Peace Activists Take Shoes to White House in Solidarity with Shoe-Throwing Iraqi Journalist

Call for his release and tribute to Iraqis who have suffered under US occupation

WHAT: Peace activists to gather with shoes in solidarity to Iraqi journalist
WHEN: 11 a.m., Weds. Dec. 17
WHERE: In front of White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In solidarity with an Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George W. Bush at a Baghdad press conference Sunday, peace activists will gather outside the White House with bags of shoes representing Iraqis and U.S. soldiers who have died since the Bush Administration's illegal invasion of Iraq.

They aim to show support for Iraqi journalist Muntader al-Zaidi, who hurled his shoes at President Bush while he spoke at the conference on his "surprise" visit to discuss the war. Al-Zaidi is currently being held by Iraqi police and questioned on his actions. The peace activists are calling on the Iraqi government to release al-Zaidi without charges and have set up a fund to support him and his family."

"It's outrageous that al-Zaidi could get two years in prison for insulting George Bush, when Bush is directly responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis and 4,200 U.S. troops, and 5 million displaced Iraqis," says Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK. "The one who should be in jail is George Bush, and he should be charged with war crimes."

The gesture of throwing shoes is considered a major insult in Arabic culture.

"al-Zaidi's act of civil disobedience expresses the disgust that so many Iraqis and Americans feel towards a man who has caused so much pain and suffering," says Anas Shallal of Iraqi Voices for Peace. "It is indeed a fitting tribute to the end of the Bush reign of terror."

U.S. veterans who served in Iraq will also participate in the shoe action at the White House.

"Having one shoe thrown at George Bush pales in comparison to the suffering that veterans and Iraqis go through everyday," says Geoffrey Milliard of Iraq Veterans Against the War. "Perhaps if Bush can see some more of these shoes before he leaves office, he will feel some of our pain."

I get the symbolism of the gesture, but this probably isn't the best idea. Since it's insulting just to show someone the bottom of your shoe, I imagine the Iraqis would consider it incredibly offensive to put the names of the dead on them. It could be considered to be symbolic of grinding their names in the dirt. Just a thought.

You know I was thinking this was a great idea, but you make a fantastic point. I wonder if this idea was run by any Iraqi to get their input.

If only the protestors could do the same thing at congress! Let congress know how we feel about them also.

You can also sign the CodePink petition in support of the journalist who threw his shoes at Bush here:

CODEPINK are people who were picked on as children. They should protest themselves for being such ugly, nasty, immoral pigs!

Is there anything that is good with this country? Why must you hate all, and then still reap the benefits of this proud country?

well for starters if you dont like it in this country then take your sorry foriegn ass and go else where im getting real sick of hearing about how bush is the cause of this war. ill tell you who started this war it was saddam and terrorists and all who think like them back thinking third world country people and to tell you the truth i think two years is to light a sentence he should get at least ten years and 2 broken arms and all his ribs broke i am dam tired of hearing about all these poor people and countries if it wasnt for our money those dumb asses wouldnt have a pot to piss in but your right we should have never went in there we should have let saddam kill everybody there and let them all live in terror peace activistshave to much time on there hands make yourselfs useful and spend your time with charity or helping the elderly something creative remember idle hands are work of the devil

I'm curious how Saddam started the war? What's your reasoning/evidence behind that statement? If Bush did not cause this war, then what involvement, if any, do you think Bush had at the beginning of the war? Just curious.

I am amazed to find that someone is still cheering for Bush after all he has done to you and to your country and reputation. Who told you that you spent money on Iraqis? It the money of Iraqi oil that keeps you surviving, and Iraqi money, with which Saddam bought weapons from America before that, was put into your dump asses! so Try to use your brains for once and think, WHAT BROUGHT AMERICAN TO IRAQ? ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE APPEARED TO BE NO MASS DISTRUCTION WEAPONS THERE AFTER ALL!

Shoethrower is NOT a foreigner, he is an Iraqi IN Iraq !!! And millions of people around the world stand in solidarity with this Iraqi confronting Bush about the criminal invasion of his land.

ARREST BUSHCO & RICO PNAC/FARA AIPAC...PNAC is Bush/Cheney's "Helter Skelter" !

So are Clinton, Pelosi, Reid, Berger, and Albright. Oh that's right, SAY NO TO WAR UNLESS A DEMOCRAT IS PRESIDENT!

President Bush should thank his star that he was not hit by one of the shoes trown at him. The Iraque people are the ones that feels the pain of the war declared on them because of their oil, only God can judge Bush and his evil ambassador. Why hidding under saddam hussein to distroy the innocent! there are many other option that can be exploted by the Bush administration to get out Saddam hussein if he (Saddam) has done evil against his people. Secondly, thousand of American families have lost loved one because of the war in Iraq, and their children(s) are without fathers! How many of Bush family are involved in the the War in Iraq. Bush should be arrested and tried for crime against humanity and the final punishment will depend on God judgement day. we shall meet on the resurration day.

This must be a joke. If these morons want to protest, why won't they protest the Taliban in Afghanistan? So sad.

It is really sad that you don't even know that Iraq is thousands of miles away from Iraq.

That's sad, don't ya think?

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki
Office of the Prime Minister

Dear Prime Minister:

I am hereby expressing my deep concerns about the confinement of Journalist Mr. Muntadar al-Zaidi.

I neither support violence nor disruptive behavior but Mr. al-Zaidi's action was merely an expression
of discontent about the ongoing slaughter of humans by U.S. military in Iraq. Mr. Bush was not harmed in any way.
On the other hand Mr. Bush is responsible for unimaginable pain and misery among the people of Iraq!

Mr. Bush tried to make the world believe, that the invasion in 2003 was to eliminate the threat of
"Weapons of Mass Destruction". As we now know, all of it was just a big scheme and clearly just lies!

If his administration would have had the sincere goal to free Iraq's people from the despot Saddam Hussein, much
more effective and less harmful actions could have taken place (e.g. CIA, Secret Service).

His sole purpose was to take control of oil fields and to aim at other commercial propositions such as supporting

the arms- and defense industry of the U.S., geostrategic purposes and the expansion of military
installations in the Middle East. Not to underestimate the personal financial benefit he has achieved. The actual
profiteers of this war are various lobbies respectively the Bush Dynasty and NOT the people of Iraq.

I ask you to please release Mr. M. al-Zaidi immediately.

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Nice work ..:)
