Rumsfeld Says More Troops Could Be Iraq-Bound

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- As many Americans wonder when troops will start to come home, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has indicated the number of U.S. forces in Iraq could rise temporarily.

Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon, Rumsfeld and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Peter Pace said they expect insurgents to expand their attacks as the elections approach. Iraqis are scheduled to go to the polls in mid-December for parliamentary elections.

American troop levels rose to a peak of 161,000 before the Oct. 15 election on the new constitution.

Currently there are about 158,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.
