CHARLESTON -- About 40 opponents of the war in Iraq, some coming from as far as Redmond and Eugene, held a peace rally at Sunset Beach on Sunday, the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"We need to bring home our troops, definitely," said Lori Warren, a spokesperson for a long distance phone service from Redmond who grew up in Charleston, as she helped set up sound equipment just before noon.

The crowd of mostly twenty-somethings filled a clearing between a parking lot and the beach with trees on one side and the Sunset Bay State Park's restrooms on the other.

"We think it's time the country did something to stop what's going on," said Ron Looby, a North Bend potter who heard about the rally on a public radio station.

Introduced with John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance," rally organizer Brandi Weatherston, a Charleston bartender and single mother, summed up the sentiments of the crowd as she lead off a series of speakers.

"If you're not outraged at what's going on, you're not paying attention," Weatherston said, asserting that the war in Iraq is drawing money and attention from other pressing issues.

"We haven't got enough money for schools, but we're spending it on a war," Weatherston continued. "Medicare and other issues have fallen by the wayside."

Weatherston made a pitch for using the rally as a starting point for an ongoing effort.

"This is a beginning, getting people together to see what we should do," she said. "We need to send a message to the Bush Administration that this will not be tolerated any more."

After moments of silence for victims of the Sept. 11 attack, soldiers killed in Iraq and Iraqi casualties, Weatherston continued hammering at the Bush Administration.

"Saddam Hussein is out of power, but Osama bin Laden -- the person really responsible for Sept. 11 -- is still free," Weatherston noted.

"We're playing right into the hands of al-Qaida, fueling their hate," she said. "They want us to believe we have to get them before they get us, but it's simply not true."

Looby followed Weatherston with a call to pressure senators and representatives.

"I think it's important that you call your representatives every week," said Looby. "Do the little things, and we can make a difference -- we need to stand up."

Roxanne Goetz said she didn't think supporting the war was necessarily patriotic.

"I support our troops, but I don't support Bush," Goetz said, adding she didn't think deaths caused by the war in Iraq are something to celebrate. "That doesn't make me proud to be an American."

Colleen Certo described a recent conversation with a war veteran at the Tioga Hotel while waiting for a Greyhound bus in the parking lot.

"He had been in Korea and Vietnam, so I asked him what he thought of the war in Iraq," recalled Certo. "He shrugged his shoulders and said, 'Another Vietnam.'"
