... but one really needs to look back further than the hatching of the Cold War in the 1950s to fully grasp the roots of U.S. propensities for militarism and "manifest destiny" interference in the affairs of other nations. It goes back at least to 1846 and some might argue before that, if the abortive invasion of Canada in 1812 can be considered in that context.
