Cindy Sheehan's Speech at UFPJ Rally

Ahhhh, I love the smell of Patriotic Dissent in the afternoon!

As we stand here on the grounds of a monument that is dedicated to the Father of our Country, George Washington, we are reminded that he was well known for the apocryphal stories of never being able to tell a lie. I find it so ironic that there is another man here named George who stays in this town between vacations and he seems to never be able to tell the truth. It is tragic for us that o ur bookend presidents named George have two completely different relationships with honesty.

I also find it ironic and heartbreaking that my son, Casey, who was a brave person, tall and proud, who loved his country and was honest beyond measure, could be sent to his death by someone who is even too cowardly to meet with a broken hearted mom, let alone go and fight in the illegal and immoral war of his generation. We are losing our best and our brightest in a country that we are destroying that was no threat to the United States of America. Iraq was and still is no danger to our safety and security, or to our way of life. The weapons of mass destruction and mass deception reside in this town: they are the neocons who pull the strings and the members of Congress who have loosened the purse strings with reckless abandon and have practically given George and company a blank check to run our country into monetary and moral bankruptcy. We are out here in force today to take our country back and restore true democracy and sanity to our political process. The time is now and we are here because we love our country and we won't let the reckless maniacs destroy her any further.

We as a young colony of Great Britain broke from another tyrant, King George the Third. Well, I wish our George the Third were here today to see us out here in force protesting against his war and against his murderous policies. George is not here, though, because he is out galavanting around the country somewhere pretending that he cares about the people who are in the path of hurricane Rita. We know that he cares nothing for the people of America: Katrina, Iraq, and his idiotic response to 9/11 are evidence of that. He is just out and about play-acting like a President whose country is in crisis just like he pretends to be a Commander in Chief and a Cowboy (I wonder if before he took off to Texas or Colorado or wherever he went, he watched a movie like Independence Day to see how that other fake president acted?). The reason he is out today is that his handlers told him that he got a little flak for playing golf and eating birthday cake with Senator Me Cain while some of his employers were hanging off rooftops and treetops in New Orleans. He swaggers around arrogantly like he is a macho dictatorial tyrant who doesn't have to answer to his employers, the people of the United States of America. Those days are over George, we are here today to tell you that we are a majority and we will never rest until you bring our young people home from the Middle East and until you start putting money into rebuilding OUR communities: the ones natural disasters destroy with your help, and the ones which your callous and racist war economy are decimating. We won't allow you to take anymore money out of social programs to finance Halliburton to rebuild the Gulf States: there is no money. Our bank account is empty. George, this is our rainy day and you have failed us miserably. Stop pouring money into the pockets of the war profiteers and into building permanent bases in Iraq . It is time to bring our billions of dollars home from Iraq too!!!

One thing the Camp Casey movement that hunkered down in Crawford, Texas this past August taught us is that we the people of America have the power and we can and should name our national policy and make sure it is carried out. I constantly get asked if we are making a difference and if we think (like we're naïve boobs) that we will actually stop the war. Well, looking back at how Vietnam was ended and looking back in the history of our country, most notably in the suffragette, union, and civil rights movements, we the people are the only ones who have been able to transform history and affect true and lasting change here in America: so to those people who question if we are making a difference: I tell them to go back to school and read their history books!! And another thing these questioners overlook is that WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!! And we are here to tell the media, Congress, and this criminal and criminally negligent administration: WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY!!!

We in the peace movement need to agree on one thing: yes we need an exit plan, but it is not a strategy, it is a command. The command should be: have all of our military personnel and paid killer mercenaries out of Iraq within 6 months and the generals carry out the command. Simple, it's not brain surgery and I think it is so easy even George Bush can sign the order. We can't give the homicidal maniacs any wiggle room or long term strategy sessions. For one thing, when our leaders strategize, we are put in even more jeopardy, they have proven that they are not too bright or even a little compassionate. But the most important thing is that people die everyday in Iraq for absolutely no reason and for lies. We have to say NOW because the people on the other side are saying NEVER. We can't compromise, we can't say please, and we can't retreat. If we do, our country is doomed. We have to honor the sacrifices of our loved ones by completing the mission of peace and justice. It is time. Bring our troops home, NOW!.

