War Is Over (If They Mean It)
By David Swanson
Sixty-five congress members, including 60 Democrats and 5 Republicans, voted to end the occupation of Afghanistan on Wednesday. But 356 congress members, including 189 Democrats and 167 Republicans voted to keep the war going. The vote followed three hours of debate created by Congressman Dennis Kucinich's introduction of a privileged resolution.
The debate featured three leaders from three groups of congress members: the war opponents (almost all Democrats), the pro-war Democrats, and the pro-war Republicans. Given this alignment, which has existed for nearly a decade now, is there any reason for supporters of peace and justice to take heart? I think so. Here's why: If the 60 Democrats acted in good faith and would have voted the same way even if the bill had a chance of passing, or even if that could be said of only 38 of them, then we may very well see funding of the wars dry up. If the leadership includes unrelated measures in the next war funding bill ($33 billion coming in April or May), measures that lead all the Republicans to vote No (as happened last July), then only 38 Democrats have to vote No to block the bill.
Now, there are two weak points in this plan. One is that the war funding could be brought up on its own without anything displeasing to the Republicans attached to it. But that would be the smart thing to do, so don't count on it. The moving of Guantanamo to Illinois has already been proposed for inclusion in the bill. The other weak point is that, of course, very few of the Democrats who voted Yes on Wednesday did so in good faith. Look back to July when 51 Democrats voted no on the funding when it was guaranteed to pass, and only 32 were willing to vote No when they had a chance of actually blocking the bill. Look at Congressman David Obey who voted to end the war on Wednesday and will write and shepherd the bill to fund it next month.
Yet we are in a greatly strengthened position from which to pressure 65 congress members to vote No on the next funding. They just went on record officially acting to end the war. And many of them went on video on the floor of the House speaking passionately in favor of ending the war. Constituents can now play back the videos, praise the anti-war commitments, and demand that none of these officials put our money where their mouth isn't. This whipping operation is being tracked at http://defundwar.org
These are the Republicans who voted to end the war in Afghanistan: Campbell, Duncan, Johnson (IL), Jones, Paul. These are the Democrats: Baldwin, Capuano, Chu, Clarke, Clay, Cleaver, Crowley, Davis (IL), DeFazio, Doyle, Edwards (MD), Ellison, Farr, Filner, Frank (MA), Grayson, Grijalva, Gutierrez, Hastings (FL), Jackson (IL), Jackson Lee (TX), Johnson E. B., Kagen, Kucinich, Larson (CT), Lee (CA), Lewis (GA), Maffei, Maloney, Markey (MA), McDermott, McGovern, Michaud, Miller George, Nadler (NY), Napolitano, Neal (MA), Obey, Olver, Payne, Pingree (ME), Polis (CO), Quigley, Rangel, Richardson, Sánchez Linda T., Sanchez Loretta, Schakowsky, Serrano, Speier, Stark, Stupak, Tierney, Towns, Tsongas, Velázquez, Waters, Watson, Welch, Woolsey.
A special focus on Obey would be appropriate. If he claims he wants to continue the Iraq War, he can fund that one separately. He cannot, however, claim that his vote on Wednesday was sincere while he continues to fund the war in Afghanistan. An additional special focus on Grijalva and Woolsey makes sense as well. If they want to end the war and understand it as a matter of life and death on a large scale, they must use the progressive caucus they chair to whip their colleagues to stand with them against the funding.
Whether we are able to block the funding this year or not, the central issue facing our government has been raised, and a debate has been aired. We've identified 356 congress members who need to be sent packing. And we've identified another 65 who need to demonstrate their lack of hypocrisy. I liveblogged the debate at http://afterdowningstreet.org/afghanliveblog and there were many highlights, including a lot of love for President Obama from a lot of Republicans, and a lot of debunking of pro-war nonsense from progressives -- including some really passionate cries for peace that sounded almost, you know, like they meant it.

Stay warm this winter in a black hooded sweatshirt. Order one. Order them by the dozen and donate them to occupations!

I am surprised and pleased that all but Lynch and Delahunt voted yea in MA. Thanks David for your blogging and reporting. Hard to get elsewhere.
Let the recored show, that both corporate and imperial parties learned nothing from the criminal war in Vietnam, the billions of dollars wasted, the millions of lives lost, and repeated the same crime AGAIN in Iraq, NOW Afghanistan, a political class of 356 War criminals, imperial thugs, all of whom should be prosecuted for wars of aggression, torture, rendition, and failure to uphold the Consititution......SAY SIEG HEIL TO THESE WAR CRIMINALS, IMPERIAL FASCISTS.
As I was reading this, I silently hoped to see the name of my Congerssman, Jim Cooper, but I wasn't suprised when it didn't appear.
My opinion of this elected official stands firm. What ever Nancy Pelosi tells him to do, he does it. My friends and I nicknamed him "Nancy's Boy", or Nancy's YES MAN".
He's come out publically in support of bringing our troops home, yet, he never votes to do it when it's needed.
He has a form letter that he sends out, when I question him about his voting record. Most of the time, if at all.
And what was the TOP Story in the Zio-Press this morning???

