Kucinich Testifies on Abuses of Executive Power

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 25, 2008) — Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) testified about President Bush’s culpability for leading the country to war today at a House Judiciary Committee hearing entitled “Executive Power and its Constitutional Limitations.” The full text of the statement follows:

Our country has been at war in Iraq, and has occupied the streets and villages of Iraq for five years, four months, and 6 days. The war has caused the deaths of 4,127 American soldiers and the deaths of as many as one million innocent Iraqis. The war will cost the American people upwards of $3 trillion and is the main contributing factor to the destruction of our domestic economy.

Mr. Chairman, I would ask unanimous consent to enter S.J. Res. 45 into the record. The primary justifications for going to war, outlined in the legislation which the White House sent to Congress in October of 2002, have been determined conclusively to be untrue:

* Iraq was not “continuing to threaten the national security interests of the United States”
* Iraq was not “continuing to possess and develop a significant chemical and biological weapons capability. . .”
* Iraq was not “actively seeking a nuclear weapons capability”
* Iraq did not have the “willingness to attack, the United States”
* Members of Al Qaeda were not “known to be in Iraq”
* Iraq had not “demonstrated capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction. . .”
* Iraq could not “launch a surprise attack against the United States or its Armed Forces”
* Therefore there was not an “extreme magnitude of harm that would result to the United States and its citizens from such an attack”
* The aforementioned did not “justify the use of force by the United States to defend itself”
* Iraq had no connection with the attacks of 9/11 or with al Qaeda's role in 9/11
* Iraq possessed no weapons of mass destruction to transfer to anyone
* Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and therefore had no capability of launching a surprise attack against the United States or its Armed Forces and no capability to provide them to international terrorists who would do so

However, many Members of Congress relied on these representations from the White House to inform their decision to support the legislation that authorized the use of force against Iraq. We all know present and former colleagues who have said that if they knew then what they know now, they would not have voted to permit an attack upon Iraq.

The war was totally unnecessary, unprovoked and unjustified. The question for Congress is this: what responsibility do the President and members of his Administration have for that unnecessary, unprovoked and unjustified war? The rules of the House prevent me or any witness from utilizing familiar terms. But we can put two and two together in our minds. We can draw inferences about culpability.

Mr. Chairman, I would ask unanimous consent to enter H. Res. 333, H. Res. 1258, and H. Res. 1345 into the record. I request that each Member read the three bills I have authored, bills which are now awaiting consideration by the Judiciary Committee. I am confident the reader will reach the same conclusions that I have about culpability.

What, then, should we do about it?

The decision before us is whether to honor our oath as Members of Congress to support and defend the Constitution that has been trampled time and again over the last seven years.

The decision before us is whether to stand up for the checks and balances designed by our founding fathers to prevent excessive power grabs by either the judicial, legislative or executive branch of government.

The decision before us is whether to restore faith in government, in justice, and in the rule of law.

The decision before us is whether Congress will endorse with its silence the methods used to take us into the Iraq war.

The decision before us is whether to demand accountability for one of the gravest injustices imaginable.

The decision before us is whether Congress will stand up to tell future Presidents that America has seen the last of these injustices, not the first.

I believe the choice is clear.

I ask this committee to think, and then to act, in order to enable this Congress to right a very great wrong and to hold accountable those who have misled this Nation.

If America really had a choice of candidates for the Oval office, Dennis would be our candidate, not Obama. He is a great man in the tradition of Jefferson or Adams. It is tragic he will not be the next president. He alone would have restored the republic, the others will keep the dictator powers grabbed by the profane Bush administration.

Dennis will go down in history as one of the very few who took his oath of office seriously. He is probably one of the greatest men of our time, history will treat him more kindly than his greedy contempories.

Dennis Kucinich is a man of honor and truth and I am grateful for all his work against insurmountable odds to force this administration's activities into the light. Pathetic the congress is too corrupt to recognize or care they are killing their own freedoms as well as those of the people.

I remember him as the young mayor of Cleveland, OH. and how he stood up for the rights of his fellow citizens and how he got on the wrong side of big money (corporations) back in the 70's. He does not make deals.

He is true to his word ... can't be bought.

I too remember Dennis back in the 70's. Dennis Kucinich was so much for the "People", that big business gave him the nick name "Dennis the Menace'! Back then, Dennis stood for the people as a whole, with a balanced perspective for the good of all; business and the worker alike, and he still does today! I truly wish Dennis was running for President! I feel Big Business/Corporates have again shanghaied our elections.

Listen to the words of a founding father. Remember the principles this country stood for and can stand for again. Do not waver in the face of tyranny - may the "Rights of Man" once again triumph.