Beautiful, Cindy. Absolutely beautiful. You're the voice of millions of us. Tens of millions. We'll all be out there with you today, in spirit and on foot. Unlike King George, we'll never let you down. And we'll bring honor to Casey. We promise you that.

War hurts your own citizens...We are in pain for all the losses Cindy has pointed out...our young dying, our weapons killing innocent civilians, our loss of face around the world...we are not respected...
Thank you for saying the truth...

Nice words... nice to hear George called out in public for the damned fool he is. Go f--- yourself, George, something like that.

Cindy forgot to CALL FOR IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS AGAINST BUSH/CHENEY and the other liars, murderers, and oil company puppets in their Administration. They have not only violated our Constitution, but they have killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent people and thousands of our troops in the Wars for Oil and corporate empire building!

If we want peace, we MUST work for justice! It only takes one Congressperson to introduce Articles of Impeachment; do we have one with the courage and integrity to do it?? The answer appears to be no - I guess Clinton did worse things than Bush...

Thank God we have somebody with the guts to get out there and confront those NEOCONS under GWBush or are they, anyway my thanks to you 100%. It is time, yes folks it is time to replace what we so mistakenly put into office, or was it a mistake, neither here nor there the damage is done, our country has finally joined the rest of the poor nations for that is what we are, and it will get worse if we don't take drastic measures and IMPEACH all, send them packing and good riddance to bad rubbish. It is time we realize we truly are a peace loving nation, not a war mongering bunch of kooks, we the people of AMERICA want peace - send the message to our people still in Iraq and other parts of the world to come home now. God Bless America.

I address your last paragraph. Do we have one Congressman who will introduce Articles of Impeachment; do we have one with the courage and integrity to do it? You are right. The answer is no. There is no Senator, no Congressman, nobody who can do it who will. The Democrats are a party of cowards. I am a Democrat, so I guess I am a coward. But not one, NOT ONE, of our elected Congressman has shown the balls to call Bush what he is -- to wit: mentally challenged, stupid and grossly committed to what HE decrees. We are in mortal danger. If I supported Kerry, which I did, I supported a weakling and an idiot. All of us who hate Bush are cowards because we do not do anything about it that is available to us. We either grow up and take the bull by the horns, or we surrender -- and make no mistake about it--Bush is planning a dictatorship and the demise of our Constitution and individual rights.

What are we going to do?

We are going to make a huge noise! BIG, BIG NOISE! That is what we are going to do. PEOPLE FLOOD THE MEDIA! PEOPLE FLOOD YOUR REPS. MAKE OUR GOVERNMENT KNOW WE ARE PISSED! WE ARE PISSED! KATRINA, THE GULF WAR, PISSED

I was one of the millions of faceless Marine grunts in Vietnam. Believe me when I say that the vast majority of us did not hate or belittle those in the anti-war movement. We wanted to come home damn near as much as the Vietnamese wanted us to go.

To Cindy and the hundreds of thousands of Americans that are finally standing up to the criminals and cowards soiling our highest offices I say, from the deepest part of my heart, "Thanks!"

What you say was true back then, and is just as true today, in Iraq and Afghanistan!

Thank you for your service to our country, John. We all have friends and family that served in NAM and we care. I protested that war and protest the Iraq war, only wishing our leaders would have learned from Nam...Oh, that's right, none of them served! No More Politicians' wars...

A powerful blistering speech, Cindy, full of heart and Truth. Thank you for being our voice. You give me hope.

Amen! A "powerful and blistering speech" indeed and every word needed to be said. Come on America........WAKE UP!

Mazel Tov?

