Bush whacked Rove on CIA leak

WASHINGTON - An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl Rove two years ago for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told the Daily News.
"He made his displeasure known to Karl," a presidential counselor told The News. "He made his life miserable about this."

Bush has nevertheless remained doggedly loyal to Rove, who friends and even political adversaries acknowledge is the architect of the President's rise from baseball owner to leader of the free world.

As special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald nears a decision, perhaps as early as today, on whether to issue indictments in his two-year probe, Bush has already circled the wagons around Rove, whose departure would be a grievous blow to an already shell-shocked White House staff and a President in deep political trouble.

Asked if he believed indictments were forthcoming, a key Bush official said he did not know, then added: "I'm very concerned it could go very, very badly."

"Karl is fighting for his life," the official added, "but anything he did was done to help George W. Bush. The President knows that and appreciates that."

Other sources confirmed, however, that Bush was initially furious with Rove in 2003 when his deputy chief of staff conceded he had talked to the press about the Plame leak.

Bush has always known that Rove often talks with reporters anonymously and he generally approved of such contacts, one source said.

But the President felt Rove and other members of the White House damage-control team did a clumsy job in their campaign to discredit Plame's husband, Joseph Wilson, the ex-diplomat who criticized Bush's claim that Saddam Hussen tried to buy weapons-grade uranium in Niger.

A second well-placed source said some recently published reports implying Rove had deceived Bush about his involvement in the Wilson counterattack were incorrect and were leaked by White House aides trying to protect the President.

"Bush did not feel misled so much by Karl and others as believing that they handled it in a ham-handed and bush-league way," the source said.

None of these sources offered additional specifics of what Bush and Rove discussed in conversations beginning shortly after the Justice Department informed the White House in September 2003 that a criminal investigation had been launched into the leak of CIA agent Plame's identity to columnist Robert Novak.

A White House spokesman declined to comment, citing the ongoing nature of Fitzgerald's investigation.

I suspect the reason Karen Hughes returned from Texas is that she is to be placed in Rove's spot should he leave. Or, if Cheney does resign, Hughes may be our next Secretary of State behind Condilieza Rice.

I also think George is bored with the job of President. Even strutting around forcing his staff to shower him with praise is becoming boring. He prefers going to a bike path and riding his new toy. Or, spending his hours in the White House gym. He is getting high from exercising since the accolades from his "amercan peeple" are not forthcoming except when confined in a hanger filled with military members that are under orders to applaude when prompted, and respond in support of the OFFICE of Commander in Chief.

His lack of interest in the war, the economy, the lives of the survivors of the hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and anything involving life outside of his orb tells me of how he is wanting to give up the job of President and return to Texas as long as Texas wants him back. That welcome could change. Texas has smartened up before. Remember the Alamo?

I know some Texans that are not thrilled about Dubye coming back to texas. How about him moving to Bagdad Iraq, he is always telling us how well things are going over there, perhaps he can ride his bike down the Bagdad streets. He will fit right in with the insurgents over there, after the way he responded to Katerina and the children and elderly drowning while he was finishing his vacation.
He has been on vacation for five years so whats a few more days?
If Rove is indicted we wont have a president after all he is Bush's brain. He was going to bring respect back to the white house after Clinton had so disgraced it, if what the Bush adminstration has and is doing is respectability i would hate to know what they call disgraceful.

I have thought for some time that Dubya is totally bored with the job he was given...he would rather be whacking brush or riding the bike than playing Prez...he is an incompetent and petulant child in many ways, and the thrill of pretending to be the Macho man who would be king has long worn off..let's hope he just goes away, with his band of evil brothers and sisters with him!

This administration is an embarassment to this country and the people it is supposed to represent. What we have found however is that they represent themselves and their elitist friends, with little concern nor compassion for anyone else. Where are the values they were so adamant about in the elections. They targeted various groups in their campaign and now these people find themselves with problems facing this country reaching far deeper then gun control, gay marriage and the abortion issue. We have seen how their elitist attitude and decisions have turned the world against us leaving us less safe than we ever were, have left a burden of debt our children will face for a long time to come, have generated a serious economic decline in the lives of the average American citizen and created an ever widening class split in our nation. With all this they are still determined to initiate and protect their good old boy policies and friends to the very end. They have displayed to the world the values of greed, power brokering and ego centric decision making in complete conflict with the values they were adamant needed protected for the good of this nation. We better wake up all across this nation!

I loved your comments, and wish I were that succinct in saying what I mean. I agree that this country has been led down the path and it is destroying the America I loved.

Back during my 12 years' service in the Navy we used to joke that the "Good Conduct" medal was the "Don't Get Caught" medal.

Apparently it was just dandy for Karl ("Heil der Fuhrer") Rove to do any damn thing--no matter how slimy and indecent--just as long as he did it SMOOTHLY and SNEAKILY, and avoided public exposure. That's Dubya's definition of "good conduct", and it exposes Spurious George's "morality", the kind he and the other NeoCon(federates) demand should be taught in our public schools!! Yecchh.

Over 200 years ago we also had a Mad King George that governed us.
I and many Americans feel that rightly we should extricate ourselves from this Mad King George. As Gingrich said during Clinton's administration, "If you can't govern, move over and let us do it".
I hope we don't have to cart off too much cat litter after this administration.
