Congress Hears Ringing Call for Impeachment

The House Judiciary Committee today, Friday, July 25th, will put impeachment squarely back "on the table" and restored to its prominent place in our Constitution.

Elliott Adams, President of Veterans for Peace, and a descendant of American revolutionary Sam Adams, will deliver this prepared testimony, in which, if his 5 minutes allow him to reach his conclusion, he will say:

"For us veterans, when our time came, we volunteered our very lives for this republic; for the principle of freedom for all, for equal opportunity for all, to defend the Constitution and the principles embodied in the Declaration of Independence, and to guarantee the opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Now, Congressmen, it is your time, and I hear there is not enough time! Now is your time, and I hear it will not be good for one party or the other party! Now is your time, and I hear there is not enough political will around you! When our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence they were not worried about political will, or how much time there was, or about any parties' political future, they were just worried they were going to be hanged by the neck. But they did what was right. Now it is your time to standup. Einstein said – 'The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.'"

Bruce Fein, Associate Deputy Attorney General, 1981-82, and Chairman of the American Freedom Agenda, will deliver this prepared testimony, which begins thus:

"If President George W. Bush had knocked to enter the constitutional convention in Philadelphia in 1787, presiding convention president George Washington would have denied him admission. Thereby hangs an alarming tale. The executive branch has vandalized the Constitution every bit as much [sic] the barbarians vandalized Rome in 410 AD. The executive branch has destroyed the Constitution's time-honored checks and balances and raced the nation perilously close to executive despotism. The executive branch rejects the basic philosophical tenets of the United States. It does not accept that America was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that sovereignty in a republican form of government lies with the people; that there are no vassals or serfs in the Constitution's landscape; that every man or woman is a king or queen but no one wears a crown; and, that the rule of law is the nation's civic religion. The Founding Fathers fashioned impeachment as a remedy for attacks against the constitutional order."

The first panel Friday morning will include Congressman Dennis Kucinich making a case for impeachment based on the articles of impeachment he has drafted against Cheney and Bush. Also on the first panel will be Republican Congressman Walter Jones who has sought to end the funding of the occupation of Iraq, and who has expressed support for former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's proposal to prosecute former President George W. Bush, once out of office, for murder. Congressman Maurice Hinchey, a supporter of impeachment, is also on the panel. The last witness is Congressman Brad Miller, but as the saying goes, "Three out of four ain't bad." And we've been mercifully spared Congresswoman Jane Harman, who at one point was scheduled to testify.

The second of two planned panels is even better, and includes Adams, Fein, Bugliosi, and six other witnesses. One of them, Elizabeth Holtzman, Former Representative from New York, will speak very persuasively for impeachment. Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson, Founder and President, High Roads for Human Rights, and the former Mayor of Salt Lake City, is likely to speak in support of impeachment too, while also supporting other alleged remedies. One chronicler of Bush and Cheney crimes who in recent months has opposed impeachment is John Dean; he had been scheduled to appear but did not make the final cut. However, there are four witnesses on the second panel who may not help the cause of impeachment. Frederick A. O. Schwarz, Jr., Senior Counsel, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, is a supporter of restoring the rule of law, but whether he'll advocate restoration of the rule of the Constitution we shall see. The other three almost certainly will not. They are: Bob Barr, Former Representative from Georgia, 2008 Libertarian Nominee for President; Stephen Presser, Raoul Berger Professor of Legal History, Northwestern University School of Law; and Jeremy A. Rabkin, Professor of Law, George Mason University School of Law.

The big unknown is which members of the House Judiciary Committee, which has 40 members, will show up for a Friday hearing. A number of Republicans have already left town, and some of the most pro-impeachment Democrats have committed to being present. Watch Robert Wexler, Tammy Baldwin, and Sheila Jackson-Lee for the most likely statements in support of beginning a true impeachment hearing.