I agree with cindy Sheehan.. Can we really expect G.W.Bush to tell the truth. He may have the mentalitty, but his devotion to the corporate trust, his greed ,power lust ,& selfish interests won't allow him to do whats right...then we have the Media. Can we expect Fox News ,O'Reilly,Hannity Etc.to really tell the whole truth? They too are manipulated by the Corporate interests.. When is Congress going to represent the American people in lieu of the Corporations & special interests. The integritty level of our President & Congress is the lowest in American History!

Thanks so much for being there CINDY.I'm a veteran of the last illegal war and you have my heart and full support. Thanks .

With Hope and Love .Peace
Michael

She shows up

Thank you Cindy for your good and courageous work. Thank you for telling and showing us what it means to value life rather than to lust for power.

Even if you don't open Bush's eyes, the eyes of many others will be opened by your example and your ideas. If we value human life, then anytime we help even one person, it is a very important thing.

Thank you for SUCH COURAGE!! YES! Let's BRING THOSE BOYS HOME! LET'S DEMAND some good leadership in the White House for a change. I'm not so sure that what Clinton did in office was as bad as what our country and the world are experiencing because of the lack of wisdom and leadership in the White House RIGHT NOW!!

Say on, Cindy, and may PEACE be happening SOON!
M in Illinois

IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING THAT SOMEONE IS COURAGEOUS ENOUGH TO STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT IN THIS COUNTRY. IT'S A SAD THING THAT SOMEONE HAD TO LOSE A LOVED ONE TO GET PEOPLE TO STAND UP FOR WHAT'S RIGHT. I STAND UP FOR YOU CINDY. NO ONE ELSE THOUGHT TO STAND UP UNTIL YOU DID BECAUSE OF FEAR. YOU ARE A TRUE LION HEART AND HOPEFULLY THE PEOPLE OF THIS UNITED STATES STANDS BEHIND YOU. GEORGE BUSH IS NOW INSIGNIFICANT IN THE EYES OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO GOT HIM ELECTED. BUT THE MAN LIED AND HE USED RELIGION TO GET TO WHERE HE IS. LET US USE STRATEGY TO GET HIM OUT OF WHERE HE IS. RIGHT ON CINDY

The headlines from the New York Post, a fascist owned newspaper had "Shock and Awe" the day after we bombed Iraq. How many children, parents and grandparents, huddled in fear of the US bombs dropping on their heads? No body counts there. How can a person calling himself a "compassionate" conservative, cause so many deaths with seemingly indifference? It makes me sad to be the guys wearing "the black hats" an analogy used in Hollywoods' cowboy movies. And now, the lives of the youth of America are being spent. If we're going to have a war, have every member of congress who has a child of fighting age pledge their sons or daughters to fight. Then they can be entitled to "vote" yes for the war. It's easier to say "yes" to war, when you're not sending your own. How can the Senate and the Congress, be so naive as to believe this trumped up intelligence?

If Bush feels so strongly about fighting in Iraq why don't his own daughters go fight? Iraq is an immoral and illegal war. Many more people have to speak out and write their congressmen and women and tell them we want the soldiers home. Bush stole 2 elections then lied to the people and should be impeached.

Yeah, and send his drunken bum nephew (son of the governor of Florida) to Iraq. Get him off of our Texas streets.

Again Cindy showed what a Real Lady is and she is also showing the power the people can have if they stick together and show they are not willing to take any more. The more they try to smear and belittle her, the stronger she becomes as only a coward would want to fight the truth and that is what Cindy represents.

For us not to have a single person to speak out and begin to bring charges says very little for those we have voted for. There are enough of them that will give a lot of lip service and after the smoke is gone, that is about all it was. If they were not willing to do anything after the elections in 2000, 2002 and 2004 you could pretty well bet they would do nothing.

When they went along with the war on Iraq, it showed even more that they were not looking out for the interests of the American People. In esence we are paying them to screw us every time we turn around and it will but get worse.

We now for all intent and purpose have a One Party system and it has turned into a Dictatorship with no responsibility or accountability for its actions or inactions, completely corrupt and incompetent.

