Democratic leadership ‘effectively shelves’ Iran resolution

The Democratic leadership in the House “effectively shelved” a proposed non-binding resolution that “critics say would amount to a naval blockade of Iran because of concerns that it could provoke another war, officials on Capitol Hill said.” The Washington Times reports:
Even though the document would not be a law but a “statement of policy” aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, the Democratic leadership is worried that it could be viewed by the Bush administration as a green light to use military force against Iran, officials said. […]
The draft “demands that the president initiate an international effort” that would impose “stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran.”

Ackerman is one determined SOB. This was his response:

"We'll resubmit it when Congress comes back, and we'll have even more signatures," said Rep. Gary L. Ackerman, New York Democrat and author of the resolution, adding that it now has at least 270 co-sponsors.
It actually has 280 co-sponsors. The Senate version, 580, has 50.
The Democrats, who brought this evil and twisted resolution to the floor in the first place, did cave to citizen pressure. Amen to that.
But AIPAC, the war-lobby that has championed this resolution
( see http://stopaipac.com/iranresolution.htm ) , won big too. They got 281 members of the House (of ill-repute) to sign on to this. So isn't the message of this non-binding resolution already been sent to Iran?
The messages being is that the Democratic Congress, by a substantial majority, wants military action now. No matter how catastrophic the consequences may be. to be led by President Bush. There will be no real diplomacy, say with the goal of eliminating nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Certainly no talk of ending the US nuclear weapons "modernization". The only "diplomacy" we can expect is that there will be a call for Iran to halt its nuclear power program (that it has a right to pursue) unconditionally, or the US Congress will support war on Iran.
Which may be a strong incentive for Iran to actually have a nuclear weapons program.
This is not because of common sense, this is because Congress believes that aipac cannot be disappointed. So even the best of them are willing to sign on to the worst of resolutions, as this exercise shows.
We need to show Congress that AIPAC does not speak for us. This October we can do that in Chicago, where aipac is going to be having their "national summit". Outside this festival for war with Iran and continued apartheid rule for Palestinians-- people of goodwill, including Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Secular... everyone that supports human rights, international law, global nuclear disarmament... and peace for Palestinians and Israelis, will join togethersay NO to AIPAC and its leadership for war, occupation, and the status quo, and YES to a new foreign policy that puts people first, that respects international law, that respects human rights... this is the way to peace... not constant threat of military actions against other nations.
