Report says war on terror is fuelling al Qaeda

By Kate Kelland, Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Six years after the September 11 attacks in the United States, the "war on terror" is failing and instead fuelling an increase in support for extremist Islamist movements, a British think-tank said on Monday.

A report by the Oxford Research Group (ORG) said a "fundamental re-think is required" if the global terrorist network is to be rendered ineffective.

"If the al Qaeda movement is to be countered, then the roots of its support must be understood and systematically undercut," said Paul Rogers, the report's author and professor of global peace studies at Bradford University in northern England.

"Combined with conventional policing and security measures, al Qaeda can be contained and minimized but this will require a change in policy at every level."

He described the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq as a "disastrous mistake" which had helped establish a "most valued jihadist combat training zone" for al Qaeda supporters.

The report -- Alternatives to the War on Terror -- recommended the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq coupled with intensive diplomatic engagement in the region, including with Iran and Syria.

In Afghanistan, Rogers also called for an immediate scaling down of military activities, an injection of more civil aid and negotiations with militia groups aimed at bringing them into the political process.

If such measures were adopted it would still take "at least 10 years to make up for the mistakes made since 9/11."

"Failure to make the necessary changes could result in the war on terror lasting decades," the report added.

Rogers also warned of a drift toward conflict with Iran.

"Going to war with Iran," he said, "will make matters far worse, playing directly into the hands of extreme elements and adding greatly to the violence across the region. Whatever the problems with Iran, war should be avoided at all costs."

Finally do we begin to realize that Peace is not made with a Sword?

It took the French and British some 300 years of WAR to figure that out, but in the days of Instant History, as recorded in the World of Knowledge on the net, the only excuse for ignorance is ignoring the knowledge itself and Not wanting its fruit... tempting the native in each of us.

Even before I knew 911 was an inside job of neocon creation, I had this idea that if we could spend 50 billion dollars on Military incursions against our "enemies" as a reaction to it, we could more productively dispatch 5 million American Tourists flooding an area with 10 thousand dollars each in their pocket to SPEND...(I called it "Tourists For Terrorists") sort of a mass Insodus (from: exodus) that buys Afghan rugs, or Mesopotamian pottery while befriending the accused culture, keeping OUR airports busy, and inculcating State Department-level integration and REPORTS, whilst the discovery of the originating "criminals" was conducted. Most people laughed me off and after I discovered 911 was an Inside Job, they simply cut off contact.

Well, not so far in the distant future there will be this remnant of truth that no one denies, and that is the unalienable Right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, endowed by our creator and not subject to border, religion, coercion, or wealth, and which guides the nations. Not even the Chinese deny it. The Chinese are spending their "political capital" of communist history/authoritarianism on Slowing the Revolution... They do not deny that they are in a Revolution of unalienable proportion.

I am believing and hoping, praying and inciting the Potential of Human Ideal in an era plagued with monsters of tremendous powers of fire, wealth beyond any reasonable accountancy, religions far past their Duties to Serve, and all seem inimical to Evolution. I no longer care that I offend the self-righteous, self-appointed, self-anointed, self-appropriated powers that be or their offspring. It is time to acknowledge the drudgery of man-to-man compatibility laying before us:

We will get along or die a warrior.

I know there are wars and guns and bombs and tyranny, but they're all going the way of the dinosaur with the millions of those who died in their wake and the cause of their day...

Warriors or Creators, We choose our own.

This article from Reuters is a good report of the reckoning of the harvest sown by the deeds of the warriors who chose for the rest of us what deed was fulfilled in our name, but let them so reap their own harvest, and the rest of us depart their evil genius.