What we need in government is people such as Cindy Sheehan but I could not wish any of this mess on her shoulders.Bless you Cindy Sheehan, your son Casey would be proud to know the Warrior that his mother is.

Dear Mrs. Sheehan:

I heard what I hope is a rumor that at the beginning of your protest you blamed Israel for our stand in the Middle East, and , therefore for us being in Iraq.

I would like to know what you DID say!

Please answer

Israel is largely to blame for US role in ME. Israel pushed for the invasion of Iraq. Israel hopes to have a pipeline from Iraq to Israel. Israel is a proxy army for US. Every weapon Israel uses the American taxpayer pays for. Every bulldozer that pushes down a Palestinian home or rips up olive trees and agricultural land US pays for.The bulldozer that murdered Rachel Corrie;we paid for. The illegal settlements that were evacuated because Israel decided it didn't think it was worth losing their soldiers lives to ensure only Jews could bask on Palestinian beaches; US taxpayers will pay 2.2 billion dollars to compensate those thieves for stolen land. Some of those settlers have moved to tents instead of homes offered by Sharon to embarrass him because Israel cannot afford to buy them seaside homes in Israel where they'd have to pay for the view instead of steal it. For the first time in decades Palestinians have been able to go to the beach and touch their toes into the waves. Palestinians were not allowed on the beaches under this occupation. In California all of us get to go to the beach..black white Jew Christian Muslim rich poor. The ocean belongs to all of us...not just a mythical chosen few. And I bet Cindy agrees with me. And if you don't you are either a racist or a Zionist or if you are a Zionist;both.

A very profound understanding of the problems in the ME.

How soon we forget. Do you long for a return to the "peace and order" of Saddam's regime?

http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com/2005/08/message-to-cindy-sheehan.html

Shame on you.

Pedro, pull your head out. How can you possibly see what's going on and has been going on so long as you keep it stuck up there? Is it any wonder your views are full of it?

That is a very persuasive argument Colonel.

As far as "seeing what's going on," I do have friends that are currently fighting in Iraq. I routinely read the NY Times, the Washington Post and on-line sources. I listen to the BBC and NPR (granted we know they are not always objective, but at least they are keeping it in the news).

I am not here to defend the administration nor its policies. I want to remind people that there are complexities to this issue. The sound bite mentality of "bring the troops home now" or "Bush lied & people died" is naive. What is it that people truly want? Bring the troops home now? How about transitioning to some sort of self-elected government? How about taking actions to prevent a full scale civil war or a Taliban style extremist state?

Or do you prefer that we "Bring our boys home now" and "let 'em sort it out on their own?" Do we cut & run and let ANOTHER million Iraqis die? Well, I guess they are not Americans, so who really cares? It worked for us while a million Rwandans died. It is working now as God only knows how may Sudanese die.

"Bring 'em home now" and damn the consequences?

We know that there will be problems in bringing the troops home. The world may look at the UNITED STATES differently. We have always been a humanist country but since Bush every thing has gone to hell.We will have to make decisions. The president is not the country. The government is the people and we are deciding that he is not doing the job we have asked for.We will be able to do this and it will fall into place. This is the most corrupt government that we have ever had and we are at fault for allowing it to slip past our non seeing eyes. We are a nation awakened! Do not mess with a nation awakened!

"We have always been a humanist country but since Bush every thing has gone to hell.We will have to make decisions."

Humanist country?

http://www.americanhumanist.org/3/HumandItsAspirations.php

"We are a nation awakened! Do not mess with a nation awakened!"

To what are you referring?

Do not mess with us or we will bring our troops home now and leave your country in a shambles?

Do not mess with us or we will allow genocides in African countries to occur without interference?

