Dear Fast for the Future:
I appreciate you're making efforts but feel that those may be counterproductive by lending support to politically expedient (for Obama and the Democratic Congress) but wholly inadequate legislation on climate change. (There are parallels here with the NGOs which defended sanctioning President Bush instead of impeaching him or introducing legislation which would set a benchmark for withdrawal of troops instead of not introducing any funding legislation . . . period, b/c the former was the best we could get "according to our friends on the Hill".
So i'd like to ask a few questions to learn more.
Haven't the goals/targets/schedules of the IPCC 2007 been eclipsed since then by new science pointing to more dire circumstances of our global climactic systems? Doesn't the bill being considered by Congress not even support those (eclipsed) targets/schedules?
Also, tactically (and for the planet) why do you adopt " a target that, if reached, would give the world some chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change"? Seems criminally reckless given the stakes to start bargaining with what you would settle for!? But the inadequate goals you support do give more credibility to the bill which is completely inadequate to save the planet!
So why not support three simple policies that would address climate change responsibly:
i. 100% electricity from renewables within 10 years (as advocated for by al gore) (i.e. not just no new coal powerplants but shut down all (including incredibly polluting methane "natural" gas) fossil fuel plants within a set time - 10 yrs);
ii. carbon tax (revenue neutral) (as supported by Carbon Tax Center, Jim Hansen, and Mayor Bloomberg: http://carbontaxcenter.org/);
iii. ending industrial logging of old-growth forests (as supported by Dr. Glenn Barry and Sir Nicholas Stern)
Then we would have real goals to rally around that responsibly address the catastrophe we face. The ones you've chosen are congruent with the new Climate Change and Energy legislation which includes cap-and-trade and foresees coal plants existing in 2025!
Big mistake to underwrite that terrible bill.
Look fwd to your thoughts.
