Ask Conyers to Allow Kucinich to Present Impeachment Articles to House Judiciary Committee

On Thursday Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who had already introduced 3 articles of impeachment against Cheney and 35 against Bush introduced a single article of impeachment against Bush charging him with misleading Congress into a war on Iraq. Also on Thursday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi told the media that she expected the Judiciary Committee to consider the matter. And Kucinich held a press conference at which he said that what he wants is an opportunity to present his proposals to the Judiciary Committee.

Let's make sure that Committee Chairman John Conyers grants this request. Phone him now at 202-225-3951. Post here what he tells you.

If you're able to speak with Conyers or his staff at any length, please remind them that Bush and Cheney and members of their administration are refusing to comply with numerous subpoenas and even contempt citations, as well as refusing to answer questions by claiming "executive privilege." During an impeachment hearing, there is no executive privilege. The Judiciary Committee should hold an impeachment hearing of Bush and Cheney on refusal to comply with oversight. It's the fastest way to justice and the only chance of establishing any oversight.

"One thing is clear, however — there will be no move to remove Bush from office, despite Pelosi's comments this morning, or Kucinich's resolution."

This administration and its likes infiltrating the Republican Party is destroying the country, wreaking havoc upon the rest of the world and corrupting the GOP. Too many good people are leaving the Republican Party to become Independent. Unfortunately, you loose effectiveness as an Independent because they are not really organized. And impeachment needs to be a non-partisan issue to succeed. We need Republicans backing impeachment, yes they're out there and they are plentiful (they feel betrayed by lack of fiscal responsibility, small government, state's rights, non-international intervention, family and moral values - Bush & co. have betrayed all!)- we just need them to come forth instead of dropping out in disgust. I run Republicans for Impeachment.com The site received over 4,000 hits the very next day! We include ex-Republicans. Visit republicansforimpeachment.com and sign the petition. Call Republican reps to come for impeachment. I believe they are ready - they are disgusted with Bush & Co, too. Once they do, it's a done deal!

Under this Administration we are less safe, less free. To best protect America, we should be an example of democracy and a free society to the rest of the world. Support Impeachment, the ultimate democratic tool.
- Susan, Northeast Impeachment Coalition

...and it is OK for you to evolve if you discover that you are being deceived!

I agree with your comment about the need for republicans to contact and lobby their representatives for accountability, too. And, I wish they would. But, as a Democrat and having written hundreds of letters and phone calls I inevitably became completely disgusted with the Democratic Party. I have Feinstein and Pelosi as representatives. Finally, I left to join the Greens.

I agree with your comment about the Independent Party being too vague and disorganized. But, what about the Green Party? They have many well defined platforms and are gaining ground in many city governments. Their most important/progressive platform would be instant run off voting. We will never have instant run off voting if we wait for the Republicans and Democrats to adopt it.

Our founders were against the party system. Instant run off voting would put an end to the two party stranglehold that the predators have on us. -Always voting for the lessor of two evils.... how insane.

Join the Greens, then vote strategically. But, do not endorse that which you oppose!! I don't mean to come off all preachy... I'm searching, too.

But, If these two political parties begin seeing their base leave in disgust, perhaps then, they will change their trajectory.

at about 1:50 p.m. (Mountin Savings Time) and left a message with the girl that answered the phone.

I followed your advice and asked for him to allow Congressman Kucinich to present the case in front of the full committee!

She said the normal thing: I'll give him the message.

You have done an immense service to the nation with your long, strong dedication to the causes of impeaching Bush and Cheney. I honor you, and respect you, for the monumental service you've been providing to this embattled Democracy.

But to judge from recent interviews you've conducted, and to judge from the recommendations you make in this article, you appear to suffer from a superiority complex that makes you condescend to such people of quality as Vincent Bugliosi, John Dean, and John Conyers.

Mr. Conyers has served in the House for approximately your entire lifetime. He knows a thing or two about how to conduct himself, and how to chair the Judiciary Committee, and HE DOES NOT NEED INSTRUCTION FROM YOU, OR ME, IN HOW TO DO HIS WORK.

Please try to trust in the possibility that Conyers and Kucinich and their colleagues have been working quietly, steadily, stealthily behind the scenes to set the stage for the drama that is about to unfold.

Please ENCOURAGE Mr. Conyers and his colleagues -- without presuming to INSTRUCT them.

