December 5th is the 50th anniversary of the start of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, in support of which a 26-year-old Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his first civil rights speech at the Holt Street Baptist Church in Montgomery. Rev. Lennox Yearwood has suggested we use the title of Dr. King's last published book as a way to focus on the challenges facing our progressive movement today. "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?" is as relevant a question today as ever.
As in 1967, today economic justice and adventuristic wars of occupation remain incompatible. Hurricane Katrina opened our eyes to the contemporary ravages of racism and poverty. The progressive movement itself is not immune to the forces of racism that fragment and weaken us. We look forward to Rev. Yearwood sharing his insights and, through his commitment to the emergence of a new Rainbow, guiding us in conversation to better understand where we go from here.
Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr. is President and CEO of the Hip Hop Caucus, a national coalition of pop-culture social/political organizations, community-based organizations, youth leadership organizations, and individuals who believe in the collective power of persons 14-39 years old. It is the first and only hip-hop membership organization in existence to establish a comprehensive agenda for the hip-hop Community. During the 2004 Presidential election, Rev. Yearwood--along with Russell Simmons and Jonathan Lewis--created the first ever Hip-Hop Team Vote Bus Tour, to support young people in challenging the established political order. Rev. Yearwood serves on the Progressive Democrats of America Advisory Board. Further biographical information can be found by clicking here.