The Constitution has no requirement that one must vote for any political party. The only political party I belong to is the party of "We the People...."

While I wholeheartedly agree with the impeachment of the president, vice-president, etc etc, I cannot stand up and cheer for Dennis Kucinich without reservation.

The abuses by the administration: Iraq, domestic spying, politicizing the justice department, etc etc have been ongoing for the ENTIRE TIME GWB HAS BEEN IN OFFICE. Where the hell was this years ago when it could've actually prevented some deaths and the ruination of the US Economy?

I would like representative Kucinich to answer that question: Why is this action occurring now, and not years ago?

Putting this together has not been easy , though. A lot of documented proof has come out two years or more AFTER the Iraq War was started. As one example, Downing Street Memos actually occurred in 2002, but were not made public until 2005. The Impeachment Movement began in 2005.

IMPEACH BUSHCO & RICO PNAC/AIPAC...PNAC is Bush/Cheney's "Helter Skelter" !

WE MUST DEFEAT MCCAIN!!!

Hello All,

I will be voting for Obama and Biden in November, and I just signed Kucinich's petition for impeachment proceedings. For those of you that have not seen the movie I am about to reference, you need to watch it. It puts everything into perspective about Bush, Cheney, 911, wars and history, etc. It is a must see; I've watched it three times and it just blew my mind, as it changes your entire perspective. Anyway, it's a two hour movie that covers all the facts in one place. I will provide you with two links to access it; whichever is most convenient for you:

http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com (scroll to the bottom of the site's homepage, where it says 'watch zeitgeistmovie here') - you can also download it to your computer there too.

http://www.youtube.com/user/facts4americans (where you see the playlists, click on the playlist that says 'facts', then click on the zeitgeist movie there).

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Warm regards,
Dani

Do your homework; Research the legislation Kucinich has introduced, and the stances he has taken on every issue. Dennis has been vocal and active in Congress all along against this administration's abuses of power, and has been asking you to join him in any way you as a citizen can. The question is, "where the hell" was/is everybody else...
If you truly would like his answer to your question, search for it in speeches/writings/interviews on line or on his website; if you don't find what you're looking for, ask him. He's probably one of the few politicians who might be able to give you a truly Free, "No Strings Attached" answer.
It would be misinformed in the extreme to call Dennis Kucinich "behind" in taking action on any of these issues.

Dennis is one man, probably the only one left besides Ron Paul and a few others who hasn't been manipulated by money! In essence, we have the finest government money can buy; minus a few "Patriots" like Dennis and Ron!

Quote: "I believe the choice is clear." As starkly clear as this choice is, I fear Congress will "choose poorly".

-Dr. Donald B. MacGowan

I would like to hear Dennis on the "Thom Hartman (Sirius) Radio Show".

...and kept there by the MSM. He is indeed the one who should be running for president. Barring that, Obama could do far worse for a vice president. I may simply write Mr. Kucinich in, as the MSM has no problem with Mr. Obama, and he shows indications of being as firmly in corporate pockets as Bush or McCain, but he's "nicer about it". He is also clearly a globalist. We desperately need a statesman, an honest man, a patriot. Dennis Kuchinich is the only man like that I know of.

Dennis,
Why are we now awaiting consideration by the Judiciary Committee for impeachment, when Joe Biden sits on that committee? Oh, wait. He's now the VP nominee.

As a constitutional lawyer, Barrak Obama, compromises and tramples his way over the constitution on the way to the White House, we must consider his running mate, Joe Biden. The question du jour is, what stake in the VP nomination does Joe Biden have to dissuaded him from pursuing impeachment for the office(s) that he now seeks, while sitting on the Judiciary committee? This, of course, in due consideration for the oath of office that he has sworn to defend, namely, of enemies foreign and DOMESTIC, to the constitution of the United States of America.

Let's see...I'm supposed to be entrusted to defend the constitution of the United States of America, when I swear my oath of office to defend it, yet, when called upon to make decisions to live up to my oath of office, to defend the constitution, in the face of clear evidence, I might add, I defer my duty in order to get elected?

Shame. Shame on you Joe Biden, Barrak Obama and Nancy Pelosi, for your impeachment's off the table in order to sweep crimes under the carpet in order to remain elect able. I say BS, on you.

We hear that the surge is working. Why wasn't "the surge" used atleast 3 years ago, when Tommy Franks wanted more soldiers in Iraq?
Who had the power to deny Gen. Franks?

We need to unite and revolt. Let's march on Washington and demand Bush and Cheney be held accountable for trying to destroy our democracy and replacing it with and imperilist regime.