Thank you again for your admirable service to us all, and to our nation. And thank you for allowing me to express this constructive criticism.

might have worked in December 2006

now it doesn't

i also know some of what you think i'm guessing

trust me :-)

Do you actually contend that Conyers is unaware that members of the executive branch have been refusing to comply with subpoenas, and too stupid to realize that this represents a threat to the Constitutional system of checks and balances under which Congress is supposed to exercise oversight over the exeutive branch?

Here's some possible enlightenment for you:

By John Conyers

Today was the deadline for a Judiciary Committee subpoena issued to Karl Rove, demanding his appearance before the Committee to testify on his role in the politicization of the Department of Justice and the politically selective prosecutions of Democrats. Unfortunately, Mr. Rove chose not to show up.

The claim that Mr. Rove and the White House make is that high-level aides to the president are totally immune from compelled congressional testimony. Not that there are certain subjects they cannot discuss in a public hearing, nor that the White House has a right to review questions that are asked, but that they are in a class entirely by themselves -- a separate group that is above the reach of a subpoena and, consequently, above the law.

Over the past 18 months, congressional inquiries have uncovered a level of politicization that runs the breadth of the administration and profoundly threatens one of the core elements of our democracy -- equal justice under law. We have seen it in the firing of nine U.S. Attorneys for partisan political purposes, in the hiring practices at the Justice Department, and apparently in the politically selective prosecution of Democrats like Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. Thorough investigation of these abuses of power requires that Congress get answers from the Executive Branch. By ignoring the Judiciary Committee subpoena, Karl Rove and the White House once again showed their utter disregard for our system of checks and balances, for Congress as a co-equal branch of government, and ultimately for the American people.

The question that now confronts the Judiciary Committee and, ultimately, the full House of Representatives, is what action to take in the face of such blatant defiance of the rule of law. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I am considering all options. Regardless of the path we take, the end result must be the same: the full restoration of our Constitutional system of checks and balances and the principle that no one -- not Karl Rove and not the president -- is above the law.

the point is to tell him what we are aware of and what we insist on and what we want and to push him to seriously consider taking this particular action

is that Conyers is not the sort of man who is going to respond well to being told "what we insist on," or to attempts "to push him ...."

I simply hoped to persuade you that with a man like Conyers, you are more likely to win him over if you treat him with respect, with the kind of courtesy appropriate to one of his age, and with deference to his position as Chairman, than by cursing him, instructing him, or pushing him to see and do things your way.

In any case, thanks for allowing me to express myself.

Having tried that for 3/4 of the time allotted, and with the future of our Republic on the line, it's worth pushing him. I'm sorry that you've fantasized that this must involve cursing at him. I intend it to involve his phone ringing off the hook all day and night with requests that he begin impeachment. You should get as many people to call as possible whom you can advise to speak to him and his staff with exactly the attitude you think best, but please get them to call!

As I understand it, AfterDowningStreet is your blog, and under your control. You, yourself, "moderate" the comments before you permit them to be published.

I have not "fantasized" the fact that the comments that YOU publish in YOUR blog are often full of character assassinations of John Conyers, and much cursing at him. Would "Fuck John Conyers" qualify as cursing at him, in your lexicon? And since you show so much concern about other people's honor, are you honorable enough to take responsibility for what you choose to publish?

Since you evidently could not keep your superior self from issuing instructions to me, too -- "You should get as many people to call as possible..." -- please be advised that I will ignore your unwanted instructions, and continue to wage my own campaign for the impeachments of Bush and Cheney in my own ways. Your way is your way -- but contrary to what you seem to think, your way is not the only way.

And nothwithstanding my disagreements with you over the most effective ways to deal with people, I will continue to honor the great efforts you have made, and I will continue to hope that your efforts will help to achieve what we are all working for.

those who say honor and respect Conyers or those who say fuck him, but that doesn't change the fact that I didn't ask anyone to call him up and curse at him - I asked them to call him up and ask him to hold impeachment hearings - which is actually how our democracy was designed to work and ow good representatives want it to work. It is actually not an insult to a representative to call them up and tell them how you'd like to be represented - not in a democractic republic.

"The political tide begins to be turning and that is why I feel so strongly that we should aggressively push for inherent contempt for Karl Rove and impeachment hearings for President Bush and Vice President Cheney."

A lot of people have been pushing for a long time. Conyers has the example of Martin Luther King but apparently he does not have the courage of Martin Luther King. He believes that if by some miracle we get Mr. Two-faced Obama elected all our troubles will be over.

