Rep. Waxman Renews Request for Hearings on Leak Case

House Government Reform Committee

Friday, October 28, 2005 -- Rep. Waxman asks for congressional hearings to examine (1) who should be held accountable for the leak of the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson, (2) why the White House failed to meet its obligations to revoke the security clearances of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and Karl Rove, and (3) how the leak relates to the broader issue of whether the President and his top advisors used misleading intelligence to launch an unnecessary war in Iraq.

Consider the dynamic among Patrick Fitzgerald, Scouter Libby, and the White House. Fitz wants a triangle, the White House a dual.

Fitz wants to use the 30 years Libby faces to separate him from Cheney, Rove, and Bush and get him to turn state's evidence.

Cheney, Rove, and Bush are counting on Libby's falling on his sword.

But Libby must also negotiate on the domestic front: can he convince his wife and kids that he should be disgraced and spend 30 years in jail to protect this White House? And internally, will he take that deal? This is where Fitz trumps Bush.

But Bush can pardon Libby, not today, but on his way out of office. So right now, if not already, a deal is being struck: Libby keeps his mouth shut, the lawyers drag out the investigation, Libby is not convicted until shortly before Bush leaves office, he takes the prosecutor's best shot, and Bush pardons him.

Libby keeps his mouth shut, the investigation stops with him, and the whole affair is forgotten.

Problem is: This deal cannot be made without Bush's guarantee. That constitutes a presidential conspiracy to obstruct justice in a treason crime. That is a high crime for which any president should be impreached.

Both progressives and conservatives who are concerned about the preservation of the core of our democracy must speak out right now and make it clear that this is one pardon that will not be tolerated, even from a lame duck president, because it will be rooted in a deal designed to obstruct justice in a treason case.

All it would take is a "wink and a nod" from Bush, Rove,or Cheney
to let Libby know he will be pardoned. Due to his already "craftiness" I could see Bush et all doing just this. Could you?

Good for Rep Waxman he is always on top of corruption and wrongdoing in this deceitful Administration!

Good for sentor Waxman Thanks to him and sentor Congers they try to be on top of things but we need all the Senators pulling together. Please keep trying.

If everyone reading this comment will take the time to call or write or email a Democratic member of congress and tell them that you will no longer give money to a Democrat unless you hear AS A GROUP, A DEMAND FOR THE WAR TO END, A DEMAND FOR THE TRUTH ABOUT THE LIES LEADING UP TO THE WAR, A UNIFIED LOUD DENOUNCEMENT OF THIS ADMINISTRATION'S WRONG DOINGS.
We have to demand that our party follows the strength and convictions of Conyers, Waxman, Boxer, Waters, Lee, Kucinich, Kennedy etc (there a few more). No more middle of the road tactics. This is a drastic time and drastic measures are needed. Please write to those who are not saying what you want them to say.
Thank you
