Scotland Today: Scottish First Minister Refuses to Meet with Sheehan

First Minister criticised for refusing to meet US peace campaigner

The mother of the dead Scottish Soldier Gordon Gentle has branded First Minister Jack McConnell a disgrace to Scotland. Mr McConnell refused to meet the American peace campaigner, Cindy Sheehan, when she flew into Scotland today for a series of anti-war engagements.

Cindy Sheehan has hounded President Bush and mobilised American public opinion against the war in Iraq. Today she was in Edinburgh to meet the Stop the War Coalition and a chance to meet with those, who, like her, have lost their sons in the conflict.

Cindy Sheehan has hounded president Bush and mobilised American public opinion against the war in Iraq. Today she was in Edinburgh to meet the Stop the War Coalition and a chance to meet with those, who, like her, have lost their sons in the conflict.

She said: "We're having a great success in America. Before Camp Casey,it was just a slight majority who opposed the war; now it's up to 63% oppose the war."

At First Minister's Questions, the Scottish Socialists demanded Jack McConnell meet with Miss Sheehan.

The First Minister said: "My office replied to that invitation earlier today explaining that I'm unable to attend the meeting. However I'm sure that all members of this parliament would join me in extending our sympathy to all those who have lost family members serving in either the British or American armed forces.

Colin Fox MSP, leader of the Scottish Socialist Party, said: "Cindy Sheehan lost a son in a war that the First Minister supported, and yet he can't even look her in the eye. Rose Gentle gets the same brush-off.

Rose Gentle said: "We expected it from Tony Blair, but not from Jack McConnell, we thought he'd have the decency to meet the families, we're actually disgusted with him."

The pain of war is still real for these mothers but in the end their campaigning has not moved George Bush and Tony Blair.

I am an American and I find Cindy sheenan DISGRACEFUL. I applaud for refusing to meet with an obviously distraught and mentally, emotionally disturbed person. I feel for her loss but not her distasteful use of the media to take advantage of her own plight. Her own family has disowned her in regards to her disrespectful behaviour to her own son's memory. Sad, very sad. She gave away her own family and broke up her own marriage for this.

anonymous should get the spelling of her name correct then maybe what he/she has to say may be taken seriously. As for her marriage, she admits it was rocky before Casey's death and she has not been disowned by her family.

I have watched Cindy ever since she emerged in the anti war movement and I have enormous admiration for what she has achieved. Seems to me the only people who object to her and are incredibly rude about her are those Repugs who support the war but don't have the cojones(sp) to enlist.
Keep up the good work Cindy.

I too am an American and I have to tell you that the only thing that I find distasteful, disgusting, and stupid are those who applaud the adminisrtation who,s leader was a coward when asked to serve his country,as he ran and hid behind daddy's coat tail and money and then didn't even fulfil his commitment to the Air National Guard and then lied bout it just like he did evey time he has opened his mouth in public.

"First they ignore you,
then they laugh at you,
then they fight you,
then you win."

-- Mahatma Gandhi

Dear Cindy,
I believe you have their attention now so YOU GO GIRL!!

Jack McConnell is a disgrace to Scotland.

This is a man who is on never ending jollies to the US at the tax payers expense so I suppose it comes as no surprise to hear that he has sold out the people who elected him for neocon kickbacks.

The Labour party in Scotland is a loathsome and insidious organisation that will always appease their overlords in Downing Street rather than doing the right thing.

I can only hope that one day the people of Scotland will finally wake up and see that the Scottish Labour Party is a treasonous organisation that keeps the real decision making power over Scots firmly in London.

Actions like this by the corrupt scum bag McConnell reveal who is really pulling his strings - Tony Blair and his neocon handlers.

One small consolation for Cindy - it would have been a waste of time meeting this greasy little toady anyway.

it sounds Scumbag McConell and our own slime bag bush have one thing in common and that is they have both sold out the people who voted for him and all in the name of MONEY aka.special interest.