Do not mess with us or we will elect more career politicians into office? (but this time more of them will have a D after their name)

Bush likes to say "As they stand up, we'll stand down". I say "as we stand down, they will stand up".
Bush thumbed his nose at the international community when he started this war. He made it clear he would proceed with his plans with or without them. His arrogance was offensive and blatant. Now he is failing and I am sure there are many in the international community who are enjoying his failure because of his arrogance. And I am sure there are other countries, who do not enjoy his failure but just shake their heads and say "I told you so". But the international community is not stupid and they recognize the importance of having a secure Iraq. If Bush is impeached and our armed forces "stand down", if financial control and military control is in the hands of an international force, then we will see peace in Iraq. Bush's war is creating more terrorists every day. If Bush was out of the picture, the international community would "stand up". Enough boots on the ground would be provided to secure the borders and Iraqis would be able to take back their country. Until that happens we are part of the problem, not the solution.

"If Bush was out of the picture, the international community would 'stand up.' Enough boots on the ground would be provided to secure the borders and Iraqis would be able to take back their country."

And you base this on...

Will this be a UN Task force? A multi-national consortium? How come we haven't heard this groundswell of "if Bush is out, we are in" in the international community?

I am all for an international coalition to "take over for the US." It would be fan-freaking-tastic. I can see it now, the terrorist lay down their arms because there are "blue helmets" on the troops. Sign me up for this plan!

Many in the Iraq govt are asking us to leave. The way to do this is to sit down with them NOW and make an exit plan. The UN could be asked to take over for us. We could end up leaving a smaller force to help in one part of the country, perhaps, but on a requested basis, while other nations help elsewhere.

Bush lied and continues to lie. He claims to be a Christian, but he's not. He has no respect for many of the commandments, starting with the commandment not to lie.

GW says the "enemies" in Iraq would expoit our having a timetable. It's not true. If they did stop till we were out, the peace would give the Iraqis even more opportunity to prepare for our withdrawal.

"He swaggers around arrogantly like he is a macho dictatorial tyrant..."

Have you forgotten already?

Do you long for the "peace and order" of Saddam's regime?

Shame on you.

No, shame on you!

Let's not forget who supported Saddam's regime in the first place: the United States! Remember, WE gave him financial and military support during the Iran-Iraq War. And we looked away when he used chemical weapons on the Kurds.

Cindy Sheehan is right. Get U.S. out of Iraq now.

And you need to study your history.

ARE YOU NUTS?? Or what? What part of there were no weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein was NO THREAT TO THE UNITED STATES do you not comprehend? Besides he--or one of his look alikes-- was captured YEARS AGO. Why are we still in Iraq?? what is your point?? George W. Bush hid from doing what he sends our children to do now when he was called to serve this country in Vietnam. What do you think gives a cowardly little tiny swaggering man with a short man complex with not one whit of compassion or humanity in his pathetically muddled psyche and who blatantly gives huge monetary tax breaks to the wealthiest of the people in America, bankrupts our country spending $5 Billion a month in Iraq to his and Cheney's Halliburton cronies but not on our soldiers plus the occasional extra $87Billion he throws to vultures profiteering on war and death and destruction. We have no business in Iraq telling them how to run their government. Terrorists are not an issue here unless you are referring to the one in the White House of course. Terrorists, though, FYI: Do not have any affiliation with or loyalty to ANY country --hence the London bombings along with a host of other terrorist attacks around the globe as our children die in Iraq. There is no way to justify a "war on terror" that launches an unprovoked attack on any country. It is stupid to try to. Every one of these stupid statements trying to pass as legitimate arguments to support George W. Bush's evil acts against this country and every one of us here are just that: stupid. Let's attack Australia in our war against terror, ok? Oh, that's right --- no oil!! Get a clue. Stop and think your own thoughts for a change instead of parroting Rush Limbaugh's insane rants.

For every one of you who won't think and who keep making asinine statements like this one I hope you realize that you are the ones who are not supporting the troops or America AT ALL. You are the problem here. If you want to live under a fascist dictator go to Cuba but you leave this country alone. We have civil rights, we are a democracy, we are free individuals and we don't need traitors screwing things up in this country. Love it or leave it.

Most of the American public voices your truth. Today the prowar rally had 400 strong, compared to 300,000, unreported in the media anti war protestors. I think we need to get a bit uppity with the media and BOYCOTT!

