election.

She might be able to mount a much more effective and impressive campaign if she relocated, joined us here in Beautiful Baghdad By The Bay, and ran against that bought and paid for Pelosi. Sure would feel good to have someone representing us on this side of the Bay with the same courage and ethics as Lynn Woolsey. She wouldn't have to expend energy and resources running statewide in all those rural red reactionary wastelands.

To me it's amazing that Cindy can still get around as much as she does. I know several people that have made the no-fly list, and it seems like she would be at the top of that stupid list. I guess her profile is too high.

Does anyone besides me think that the reason they also kicked out Republican Rep. Young's wife Beverly, with her "Support Our Troops" T-shirt, was just more psycho-warfare to try to convince the public that the administration denies civil liberties on an equal opportunity basis? Of course, Beverly was not hauled off to jail for 4 hours like Cindy. Cindy's rejection seems to have occurred before Beverly's, so I'm thinking maybe they came up with a quick plan to make kicking Cindy out look "legal". Or maybe the whole thing was pre-planned because they knew Cindy was coming. Nothing would surprise me anymore.

Ah, the layers of deception and just plain bull that we will have to overcome before this is all over, if it ever really is. Truth is something certain people seem to think they can adjust at will. Maybe they're even right -- I just wish people with good intentions were doing the adjusting. The current adjusters need to be in jail!

For most of us, this was more or less the 'last straw' regarding the blatant disregard for our Rights. We now have a dictator who, at the moment of any truth (unfortunately Cindy's numbers are not very real, they're TOO LOW, they don't count the soldiers who died in Germany after sustaining wounds in Iraq)can squelch criticism by having it arrested.

Cindy's arrest should be the wake up call to America that it has a DICTATOR IN POWER and that it no longer is a DEMOCRACY.

We quit being a DEMOCRACY the moment that Scalia wrote the opinion that stopped the counting of ballots in Florida. We ceased being a democracy the very second that the vote tallies in the 2004 election were so grossly 'out of wack' with the exit polling, and the much too late government investigation by the G.A.O. showed the election was RIGGED FOR THIS DICTATORSHIP TO CONTINUE.

i am so sick and tired of hearing about poor cindy sheehan how she lost her son in an unjust all about lies war. her son is the one who signed up for the military and thought this country was worth fighting for. all his mother has done is disgrace his honor and the cause he was fighting for. i know some kids (i say kids b/c they are younger than me and went to school with my youner brother) who joined the military because they wanted to fight the terrorist that would kill all of us in a heart beat and are now over in iraq fighting. i know if something should happen to them their families would be sad but know in their hearts their son died fighting for this country and a cause they believe is just and worthy.
as for last night at the capitol noone can tell me that cindy did not go there wanting to cause trouble. i am sure she had it all planned from the time she got the ticket. the protest they were doing outside was not getting any air time and noone seemed to care so she needed a way to be in the limelight. she even said the news people knew she was there and she had the shirt one hoping they would show her a few times. that seems a little calculated to me. well she is back in the media where she wants to be. mission accomplished!

I wanted to comment on Cindy Sheehan in general. Her son died for a just cause. Let the memory of his death be positive. Her antics will not bring back her son nor will it stop a very necessary war. Her actions have gone from being an american with the right to protest and a right to free speech to a bitter unpatriotic person. Do your son and his memory a favor. Leave it alone! As a soldier who served in Iraq I would never want my memory tarnished by any of my love ones the way Ms. Sheehan has tarnished her sons.

It's hard to know where to begin. But I believe that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell, Wolfowitz can be brought up on numerous charges, both on the basis of domestic and international law.

Crimes against humanity and crimes against peace were some of the charges brought against Goebbels et al. Starting a war must be based on a credible threat of immediate danger--that did not exist. Indeed, they could have sent in 10,000 inspectors to discover Saddam was no threat. Thousands and thousands of people have been maimed and slaughtered for the lies and deceptions of the Bush administration.

These lies are so pervasive, massive and persistent, their scope is breathtaking. They touch on everything from the destruction of the planet via walking away from Kyoto, to the deaths of millions of people from AIDS, caused in significant measure by their embrace of the notion that intellectual property rights trump human life (a despicable distortion of IP to put it mildly).

The disingenuousness of Bush whining about the American dependence on oil while doing nothing substantial about it is no less vile than their absolute disaster of an approach to healthcare in the United States, as witnessed by Frist and company's byzantine and murderous Medicare prescription drug plan. "Part D" must stand for Death and Despair.

And then we come to the absolute, unparalleled trammeling of civil and human rights. Illegal detentions, full support of torture, Guantanmo, tapping phones, bypassing FISA, lying more and more.

These are criminals. Low life, miserable dismal thugs of the very worst sort. But the media pander to them, suck up, pass the lies along as tho Bush were the emissary of god. (God. Ugh. Where we should be living in a land that provides freedom FROM religion as much as freedom of religion. No more under the Christian talibanis.)

I grieve with Cindy for the loss of what is best about the United States. Very often, the US has failed to live up to its noble roots and founding principles--slavery, the genocide of indigenous peoples are perhaps the greatest blots on our history. But never has it descendend to such depraved and vicious depths as it has under the direction of the Executive, with the lockstep support of Congress and now the Supreme Court.

Perhaps it is time for another Declaration of Independence?

For some reason I am unable, but not unwilling, to post support for Cindy. Cindy is a paragon of virtue compared to the criminal that has taken control of our dear country in these terrible times.

Let us work to send Bush back to Texas. I know many in Texas do not want him. Maybe he could go set up a library at Yale for the fascist federalist society. It could all be secret. They can play there little tricks and games all by themselves while Cindy and Ann Wright and other brave Americans try to clean up the terrible mess they have made of our country.

I am so disappointed to see that this is allowed to happen in this country. Thank you Cindy for standing in your truth. We must take our country back from the king Bush who is being allowed to distort and pervert the founding principals of the USA. Thank you Cindy for braving the lion's den....we should have all had seats in the gallery with shirts displaying the results of Bush's misdeeds. Standing silently as he gave his ludicrous state of the union speech, so that he would have to, at last, face the truth!

How can we all stand by and allow our freedom's to be desecrated, one after the other. We need to band together and call for a new Continental Congress so that we can refine the government within the Constitution and oust those who have failed so miserably to represent us!!! Let me quote from the Declaration of Independence:

It is our RIGHT and our DUTY to throw off such a government as has replaced the one to which we are entitled. To rise up and give this false leadership a redress of our grievances and to shake them off if they refuse to listen! Words are pointless at this point because of the control of the media and even what individuals are allowed to say.

Protesters are treated so evilly because Mr. Bush as well as his cohorts remember the protesters of the 60's and they do not want anything like that to tarnish their administration. Why they might even be able to end their blood for oil efforts..."god" forbid! So they nip it in the bud by screening everyone and not allowing any disagreement with their stated bring Freedom and Democracy to Iraq! (of course they are stealing it from us in order to do so but then who's counting)

Anyway, thank you Cindy for YOUR leadership. It makes it easier for each of us to stand up and do the right thing, no matter how hard it may be! Let's stand united to bring back what this administration has and will continue to steal from us--and let's do it now!

Now is the time for real patriots to give up political sport and personality cults. It is time to take responsibility for your government by staying informed and becoming involved and engaged in the democratic process that so many have died for. Cindy Sheehan is the symbol of motherhood against the war in Iraq, as far as I'm concerned. Everyone, even greedy people without consciences, have had a mother. She is the heart and home of everyone on earth.
