Senator McCain, Meet General Casey

By Larry Johnson

Want further proof that John McCain is living in an alternate universe when it comes to Iraq? Check out this exchange on Iraq in tonight’s debate:

Did you catch McCain’s key quip? “I know of no military leader, including General Petraeus, who says we can’t sustain our effort in Iraq.” Oh really?

Well, maybe Senator McCain was taking a nap last month, but Army Chief of Staff, General Casey disagrees. The Christian Science Monitor’s Gordon Lubold reported the following last Christmas Eve:

“We’re deploying at unsustainable rates,” General Casey said three weeks ago during remarks to an audience at the Brookings Institution in Washington. The Army agreed to a buildup of troops a year ago with the understanding that it was temporary, he said. “We can’t sustain that. We have to come off of that, and we’re working that very hard.”

In fact, Casey is not alone. Lubold also wrote:

While there is reasonable consensus that a significant drawdown must occur to relieve the Army – from Gates to Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the service chiefs and many combatant commanders – Petraeus may not see things the same way. An expert in counterinsurgency, Petraeus believes such campaigns can last a decade or more if done right. While he is mindful of the strains on the force, he is considered to be more focused on maintaining the security momentum there, analysts say.

So what did media stars Tim Russert and Brian Williams do? Nothing. They did a fair impression of a bobble head doll. Each happily nodding along as McCain spun his fantasy. Not one person tonight dared challenge John McCain on this point–something that was demonstrably false–even in the post-debate wrap up. Although McCain was a brave Navy pilot, it is equally clear he is now an addled old man who lacks the mental acuity to be a competent President. But with our “crack” TV media stars on patrol, they’ll just humor him and let him skate until he actually gets the job and can do some real damage. And at that point the joke will be on us. Thank God (irony intended) for the Christian Science Monitor. Too bad more folks don’t read it. Perhaps McCain might like a subscription.

How far they fall.

For me, any and all doubt that John McCain had sold out his great American legacy for the lure of sweet special interest cash was erased when the Pretender-in-Chief signed McCain's anti-torture bill, added a signing statement claiming the non-existent authority to ignore it at his own discretion, and John McCain was silent.

This is the same guy who spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, being tortured the entire time.

The same guy who built a great following in the 2000 presidential campaign by railing against special interests.

The same guy who was viciously, personally, falsely trashed into submission by Bushco in that 2000 campaign, only to kiss the ass of the crime syndicate that smeared him.

In days gone by, John McCain might have been worthy of the presidency. No longer. Not by a long shot.

John, I wonder if he duped us in 2000, and he was just the "back-up" Neocon? :(

Hmmm, aren't "Crime Syndicates" traditionally "Family" Oriented, kidz? . . .;-)

My grandma always told me that "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" . . .;-)

(clipped headline and article)
"Rockets, Napalm, Torpedoes & Lies -Israel's Attack on the USS Liberty, Revisited - On June 6, (1967) the Joint Chiefs sent Admiral McCain, father of the senator from Arizona, an urgent message instructing him to move the Liberty out of the war zone to a position at least 100 miles off the Gaza Coast. McCain never forwarded the message to the ship. . . .

. . .. 'No one came to help us,' said Dr. Richard F. Kiepfer, the Liberty's physician. .We were promised help, but no help came. The Russians arrived before our own ships did. We asked for an escort before we ever came to the war zone and we were turned down.'

None of this made its way into the 700-page Court of Inquiry report, which was completed within a couple of weeks and sent to Admiral McCain in London for review.

McCain approved the report over the objections of Captain Merlin Staring, the Navy legal officer assigned to the inquiry, who found the report to be flawed, incomplete and contrary to the evidence. . . .

. . .But the book wasn't closed for the sailors either, of course. After a Newsweek story exposed the gist of what really happened on that day in the Mediterranean, an enraged Admiral McCain placed all the sailors under a gag order. When one sailor told an officer that he was having problems living with the cover-up, he was told: 'Forget about it, that's an order.'"

"Back-up Neocon", indeed, kidz . . .;-)

"Lashing ropes and smashing timbers
Flashing heat rays pierce the deck
Dashing hopes for our deliverence
As we watched the sinking wreck!
With the smoke of battle clearing
As degrading waves defiled
Slowly dissapearing
Farewell Thunderchild
Slowly dissapearing
Farewell Thunderchild!"
- Thunderchild from Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds

Wow, I met one of the USS Liberty survivors... he tells it straight ...Israeli pilots knew they were attacking American ship. The problem is , they didn't kill ALL the American sailors, and the survivors talk now . So McCain Sr is the monster that gagged them?! Geesh, that's repulsive!

Read it again . . . sounds like Admiral McCain set them up . . .

Gag orders may be monstrous . . .but sacrificing U.S. Military Personel LIVES for the benefit of a Foreign Power . . .

. . . that's just good family "bizzness" . . syndicate style . .

When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his Ministers

Held a generals rank

Sorry I did not note that up front on prior post. I was just trying to get the word out that the sailors are ungagged, by the authority of THEMSELVES ! :o)

But the Congress participated in the cover-up, as it always does, the same as with 9ll. They don't want to know the truth because it is very bad news -- they'll sacrifice the sailors and the civilians instead.

As for McCain, I fear the torture he experienced was not enough to give him empathy for the tortured of Iraq. Maybe he was just giving us a bunch of BS about his torture. Apparently he learned nothing.
