Senator Leahy Starts Bush Truth Commission Petition - Will You Sign On?

I have proposed the idea of a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate abuses during the Bush-Cheney Administration -- so they never happen again. These abuses may include the use of torture, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, and executive override of laws.

Please sign this online petition, urging Congress to consider establishing a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate the Bush-Cheney Administration's abuses.

Is Leahy leaving the door open FOR prosecution after "The Truth" is found? (I never thought it was missing.) OR, as he mentioned, will he be giving enough immunity that there won't be anyone left to bear the responsibility?

I think it is great that he is pursuing "The Truth" BUT I, for one, don't want it to stop there. Without punishment, the rule of law goes South--at least inside the government. This is like finding out a bank robber DID IT and then saying, "Well, at least now we know "The Truth"! When will D.C. grow up and act like adults?! (Rhetorical question)

REAL "CHANGE"? http://www.dsausa.org/about/index.html

Jonathan Turley (got my own problems with him) said on Olbermann that this was ridiculous for much the same reasons you are talking about. No "truth commission" has ever resulting in real prosecutions in this country or even in South Africa. Take the Church Commission, Warren Commission, 9/11 Commission... even the "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" in South Africa.

He also makes an interesting point when he says that even the establishment of such a commission undermines the rule of law. Laws were broken and crimes committed by the Bush/Cheney administration. Clearly. So the formation of such a "commission" to delve into their illegality presupposes that there is some question as to whether or not we deem them crimes at all.

He suggests a prosecutor and a criminal investigation. I agree.

I am disappointed in Leahy, but am not surprised. Any kind of commission will be flawed at the beginning because members of congress are complicit in these crimes. It would be like asking OJ to investigate OJ.

Not only were laws broken and crimes committed, but they were copped to on freakin' national tv. Bush and Cheney are guilty of war crimes, period and I agree with Turley that if we, as a nation, don't prosecute them, we should/will be held responsible.

Senator Leahy clearly stated on Rachel Maddow, that he would give IMMUNITY to those that testified. This means that alot of those actually involved would get off scott free. We do not need a "truth commission", Bush and Cheney have admitted on national television that they did order torture and wire tapping. We know the truth, we need a special prosecutor! Someone needs to counter with a petition for special prosecutor! Truth commission waste of time and money and will stand in the way of actual investigation/prosecution!

After WWII, the Germans were shocked to learn what Hitler had done in their names.

In the very near future Americans will be shocked to learn what Bush&Co have done in their names.

The civilized world has suffered a wild 8 year international crime spree against humanity at our expense, all for the obscene profits of greedy evil "men".

There will be no "moving forward" until Cheney/Bush are given a fair trial. Nothing else will do.

This is truly pathetic.

We have just suffered through eight years of the most secretive, corrupt, destructive presidential administration to ever sit in our White House. They have publicly admitted to crimes against American citizens and our Constitution. Well over a million innocent deaths are the direct result of their lies. And Patrick Leahy wants to promote some half-assed "truth" commission instead of DEMANDING prosecution?

Their mountain of crimes has already been extensively documented (except in a court of law, of course, where it counts the most). Bush, Cheney and their entire cabal of co-conspirators should already be well into their well deserved prison sentences. But because we have a Congress full of cowards who are more concerned with political expediency than justice, these heinous bastards continue to walk free.

Senator Leahy, if all you're going to do is promote such ridiculous ideas that will ultimately do nothing to restore the integrity of our Constitution and the rule of law we're supposed to live by, you might as well just be silent and hang your head in shame for the rest of your life.

Dear Friend,

We have just emerged from a time when White House officials
buttfucked the universe using cooking utensils, mazola, and
roofing nails.

That is why Senator Patrick Leahy has performed fellatio on
republican's and begged them for mercy!

Rather than justice, we need a 'cheap charade' to create the
illusion something will actually happen to these fuckers. The
best way to move forward is just pretending the constituents do
not exist, just keep yammering like you know what you're doing,
and keep taking A.I.P.A.C. money.

Please join me by signing Senator Leahy's (another hand wringing
fuck) online petition at http://www.BushTruthCommission.com --
urging Congress to consider establishing a truth and
reconciliation commission to investigate the Bush-Cheney
Administration's abuses.

and shut up.

The more traction this subject gets, the more people become aware. The more aware they are, the more enraged they will become. It's that simple. Not everyone has been keeping score like us Civil Libertarians. We have to allow the rest of America to catch up. I'm sure that once the truth starts coming out, people will want them thrown to salt water crocodiles. Or yanked apart by draft horses. All I want is the truth and the precious legacy of their names destroyed. For the good of our Nation. Yes, I want convictions, but we need everybody on board for that. (Everybody that's coming that is)

The Truth Commission proposed by Senator Leahy presents all of us with perhaps the only bright light that can lead this country out of the many dark crevices we have fallen into in our national and individual pursuit, not of happiness, but of wealth and power. The Commission's potential for cleaning our house and putting all of us back on the road toward honor and dignity in ourselves and our national purpose, reaches far beyond exposing the wrong-doings of the Bush Administration or any economic stimulus package that the Obama Administration may propose.

The beauty of it is that it will cost very little money and, if handled carefully and with tact, it may well snowball into accomplishing much, much, more than the goal it is currently proposing.

As a former state prosecutor the Senator is well aware of how the legal system works against itself - with the accused seeking every legal loophole to avoid prosecution. In this sense half the Law works to find the truth and the other half works to obscure it. He has said that such an approach against the trespasses of the Bush Administration would cost millions and take up to fifteen years to determine and end up punishing only those minions at the bottom of the pile.

By granting full immunity to all who come forward to confess their part in any and every machination to circumvent laws, we do not have a nation ratting on itself, but the opportunity for a once honorable people to finally vomit up all and everything vile contaminant that has blinded, demeaned and weakened us, not only in the eyes of an anxious world, but in the depths of our own hearts.

It is my hope that the value of such a forgiving Christian approach spreads far and wide into every dark corner of every institution in the nation - not with the object of punishing any single person or group, but of restoring ourselves and our nation to good health.