Some of the witnesses in the past couple of days had expressed frustration with congressional rules forbidding accusations against the president, rules deriving from prohibitions on speaking ill of the king of England. But witnesses have been able to work around those rules by referring to "the executive branch" and other similar locutions rather than "the president" or "the vice president." While Chairman John Conyers almost certainly has every intention of preventing the commencement of a real impeachment hearing, he and his staff appear to have opened this one up significantly to the obvious and overdocumented case for impeachment. Our hope lies in the likelihood that Conyers' calculation is wrong when he supposes that Democrats will benefit from publicizing the case for impeachment and not suffer for failing to pursue it. If the public makes clear its demand for action, not just talk, the door that is cracking open may be very difficult to shut. "Stop the preaching and start impeaching" is a cheer that may be heard at a gathering of impeachment activists outside the Rayburn Building immediately following the hearing.

The day before the hearing, some of those impeachment advocates gathered at the National Press Club, including myself, Ray McGovern, Bruce Fein, Cindy Sheehan, Cynthia Papermaster, and Crystal Kim. Videos of what they had to say, and their questions and answers with the media, are posted at http://youtube.com/afterdowningstreet

Scroll up and read it, folks. It's an absolute must.

American soldiers and innocent civilians are being blown to pieces for a mountain of lies that not one member of the 110th Congress can legitimately deny.

Elected officials are standing stone-faced as the Constitution they all swore to support and defend is being run through the shredder.

Our national sovereignty and financial solvency are circling the drain.

And John Conyers is worried what Fox News Channel will say if he actually attemtps to hold the Bush criminals accountable with an actual impeachment investigation.

Now is the time, Mr. Conyers. Step up or step aside.

Fortunately we have CSPAN and afterdowningstreet.org.
Otherwise, there would be NO COVERAGE of it at all.
Most of the committee ran home, we have craven cowards at the helm of this country. FISA was the last nail in the coffin of this once great republic. We live in a totalitarian dictatorship, I am not surprised at any of this.

Bless the few who are trying to fight for our dead republic. The fact statements against Bush are not allowed is a joke. I agree with John Perry, we are sold out. These hearings are too little too late, it is over. We have lost our country.

Sadly, I agree--there is no hope left for "We The People". Were there NOT a political party system, I believe there would be a chance; or maybe we would have never reached this point. If all persons seeking office were "Independents" then a following for a candidate would be based on her/his stance and opinion on the issues. But as long as we have the Lamar Smiths in office metaphorically wearing their "team" jerseys, instead of being open-minded and capable of independent thought, this cycle of political Super Bowl will never change.

I refuse to support the federal government with another penny of my hard-earned money from my sweat and blood. I encourage ALL to resist the Federal Income Tax. I don't need to hear the argument about "getting into trouble" or "my taxes are taken out of my paycheck" or "I have a family to worry about". Your family would be better served with the extra money THAT IS YOURS than turning it over to the Washington Mafia. (No offense to the real mafia that has MUCH more honor!)

If nothing comes of today's circus then I have to sign out for good and pay attention locally instead of nationally. The feds should just put up the "gone fishin'" sign and cede their power to the states. I turned sixty a few days ago and never ever thought I'd see the end of this country. BUT...it has arrived.

Nothing will come out of today's circus, it is a mockery.
It is the cruelest joke of all, and it is on us.
I also have signed out of political activities, it is a waste of time. I am through fighting a government that no longer listens. I am putting my work in order, and plan to emigrate to another country to live. The work I am fortune enough to do will be welcome anywhere; that is the good news.

At the rate things are going, this will soon be a terrible place to live, and I'm not sticking around for it. Totalitarian dictatorship is too much for me. I am close to you in age, I share your amazement. We have been sliding down a steep hill for many years. We are nearing the bottom now.

Have been in the trenches with everyone here for quite a while. I know your frustration. If it suits you to pick up and head for brighter lands then I do wish you well.

But...has everyone thought about how many "sad days" and frustrations, tribulations and risks our founding fathers struggled through. When I say risks I really mean risks. If they didn't hang in there we'd still be a British Colony.

Look at any major change we've had in this country. The struggles have always been long and hard. The Civil Rights movement is still a work in progress, but to achieve some of its greatest moments it took years and extraordinary sacrifice.

As for me and my house, I'll fight 'til the end.

Yep, they hung in there all right but remember that in the end they had to FIGHT to claim their independence. We, as a "modern society" do not have that option; the guns are in the hands of the powerful people's programmed puppets. Programmed brother prepared to shoot "awake" brother at the command from above. Remember Kent State?

