"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
- Jesus Christ, quoted in John 8:32 of the Bible (New Revised Standard
Do we know the truth? Are we free? Perhaps not.
All-too-frequently President George W. Bush lies, and all-too-often the media
broadcast his every word without question or criticism. For instance, he lied
about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He can parse it any way he likes,
but his casus belli was still a lie. Then he covered his lies with more lies
about how "regime change" would bring liberation and democracy to Iraq. Two
years after that "liberation," the United States military is still occupying
bitterly hostile country which seems to be descending into civil war.
Now, as tragedy and disaster grip Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama,
George W. Bush has lied again. This time, he stood before the press and the
American people and claimed that nobody could have predicted the levee breaks
that followed the category-four Hurricane Katrina. Why is that a lie?
President Bush and his administration possessed solid scientific facts which
forewarned them about the vulnerability of New Orleans if precisely this
ever occurred. Then as recently as last year, he CUT the budget for both the
Army Corps of Engineers and the project to bolster flood-control in that
And he did that despite having seen numerous reports, since 2001, which
him that disaster was imminent because the levees were of insufficient
in impaired condition, around Lake Ponchartraine and the Mississippi River.
Question: If "forewarned is forearmed," why did a forewarned President Bush
then refuse to fund the necessary preventive measures? Answer: He did not
them because he squandered the money when he implemented his massive tax-cuts
combined with massive military expenditures; hence, there were no funds left
secure the Deep South from catastrophic flooding.
WHEN A PRESIDENT LIES TO US, THE CONSEQUENCES ARE GRAVE.
It matters greatly that President George W. Bush lies frequently and easily.
NOW HEAR THIS: WHEN A PRESIDENT LIES, PEOPLE DIE!
Consider these international consequences of George W. Bush's lies:
- In Iraq, more one-hundred thousand innocent women, children, elderly and
disabled people have suffered violent deaths as "collateral damage" from his
unjust, illegal, unnecessary war of choice.
- Nearly two thousand members of the American military have made the ultimate
sacrifice in that war. (And evidence exists to suggest that the military
is actually above nine thousand, but that the Pentagon doesn't count soldiers
suffer serious wounds in Iraq, and then die after departure for military
in Germany and the USA. If true, this clever omission is yet another form of
- More journalists have died in the Iraq War's first two and one-half years
the entire Vietnam War's nineteen years (i.e., from the French commencement
in 1955 to the American withdrawal in 1974).
Now consider these domestic consequences of George W. Bush's lies:
- Many crucial educational, social, and health programs have been left
or badly underfunded because the taxpayers' money was diverted to fund the
illegal war of aggression that he bamboozled us into under false pretenses.
- In Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, mass death has been inflicted on
poorest and most vulnerable people - those who were left behind when the
evacuation alert was sounded.
For a specific example of the latter, John Burnett of National Public Radio
reported from the New Orleans Convention Center about the desperate
situation. Thousands of people were stranded inside the Center without food, water,
electricity, or security. He talked with, and listened to, people who had
instructed to go there, only to find themselves without assistance or aid. He
described the ominous presence of dead bodies inside and outside that
Burnett's eyewitness report led to an on-air argument between Robert Siegel,
the host of NPR’s afternoon news program "All Things Considered," and Michael
Chertoff, the Secretary of Homeland Security. Secretary Chertoff hotly denied
there were people in trouble inside the New Orleans Convention Center. Thank
for Robert Siegel, who defended the accuracy of Burnett's coverage, and who
did not back down from the brashly-lying Chertoff! Thank God for John
insistent and compassionate news reporting, which proved to be highly
This heated on-air exchange between NPR's Siegel and Secretary Chertoff
to expose the truly dire straits in which this nation finds itself. It is
that the agency most directly responsible for our nation's security failed to
acknowledge obvious security flaws, and that its leader - Chertoff - chose to
hard facts that were placed in front of him. It was only because NPR's Siegel
and Burnett challenged Chertoff's lying denials that the people inside the
Center slowly began to get the help they so desperately needed - and should
have received days earlier. It is not difficult to imagine what has happened,
and is still
happening, to thousands of people who are stranded in the more isolated areas.
May God help us all in times of emergency, if we must rely on the dilatory
protection and unaccountable services of the Bush Administration, the
of Homeland Security, and the current Federal Emergency Management Agency!
"WHO'RE YA GONNA BELIEVE - ME, OR YOUR LYING EYES?"
As the facts above demonstrate (and these facts are just the tip of the
the lies of George W. Bush and his appointees have placed this country, and
of the world, in peril. If we include their lying denials about the
scientifically-proven reality of global warming, they've placed the entire planet in
peril. Behold the
temporary fate of New Orleans right now, and realize that low-lying nations
like the Netherlands, and cities like Venice, soon could be drowned underwater
Unfortunately, too many Americans still choose to believe in him and
he says. Some say "It's a faith-based presidency. Why be confused by the
facts?" Others say "I trust him because he's a self-avowed born-again Christian."
their abiding belief in George W. Bush is a classic case of misplaced faith.
The man's behavior, decisions, and orations clearly demonstrate that he
practices a strange, heretofore-unknown form of "Christianity." Scripturally and
it is a new politico-religious faith that bears no resemblance to the life
teachings of Jesus Christ.
BEWARE OF WOLVES IN SHEEPS' CLOTHING!
Jesus Christ instructed his followers to forgive, and even to love, our
George W. Bush talks openly about using war as his means of revenge, and lies
with ease to achieve that bloodthirsty end. Thus, he is far more closely
with those whom Jesus described as the children of a liar and a murderer than
he is with Jesus and his apostles.
Jesus said to his accusers, and to those who were conspiring to kill him:
“You are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil
he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth.
There is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character;
is a liar and the father of lies.