Then YOU go over there and fight, and go ahead, take your family with you. All you people who say you support this war are full of hot air.

Dear anonymous,

I served 8 years in the Marine Corps and went wherever I was ordered to go. This is similar to all of our proud military men and women who serve our great country. I honor their service and dedication. Mrs. Sheehan's son was an adult man of sound mind. He reenlisted to continue his service to his country and to support his brothers and sisters in arms. He knew full well that he would be returning to Iraq. I honor his service, his life and all who have been killed in service to their country.

You seem to have forgotten that Saddam was a good buddy of the Reagan White House. In fact, take a look at the photo of Don Rummsfeld warmly shaking hands with Saddam after giving him ingredients for WMD's. The real reason we attacked Iraq can be found in the statements of the Project for the New American Century. It had nothing to do with Saddam and everything to do with the U.S. gaining more more military, and economic( yes, OIL) control in the Middle East. An innocent Iraqi murdered by a U.S. bomb or soldier is just as dead as one murdered by Saddam.

Our involvement in Iraq and the entire middle east in general since the end of World War II has brought the civilian populations of the middle east a lot of misery while making a very select few wealthier than the GNP of most small countries. We forget this when we're prattling on about 'they attacked us first' and 'they want us dead.'

Terrorism didn't bother us in the first 20 years after WWII because the lack of money and technology made it less dangerous to us. In a sense, we've not only given them a reason to resent us, we've armed and funded them as well.

Your point about Saddam is well taken. When it comes to the ME, we are our own worst enemy but Bush's supporters just cover their ears and shriek 'never forget' even louder.

Yes, At least his people and ours were not dying from an illegal invasion that the US caused and is responsible for. The entire region is unstable and a civil war is imminent which will cause even more deaths and suffering. The US gave Saddam that power and armed him and encouraged all his aggressive actions EVEN the invasion of Kuwait.
The deaths and suffering in Iraq have not only hurt huge numbers of people but have caused many people from other countries to not only lose respect for the US and its people but they are willing to die because of US arrogance and kill themselves and others.Bush has not made a damn thing better. He is a pin head and is endangering US and the entire world with his imperialistic endeavors and his ignorance of the consequences of global warming. He needs to go..Now. The world cannot wait.

Saddam would have never allowed Al Qaeda opperatives to operate freely in Iraq. He was a committed secularist, hated by Bin Laden and the other Islamic fundamentalists. We did the real terrorists a great favor in getting rid of him. Now, because of the neo-con stupidity, the entire region will descend into chaos. So much for 'freedom on the march'.

Wow, it almost sounds like you DO long for the good old days of the Saddam regime. How does it go - "at least the trains ran on time," or in this case - "Saddam would have never allowed Al Qaeda operatives to operate freely in Iraq."

Yes, the US government supported Saddam throughout the Iran-Iraq war. I did not support that policy. I did not support the slaughter of Kurds or anyone whom Saddam decided to torture, rape and kill (close to one million, unless you get your facts from Molly Ivins).

I didn't support Clinton's denial of the genocide in Rwanda. Just as I don't support our current administrations blind eye to the ongoing genocide in Darfur.

I don't listen to Rush and I am not here to apologize for the administration.

Please let's not wax poetic about Iraq in the "good old days."

This is about 14 permanent american military bases in Iraq. Question why do we not have military bases in the Sudan? Why do we not have military bases in North Korea? This is about PNAC! Have you read about it? OIL, OIL, OIL!

Please, let's at least get our facts straight. No oil in Sudan? Surely you are joking. The oil in Sudan (or rather the Chinese & French reliance on it) is the reason the UN Security council won't deal honestly with the on-going genocide in Darfur.

http://www.mbendi.co.za/indy/oilg/af/su/p0005.htm
http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2005/022005/02122005/1664733
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3875277.stm

So, there IS oil in Sudan, can we step in and stop the genocide now?
No, I am sure the UN will take care of it.
