My Virgin Eyes!!

Just like Iraq, the Bush Administration was wholly unprepared for the fury of Katrina and its aftermath.

Just like Iraq, the Bush Administration is backed into a corner, as their incompetence and indifference is coming back to slap them in the face.

And just like Iraq, they're planning on hiding it from you.

FEMA Wants No Photos of Dead

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. agency leading Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts said Tuesday that it does not want the news media to photograph the dead as they are recovered.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected journalists' requests to accompany rescue boats searching for storm victims.

An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats.

"We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

Because in Bush's America, even when Americans are killed, they're not killed.

Although I'm sure this is all about protecting me from troubling pictures, and has nothing to do with conveying a positive image.

Oh wait, it is.

Not showing the magnitude of the lives lost will result in helping the Bush administration cover up the fact that their actions or in-actions has consequences. Bush has also tried to cover up our war dead in the same way. In the meantime, the Bush spin machine is in full motion, and Fox News and CNN are ready to deliver the slant. So far, the Bush machine has silenced the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisiana by media shut out. We should hear from a few selected Republicans -- Tom DeLay and Bill Frist -- as to why the Mayor and the Governor is the blame for the incompetence in New Orleans. Well guess what? We are suckers no more; the American public has seen this before and its called "The Rove Doctrine."

It means, "Let the dead teach the living."

So writes Wlliam Rivers Pitt in an article for Truthout.org. Here's a brief extract:

An edict has come down from the federal government banning press photographers from taking any pictures of the dead as they lay waiting for removal. Echoes of the ban on photographs of American soldiers in flag-draped caskets returned from Iraq are present, as are echoes of a ban on the new photos taken from within Abu Ghraib. Perhaps, it is thought, that if the American people cannot see death, they will come to believe it does not exist.

... Mortui Vivis Praecipant. What have the dead taught the living in the last two weeks? We have learned that priorities matter. We have learned that the conservative small-government model is a recipe for catastrophe. We have learned that government is sure to absolutely fail its citizens when it is run by people who hate government. We have learned that massive budget cuts and agency downsizing are not theoretical or political exercises. Before Katrina, we were learning that an irresponsible and unnecessary war in Iraq was making us less safe at home. After Katrina, we have learned exactly how unsafe we are as four years of tough talk about defending the nation has been exposed by the wind and the rain. We have learned that leadership matters, and that the absence of leadership is deadly.
