Katrina takes a toll on Bush

From L K Sharma DH News Service, Washington:

Hurricane Katrina destroyed the lives and livelihood of thousands of poor Americans and has made President Bush vulnerable.

The natural disaster that wiped out a coastal city and was compared by a few Americans to “Hiroshima

The aftermath of the Federal response to Hurricane Katrina makes it abundantly clear that the Bush regime has NO plan to protect the homeland. The loss of life from the wrath of hurricane winds will pale in comparison with the loss of life from a biological terrorist attack. Yet those who hate this nation have learned first hand this past week that the Bush regime has done NOTHING to augment national security. This was the same conclusion reached by the bipartisan Commission on National Security in 2002 when it reported that there was no plan in place to protect our (1) borders, (2) seaports, (3) chemical and nuclear power plants, (4) infrastructure, and (5) national monuments.

American is NOT safe because the criminal malfeasance of George W. Bush continues with each day that he is allowed to remain as the occupant of the Oval Office.

The mainstream media is failing the American people by not reporting on the sad reality that Hurricane Katrina revealed the vulnerabilities of our national security network.

"I understand that the U.S. Forest Service had water-tanker aircraft available to help douse the fires raging on our riverfront, but FEMA has yet to accept the aid. When Amtrak offered trains to evacuate significant numbers of victims – far more efficiently than buses – FEMA again dragged its feet. Offers of medicine, communications equipment and other desperately needed items continue to flow in, only to be ignored by the agency.
"But perhaps the greatest disappointment stands at the breached 17th Street levee. Touring this critical site yesterday with the President, I saw what I believed to be a real and significant effort to get a handle on a major cause of this catastrophe. Flying over this critical spot again this morning, less than 24 hours later, it became apparent that yesterday we witnessed a hastily prepared stage set for a Presidential photo opportunity; and the desperately needed resources we saw were this morning reduced to a single, lonely piece of equipment. The good and decent people of southeast Louisiana and the Gulf Coast – black and white, rich and poor, young and old – deserve far better from their national government.
"Mr. President, I'm imploring you once again to get a cabinet-level official stood up as soon as possible to get this entire operation moving forward regionwide with all the resources – military and otherwise – necessary to relieve the unmitigated suffering and economic damage that is unfolding."

The catastrophe in the Gulf region is highlighting not only a failure of government, but the failure or incompetence of an ideology that is misplaced in a crisis of this scope and magnitude.

Who was it that said they wanted to shrink government so it could be drowned in a bathtub? While not denying that there are excesses related to big government, a natural disaster of the proportion of New Orleans, and the surrounding region, is an occasion that calls for the action and resources of the federal government. Anything less is gross negligence.

You hit that on the nose. Neocons do not believe in social obligation, or common wealth because it chaps their selfish, greedy hides. No nation can exist without sharing responsibility and trusting each other. These moral halfwits are going to destroy our nation.

The colossal failure of the government's reponse to Hurricane Katrina has been clear for all to see, up to this point. Now, in watching the MSM and in hearing the spinning of top officials, the picture is getting murkier. Claims like Michael Chertoff's that the response was "exceptional" or Michael Brown's false statement that the poor people trapped at the convention center had been given one or two meals while in reality no help had been given as of the time of his statement. A timeline of events, politician's statements, logs of rescue workers, media accounts, and other sources needs to be compiled before the truth of the magnitude of the failure of our government is lost to spin and blame-gaming. A side by side comparison of the positive spin coming from politicians vs. the reality of the mounting deaths and destruction is essential for finding what truely went wrong and when. I am sure such a timeline would help us all.

A timeline is just what is needed. I expect someone will be putting one together soon. If anyone knows of one already out there please post the link.

We all need to remember that the news media was able to travel the roads in and out of New Orleans. They were bringing crews and support for the news crews. Where was this unholy government?

That SOB Bush should be physically removed from office!

Here is the letter that I am sending to my Congressional reps:

Dear Senators Santorum and Specter and Representative Hart:

After watching the Weather Channel repeatedly warn of the approach of Hurricane Katrina, I was shocked after the storm hit to read in the news that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson on Sunday, August 28, 2005 had called Louisiana Governor Blanco to offer to send National Guard troops from New Mexico to assist the State of Louisiana. On Thursday, September 1, 2005, permission from Washington was finally given.

Do you recall the day and time that Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf coast? Can you count the number of hours that transpired between the time that New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson called Louisiana Governor Blanco and the time that Washington finally gave permission? Can you count the number of people who died in that time frame? Can you count the number of people who could have been saved had the troops been promptly dispatched?

That failure of the Bush Administration to react promptly to the offer of help from New Mexico to Louisiana is not unique.

On 2005/08/31, the Canadian press reported that Canada was prepared to send aid directly to Louisiana, “after Louisiana officials asked for help.

Thanks Mary for your powerful words. I have every intention of following your lead by sending my Senator, Norm Coleman, Minnesota a similar demand.

Excellent post
i will forward this to my senators and congresswoman
This is exactly what has to happen
these are facts and truth
we are so inundated with lies from bush

They are criminally culpable.
we have to pressure Congress like never before daily
and get friends to do it.