"Al-Qaida shifts tactics, marks success by ‘fear’
‘While al-Qaida would still love to have home runs, they will take singles’ -
For the first time, the group that carried out the Sept. 11 attacks and has prided itself on its ideological purism seems to be eyeing a more pragmatic and arguably more dangerous shift in tactics. The emerging message appears to be: Big successes are great, but sometimes simply trying can be just as good. . .
. . . In a recent Internet posting, U.S.-born al-Qaida spokesman Adam Gadahn made a public pitch for such smaller, single acts of jihad.
'Even apparently unsuccessful attacks on Western mass transportation systems can bring major cities to a halt, cost the enemy billions and send his corporations into bankruptcy," Gadahn said in a video released and translated by U.S.-based Site Intelligence Group, which monitors Islamic militant message traffic."

That said, I think brother David Swanson is "spot on" when he writes:

OK Folks.
One of these "brave" Congress critters is my own Keith Ellison. Who has proven himself the master of the horse and pony show. So this little side show is IMHO an attempt to detract from the central issue. That the entire corporate corrupted, pro-war two party system itself is the problem.
So lets not fall for the horse and pony show again.. You all know damned well that they decided, before the vote who could vote for this, who needed political cover and still put up the image, the facade of opposition.
Let me tell you folks, I learned a boatload from my experience of working with Impeach For Peace.
I also agree with the poster above about 9-11 Truth and Building Seven..
Oh and also, for the record I have been banned from posting on Op Ed News (tough, liberal, progressive) as well as Common Dreams.. For daring to point out these kinds of truths. I can only hope that this thinking of banning dissent who speaks uncomfortable truths will not be banned here.
Time will tell..

WTC7 is not "the key to 9/11 truth", but it is part of the key, which is composite. The following article is over three years old, but what it says is as good today as it was when posted in August, 2006.
"Stop Belittling the Theories About September 11"
by Bill Christison, August 14, 2006
http://dissidentvoice.org/Aug06/Christison14.htm
I'll first quote his bio. at the end of the article:
"Bill Christison is a former senior official of the CIA. He was a National Intelligence Officer and the Director of the CIA's Office of Regional and Political Analysis before his retirement in 1979. Since then he has written numerous articles on U.S. foreign policies."
He was in the CIA for 29 years, I believe.
I'll excerpt a little of the article.
Re. point SEVEN, see the Pilots for 9/11 Truth website, www.pilotsfor911truth.org, and look for videos with retired Lt Col Robert M. Bowman, who flew over 100 military missions and is very experienced in or with flying U.S. military jets. Lt Col Bowman speaks in terms specifically related to point SEVEN, and says that [no] airliner hit the Pentagon and that none could have.
Ray McGovern, who everyone knows, doesn't say that no airliner didn't hit the Pentagon, only saying "whatever hit", clearly meaning that he's not saying that it was an airliner; and he, among many former U.S. government officials, as well as current members of Congress (several of them, both Repub. and Dem.), supports the call for a new and independent 9/11 investigation.
Anyway, many pilots have not allegedly said that the airline did not hit the Pentagon, or couldn't have; they simply have said this. That is, it's not a question of "allegedly", not any longer anyway.
There are websites similar to Pilots for 9/11 Truth, for firefighters, and for former U.S. government officials, military, CIA, and political office holders.
And many of the people who were Commissioners on the 9/11 Commission have clearly denounced the final report, while one or more of these people also denounce Bush Jr, Cheney, and the CIA and/or U.S. military for obstructions, which obviously are criminal obstructions. Furthermore, the military was, early on too, shown to have really lied to the 9/11 Commission.
"Loose Change" is a good documentary for a summary, but while I haven't seen it yet and plan to do so soon, I've been recently seeing that AE911Truth.org's documentary, "9/11: Blueprint for Truth", is said to be very, very good; and this organisation, Architects & Engineers for 9/11 Truth, has been entirely or nearly entirely focusing on WTC Towers 1, 2 and 7. Based on what I've seen of AE911Truth's videos, so far, this full documentary must be great, excellent, and thorough.
So, and again, WTC7 is not "the key"; it's an important part, but not alone. Points ONE and TWO in Bill Christison's article, I wholly agree with, and they are the composite I have in mind.
Lastly, I hope the excerpt that I'm posting is not too long, that is, that it does not exceed an acceptable or allowable length for an excerpt.

The article by David Swanson is very appreciable. I definitely support what it says.