Not so! Impeachment is needed to cut out the cancer that is eating our nation's soul and its values. If we do not come to the aid of our country now, November will be too late and January will way past too late.

Whether we instruct, advise or beg we need to politely tell Mr. Conyers that sometimes silence is betrayal.

And make it an even dozen. :)

Exactly nothing.

Apparently Mr. Conyers and many others actually do need to be instructed.

We have public admissions from George W. Bush himself, of not just his approval for illegal warrantless wiretapping, but also his approval of an illegal torture program.

We have the 935 documented Bush administation lies in the run-up to the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq.

We have the finding of the Senate intelligence committee, that Bush knowingly lied to "justify" the invasion of Iraq.

We have the results of the 2007 GAO study that reveals Bush's actual violation of at least 30% of the laws that he claimed the non-existent power to violate via his illegal signing statements.

We have the refusal to comply with subpoenas, which was precisely one of the Articles of Impeachment drawn up against Nixon.

We have a 350-plus page book from John Conyers himself, Constitution in Crisis (released in 2006), which impeccably documents the impeachable offenses of the Bush administration.

We have eighteen months since John Conyers became Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

And we have yet to have impeachment hearings.

That's not just unacceptable. It smacks of willing complicity in the crimes of the Bush administration.

The time for being nice has long passed. Mr. Conyers needs to do his job or step aside for a House Judiciary Chairman who is actually willing to support and defend the Constitution.

You are so right on, John Perry !

There is no excuse for John Conyers not having initiated Impeachment Hearings on the very day that he took over chairmanship of the Judiciary Committe in January of 2007 ... some 18 months ago. All the evidence and even admissions of impeachable offenses prior to that day were overwhelming ... only to have more and more come forward every day since ... each, while for each death of an American GI in Iraq there are also about 250 deaths of Iraqi civilians. John Conyers, and every other member of the House of Representatives (both Democrat and Republican) who has not called for and signed on to an Impeachment Resolution, is knowingly and willingly an accessory to the crimes of the Bush-Cheney Administration. To me they are just as criminal as Bush and Cheney and they should be treated by all the American People, their employers, as such !

Phil Restino
Co-Chair, Central Florida Veterans For Peace (VFP Chapter 136)

John Conyers has done absolutely nothing.

He has refused to arrest Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, Josh Bolton, Dick Cheney, etc. for failing to comply with subpeonas and other legal obstruction of judical proceedings.

He has refused to even hold a single hearing on Dick Cheney's willful abuses of power and treasonous acts -- even though he stands at 18% in the polls and few people other than Bush (and FOX News) would risk their own reputation to ever defend him.

John Conyers has, like a doormat, let this administration just do whatever it pleases and make a total mockery out of the existence of the House Judicial Committee. Anyone in the Bush adminstration can just flat out refuse to testify, thumb their noses at subpeonas, lie about anything with total immunity, all with no serious penalty or action ever taken against them.

This is all okay with John Conyers. He just wait another 5 days and send them one more letter (for them to laugh at and throw in the wastebasket).

Richard Nixon is rolling in his grave today wishing that John Conyers and Nancy Pelosi had been in charge during the 1970s. Not only would they have been no impeachment, Spiro Agnew would have still been in power along with Nixon, and the Vietnam War would have gone for another 3 years.

John Conyers is a fraud.

I called the number & got the HJC and they transferred me to Rep. Conyers office.

I told a staff person who I was & where I was calling from (Charlotte, NC). I asked that Rep. Conyers get the HJC to grant a hearing on Dennis Kucinich's Article of Impeachment that he was introducing today, or may have already introduced by now.

I told her that Bush & Cheney had ignored numerous citations & refused to answer important questions claiming Executive Privilege. I told her that during impeachment hearings they would not be able to claim Executive Privilege.

I asked that they please hold impeachment hearings.

She was very polite, told me should would pass my message along, and thanked for me calling.

HJC answered & took note of my call for Conyers to have a hearing for Kucinich to present this impeachment article to be considered.

They do take note of every call.

Generally 10-20 calls on any single issue are considered a priority. A hundred is a major issue.

Can't we get 10,000 people to call? How many readers are there on ADS?

on a slow day

I called the judiciary committee number, got a staffer who listened and said she would be sure to pass my message on at 1640

The House chair granted it right after Dennis offered Bush's impeachment resolution. So, he's "out of the office" this afternoon.

