US heads of industry strategise to keep unions down

Wikileaks has released a secret hour long telephone recording between US heads of industry discussing efforts to prevent the emancipation of unions under an Obama administration. Yesterday the Huffington Post ran a story by Sam Stein titled "Bailout Recipients Hosted Call To Defeat Key Labor Bill". The story inclded around five minutes of an hour long recording between federal bailout funds recipiets. Wikileaks has released the full hour long recording. The call shows the firms to be involved in lobbying, effectively with public money.

The summary below is excerpted from Mr. Stein's story:

Three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to organize opposition to the U.S. labor community's top legislative priority.

Participants on the October 17 call -- including at least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG -- were urged to persuade their clients to send "large contributions" to groups working against the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill.

Bernie Marcus, the charismatic co-founder of Home Depot, led the call along with Rick Berman, an aggressive EFCA opponent and founder of the Center for Union Facts. Over the course of an hour, the two framed the legislation as an existential threat to American capitalism, or worse.

"This is the demise of a civilization," said Marcus. "This is how a civilization disappears. I am sitting here as an elder statesman and I'm watching this happen and I don't believe it."

Donations of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars were needed, it was argued, to prevent America from turning "into France."

Unions not only ensure a living wage for people, it's also an empowering statement of self worth, in and of itself! Think about it. You spend more of your waking hours with co-workers than you do with family. People talk at work, and politics, religion, ecology and many other things are discussed in the course of the day. The very fact that you're unionized compels you to become more active in changing OTHER things!. Union people realize that they are participating in their standard of living (by paying union dues, attending strikes for themselves and brother unions, and attending meetings where EVERYBODY has a say (which is the very definition of Democracy)). This sense of participation and inclusion rubs off and affects other components of their life. In other words, union people are more apt to feel they can make a change and GET INVOLVED! They figure "hey, we just got a cost of living increase to our wage, why not elect a Senator that listens to us?" and so forth... This is a NIGHTMARE for Big Business! The GOP and BB have a lot in common and are joined at the hip in their beliefs in a strict, highly structured hierarchy (caste system) that rewards deceit and ruthlessness (which for the GOP is the ultimate irony of representing the Christian Right, yet practices Darwinistic [dog eat dog] economics). The GOP/BB would pay their lowest caste workers (I'll leave it up to your imagination on how you'd make this shit list) as little as possible and if they can't afford to arrive in the morning, "hey, the cocksucker was a scumbag anyway! Look at those shabby clothes fer chrissakes! Fire his ass" (ignoring the fact that this person couldn't buy clothes, eat properly or afford gas to arrive to the job on the low wage they were paid). With all their Christian "values", GOP/BB will thin the herd as ruthlessly as a croc killing the wildebeest. These status symbol obsessed jerks only feel better of themselves at the expense of all others and the more disparity, the higher on the throne they feel. And the disparity of the haves and the have nots has never been bigger in decades, thanks to the Bush years and tax cuts for the obscenely rich. The biggest and most successful ruse they've managed to pull off is convincing low paid Republican voters that, one day too, they can become a Rockefeller! My ass.
The reason Unions scare the GOP/BB (and the Press, nowadays) is the promotion of independent THOUGHT, that most terrible enemy of a dictator state. (Got Democracy?)
