Veterans Raise Awareness of Murders By Veterans
By Mike Hearington
Veterans for Peace Executive Director Michael McPhearson and VFP member Col Ann Wright (ret.) joined local Fayetteville, NC, activists for a day to increase awareness of domestic abuse perpetrated by Ft Bragg military personnel. Sgt. Christina Smith is the latest victim in a series of murders over the last four months. Christina’s husband Sgt. Richard Smith is charged in a murder for hire in which 18-year-old Pvc Mathew Kvapil is charged with 1st degree murder.
The day began with a press conference at the local Quaker house followed by a demonstration at a Ft Bragg entrance gate. Approximately 30 people attended the event, and camera crews from the local television stations were present. The response was mixed from passers by. Afterwards the group headed back to the Quaker house for lunch and discussion about organizing efforts to pressure the military to address the domestic violence problems.
The event concluded with a memorial wreath placed on the grave marker of a woman kill by her husband 34 years ago. Her daughter was present and had been nine years old at the time of the murder in which her mom was stabbed 57 times by her husband, a green beret stationed at Ft Bragg.