I talked to a Conyers' staff member named Mr. Morgan. I reminded him that it was Conyers' duty to start impeachment hearings against the most criminal administration in history. He responded by saying there weren't enough votes. I said that the Constitution was not a political document and it does not state that elected officials should only be impeached if there are enough votes to convict. He said he didn't want to argue with me.
Chris Dorsey

I beg your ppardon for my ignorance; I haven't been very active politically before. When I call Conyer's office, what do I say?

And another newbie question. . .does it even matter now anyway? Bush/Cheny have done an enormous amount of damage to our country and the world; they should have been impeached years ago. But at this point in the game, will it matter? They are almost out of there - will anything good come of impeaching them at this late date?

the point is to restore the rule of law for the future

just ask for impeachment hearings please, with a side of justice!

it's very easy

thanks for calling!

Bill McLaughlin

Called and got a staffer who was polite and seemingly attentive. At the conclusion of a somewhat lengthy discussion he said he'd let Rep Conyers know of the call, I then asked if the content of the discussion would be passed along and he said : "no, we are just keeping a tally of those for and against." So it appears that citing all the reasons is in vain...only the tally matters...something that can easily be grossly altered by Rethuglicans or Wimpocrats.
And BTW it is my belief that the most compelling reason to impeach is to prevent a catastopic attack on Iran...the drumbeat for war gets louder with each passing day as Congress debates b.s. items and ignores real possibilities that should not be taken lightly.

Look, when some murderer and felon has their hands around your throat and is choking the life out of you - that is not the time to debate, consider alternatives, weigh strategies, etc. NO, it's time to grab the offender by the balls and carry on from that point. The entire Bush administration is a murderous felon that will not stop choking the life out of the United States and OUR Constitution... what's your problem, Mr. John Conyers? Fight back you old fart or make room for someone who will!

The machine said "messages would be checked periodically," which I interpret to mean "when the cows come home."

I called the HJC today and said I wanted Impeachment Hearings started, and also, that I wanted Karl Rove arrested. I watched Dennis on the floor of the House today. Then I called his office in DC to thank him. And I mailed a letter to John Conyers this week.

many weeks (last I heard, six) pass before snail mail gets to congress since anthrax. Think it is a good idea to send a letter, but I suggest emailing it and send letter so they have to see it again.

I just sent this fax to Mr Conyers,
======================

Mr. Conyers,

PLEASE!
Proceed with impeachment hearings on the article of impeachment presented by Dennis Kucinich! The complete contempt displayed to subpoenas by Bush administration officials can not be tolerated! The damage to this country caused by the totally unnecessary Iraq war undertaken for falsified reasons rests squarely on the Bush administration. This would certainly be a “high crime” under the constitution and MUST NOT escape investigation!

Do NOT ALLOW Nancy Pelosi’s narrow-minded political agenda to stand in the way of this moral imperative! If the evidence dictates a senate trial it must happen no matter what Pelosi wants! She is a corrupt politician and should be impeached as well!

After speaking to "John F." of the Judiciary Committee staff, he switched me to a voice mail system. I left the following voice mail message on Friday, July 11 at about 09:15 ET:

Chairman Conyers:

Please invoke your power of inherent contempt to forcibly bring Bush Administration officials before your committee to answer the questions of its members.

The matters of inquiry contained in Representative Kucinich's articles of impeachment are many and very substantive. They are of grave importance to our republic.

Mark Venzke
citizen of the United States Of America

P. S. Thank you, David Swanson, for all that you have done for our nation and for all that you continue doing for it.

Friends and Allies:

Following is the e-mail message that I sent to Chairman Conyers at his e-mail addresses, JohnConyersJr@gmail.com and John.Conyers@mail.house.gov, on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 09:46 ET:

Chairman Conyers:

Nothing less than the preservation of accountable, representative democracy requires that you invoke your power of inherent contempt against all U. S. government officials who have ignored the subpoenas that your committee has issued.

The matters addressed in Congressman Kucinich's articles of impeachment and in you own book are of grave importance to our nation.

Have integrity, take courage and act swiftly! Direct the Sargeant At Arms of the U. S. House Of Representatives to take custody of Carl Rove and others who have ignored subpoenas and bring them before your committee.

Mark Venzke

Here is a copy of the email i sent to Congressman Conyers
I teach my students that the President is not above the law. Karl Rove is not either so he should not be allowed to ignore subpoenas.
Please invoke your power of inherent contempt to forcibly bring Bush Administration officials before your committee to answer the questions of its members.