Our only weapons are words and words won't amount to a hill of beans against the money and the powerful and the ones with the guns and bombs. Meditate on this: We are all equal by birth but unequal in our life's chosen course of sheep or lion. And, I'm afraid, we lions are in a deep, deep minority.

R.A. I really do understand what you're saying. And, by no means would I minimize the extraordinary uphill battle we "lions" who "are in the deep, deep minority" face.

Still, I believe there are methods between "words" and "guns."

MLK Jr. believed that. Union organizers believed that. Alice Paul believed there were But, indeed many suffered and died as a result and there are very few who are willing or aware in our country to take those risks. I'm just saying I'm still willing to be counted in the struggle.

of what is going on in politics.
This last two weeks I got put on a crew I had not worked with for over a year. I am twice as old as these fellows and I have to put up with their talk about sex (but they are sounding more mature than a few years ago.

I casually mentioned that there was an impeachment inquiry for GW on Friday and they were dumbfounded! They never talk politics and they dislike GW. I gave them this web address (AfterDowningStreet). I told them that the news media was worthless and that the 2000 and 2004 elections were stolen.

These young men were attentative and polite. I have my views and share yours but I refuse to be a political evangelist. I am no longer a Democrat.

You can lay down like dogs.... dig your own graves like slaves ....... and take your bullets like men. Or your can punch them in the face one good time..... take your bullets like men .... and make them dig their own @#@*&%@ holes. Eventually they will get tired of digging!

The strong and united WILL stand ...... the weak and divided .... will get what they deserve. Take that to the bank!(before it closes and the Sivillian Service... I mean the "C"ivillian Service has you hauled off for tresspassing)

I'm going to tell you all a little secret that the government doesn't want you to know ........ To fight this tyranny all you have to do is take care of eachother!

I had a dream awhile back and in it St. Peter was giving me a tour of the afterlife. We came upon a huge chamber with a big pot of stew in the middle of a rather large circle of people. They were all crucified to stakes. On their right hands they had strapped to them long poles with spoons attached to the ends. The poles were long enough to reach the pot of stew however they were too long for them to reach the spoons to their mouths so needless to say these people were all starved to the point of being nothing but skin and bones. The pain and suffering was quite evident on their faces..... it was a truley horrifying sight. "What is this place!?" I asked Peter in discust. "This is hell my friend..... these poor souls are to live out an eternity of suffering here." Peter said very somberly. Finally he motioned for us to move on and I very happily followed. Next we came to another large chamber and it looked completely identical to the last one. Except in this room the people who were crucified to the stakes were fat, and happy, and merrily talking to one another. "And what is this room?" I asked ... this time rather confused. "Well ... This is heaven my friend!" He answered equally confused by my question. "Well, what's the difference between this room and the last room?" Peter smiled at me and said "In heaven ... people are not consumed with worry about feeding only themselves!"

i am not a great researcher and yet i found something today, that might explain the why of the Dems inaction., and that is that they are culpable also. bush does what isreal tells him to because they have pictures of his daddy setting up the arms for hostages swap with Iran, and buying the election of Reagan. the way most and this was done and the way the bush family got to hide an incredible amount of crimes is through the use of a data base known as Main Core. Look up the WIKIi then do a search for," John Lear+INSLAW".
Computer software that maintains data of over 4 million threats to the US, and was sold to other countries, israel, the saudis, and then see if you can find anything about C.O.G, or continuance of government which is a plan originally set in place to facilitate a military government after a nuclear attack yet which has been used for political reasons......google, "Hanson's Affadavit" and if you can't read the whole thing then search for, "The October Surprise Weapons Flights", and start from there.

Do we know yet where Congressman Bobby Scott stands? I heard his statement, but still not clear where he stands on following through on impreachment. He needs to stand up for his constituents!

There was a very, very strange man testifying as he said, for the "minority (Republican) party," at their request. He spoke about how emotional people were on the subject of impeachment with EXTREME emotion. He's supposed to be a learned scholar on the subject of government, but knew very little about impeachment. Why did we not have a government scholar that actually knew something about impeachment testifying on our behalf?