The articles of impeachment are very well written and contain serious charges that should not be ignored.
Allow Kucinich to present Impeachment articles to the House Judiciary Committee.

"Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity."
i called today
All he said was "thank you ill pass that along to the chair."
I do not understand, will never understand, why this Congress has allowed this Executive branch the blank check to continue W's war as well as disregard checks and balances, bill of rights etc. Bush and Cheney, Karl Rove they ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW, CONSTITUTION. Dennis is brave enough to speak the truth and the media ignores or makes fun of him?

I called this morning (7/11) asking that Kucinich's request to present to the judiciary committee be granted. The representative said he would pass the message on to Conyers.

I called approximately one hour ago. It's five thirty in florida and the aide (forgot his name darnit) said that he would be happy to pass the message along and asked if I were willing to leave my name and #. (OF COURSE!!!! but I'm sure you have it on record LMAO !)
Left my name and number, told him a joke to make him smile and asked if a lot of people had called. EMPHATIC YES !!!!
LOTS OF US ARE CALLING. KEEP CALLING

Risk! Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices. Do the hardest thing on earth for you. Act for yourself. Face the truth.

Called Nancy's DC office today, the phone just rang and rang, no answer afer more than 20 rings!!! So I called her SF office, and left a message saying that I want both Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney impeached, and I want Karl Rove arrested. I said that I would be arrested for ignoring a subpeona, and Karl Rove does not deserve special treatment.

Every week, Monday,Wednesday and Friday mornigs without fail at 6am[catime]i get on the phone and call conyers office.

Some days i start off by calling him a traitor who will himself windup being tried for war crimes.

Others begin by asking how much dust has accumulated on the file of cheneys impechment articles, and where in his office does he keep them, is it some place prominant?

If someone truly obnoxious answers i ask for them to justify how the good representitive found the spare time to write a book on the very resaons for impeaching the criminals, but yet finds it more important to investigate what the stains on mc guires pants were rather than the bussiness of the day.

This week i was in rare form, this was the first opportunity since their undeserved break so i had been chomping at the bit.

I wanted to know if it was conyers natural position to greet known hostile wittness before his committess prior to their testimony with outrageous comments such as those we we treated to when yoo and axelrod where at the sub-committee hearing.

"I want you to know i come to this hearing giving you both the bennifit of the doubt" was his opening slavo. WTF.......What doubt? And for whose benifit were those statements made?

After been treated with nothing but combatevness, arrogance and hostility in all of their answers over the many hours yoo and axelrod were there, what did conyers do?

He had the audacity to thank them both for thier cooperation and asked if they would come back again. To which axelrod ever defiant told him " you can always supena me again and we can go thru all of this all over again".

Perhaps its the fact he has been in office more than 35 years.
Perhaps he just getting old, tired and as senile as mcsame.

Or worse the real reson i believe that we will never see impeachment happen is because ot the infamous gang of 8.

This long forgotten cabal of insiders withinthe heirachy of our convoluted, crooked twisted government is up to bush's antics up to and way over their collective heads.

Pelosi and Harmon themselves were members at the time that:
illegal wire tapping started taking place prior to 9/11

Had front row seats for the non information was being packaged for sale in the buildup for the war.

Sat thru and watched all the proceedures to be used on POW's that they KNEW to be considered torture.

Knew of the video's that were made of the same torture.

Condoned the continual illegal wiretapping programs even after the "cat was out of the bag".

All members of the Gang of 8, knew every violation the divider was making along the way, sat back and allowed everything to take place without so much as a word.

Hiding behind the cloak of "national security" trumping their oaths to protect the constitution against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC, they just assumed the unity president just would never go so far.

One must remember, each and every time the divider got caught with his pants down around his knobby knees he always made a point of saying, " members of congress at the highest level have been informed at every step of the way"

Well folks, the high members were the gang of 8 and who they were then have now come back to bite them on the butt as to who they have become now.

How would it look for the vaulted positioned Speaker of The House, next in line for the acendency to the very person we are seeking to impeach, should we be able to elliminate old man cheney too, suddenly have her dirty panty hose hung out to dry across the Rotunda?

Why folks, i believe it would be enough to make all of the botox begin to slip and slide out of position and it would nevr do to have Dorean Grey next up into to office now would it?

Or is he already there?

First, read the article linked below. Be sure to read the punchline at the end of the piece.
