Appalling Language Can Be Subtle

I was horrified to come across two photos on yahoo's site--one of a black man described as a "looter" and another of two white people described as having "found" bread and soda.

Go here to see the photos:

It is such language that reveals why we are still, 140 years after the Civil War, such a racist and divided country.

How can we possibly heal the rifts after such unconscious and appalling attitudes are revealed?

People who are getting the job done for their families' and their well-being and health, because Bush doesn't know quite what to do or where to go >>> or how to say Gulf Coach yet (yes, he said "coach" this morning > I heard it on an NPR radio report)

How can you criticize Bush for a simple supposed slip of the tongue? That's the most petty thing I've ever seen on here. I heard him too. He didn't say Gulf Coach! He said Golf Coach! He's stopping at Augusta for 9 holes after he flies by the devestation and says something else stupid! Give the guy a break. Haven't you figured out he's an idiot after 5 years?

Peace! Back by popular demand!

OMG!!! What a humorous response. Good to see we can still find a smile in all this. I actually feel guilty enjoying anything til I know our Country and its leadership is doing everything it can for our stricken citizens...Peace to all...

Love is the only thing that is going to make this work. You can't hate if you smile. Yeah, I know, you say GW does it all the time, but that's not really a smile, it's a smirk. A smile comes from the heart, a smirk comes from the bowels. We can only pray that this is the event that unites us again and proves PNAC's priorities are not America's! Racism, politicism, I have no time for these. We must help each other.

Peace,

PJ

I'm idiot for saying you are idiots!!! BUT BUSHIE IS STILL AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!

i hope the snipers save their ammo for when he walks threw the streets of mississippi he has no busisness running our nation.please someone kill this fool now before he hurts our country more.

Hmmm... sounds like the Secret Service should visit you.

BECAUSE IF A SECRET SERVICE AGENT DOES STUMBLE IN HERE AND READS THAT HE MAY TRY TO HAVE HIM TRACKED DOWN THROUGH AFTERDSM.ORGS MAIN FRAME PROCESSOR WHERE THEY THEN CAN TRACK HIM DOWN.**HUMPHREY**

You are correct but racism cuts both ways.

The white British students trapped in the convention center were subject to appalling racial abuse and were so frightened they had to form a circle with the girls in the centre surrounded by the boys.

These are young UK students who had been working the summer in the US summer Camps for American school kids and disabled children.

This was actual racial abuse with real threats of physical violence and rape and not just the use of biased reporting in the press.

So 'Karendc' how about some moral indignation over this! Or is racism a one way street with you?

Not at all. Racism does cut all ways, emphasis on the CUT.

But the people at yahoo need to develop a little consciousness, IMO. The readership may not all be as insightful as the people who found both the photos.

And that is precisely the kind of media messaging that contributes to the situation you describe. It doesn't cause it, mind you, but it does contribute to it.

Dear Karendc,

Thankyou for taking the time to reply.

I agree with you but it is disappointing that you only focus on a single, non violent, incident of racial bias in an internet news report when there are much more terrifying, physical forms of racism going on at ground level.

I believe we need to be as willing to call out racism in the black community as we are in the white community.

Otherwise people will see it for what it is - just a meaningless stick with which to hit one segment of society over the head.

Pointing out that hate exists is fine but if we are to move forward we have to recognise that it is universal in its manifestations.

Once we acknowledge this truth we can move on to helping each other instead of vilifying each other.

Those pics are great! It just goes to show how stupid we can be. We're going to shoot to kill looters taking food and Pepsi. Zero tolerance for people wanting to survive per GW Bushit. I guess we should just let that food rot in the stores instead of taking it for friends and family. I guess all the shoes and clothing that's wet and is going to written off as insurance losses should remain in the store's also so they can be burned after New Orleans is cleaned up instead of given to people who chopped their way through their roof and only have the clothes on their back.

Now as for the plasma televisions, I do have problem with that, especially since there's not much electricity to go around. However, If anyone get's shot for taking food or clothing without violence, then let the shooter pay the consequences. The U.S. is not a police state yet, I hope.

Please, those pictures demonstrate just how sick we are, yes in both directions, but don't give into those feelings.

Peace and Love,
PJ

Racism is bad no matter when, no matter where. However, I for one had no idea of the incident you talk about, involving the young UK students. (Please keep in mind that I subscribe to no newspapers, do not watch tv, I do read news on the internet). If I had been there, you can be sure I would have been right in the faces of those making the threats. If you are British, I apologize to you for the acts of a few. But please do not continue the lack of love by attacking those who had nothing to do with it.

You can find a copy of the news report on this very site below this article.

I do not doubt Alessandra that had you been there that you would have stood up for these kids.

However I was not aware that I was attacking anyone.

Questions of racism in hurricane photo captions; Yahoo responds
RAW STORY

A French news agency has yanked a photograph surrounding the New Orleans hurricane that raised questions of racism, RAW STORY has learned.

The photograph by Agence France Presse shows two white hurricane survivors carrying food as they wade through flood waters. The caption reads, "Two residents wade through chest-deep water after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store after Hurricane Katrina came through the area in New Orleans, Louisiana."

The second, by the Associated Press, shows a black man, who also carries food. The caption reads, "A young man walks through chest deep flood water after looting a grocery store in New Orleans on Tuesday, Aug. 30 2005. Flood waters continue to rise in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina did extensive damage..."

Critics, including Salon.com, focused on the words "finding" and "looting."

In a statement, Yahoo News says AFP asked them to pull the photos, and they have complied: "Since the controversy began, the supplier of one of the photos – AFP – has asked all its clients to remove the photo from their databases. Yahoo! News has complied with the AFP request."

Some, defending the captions, note that the photographs are from two separate agencies, and say that they are not necessarily racist in nature.

YAHOO NEWS STATEMENT:

To Yahoo! News readers:

News photos are an especially popular section of Yahoo! News. In part, this is because we present thousands of news photos from some of the leading news services, including The Associated Press, Reuters, and Agence France Press. To make this volume of photos available in a timely manner, we present the photos and their captions as written, edited and distributed by the news services with no additional editing at Yahoo! News.

In recent days, a number of readers of Yahoo! News have commented on differences in the language in two Hurricane Katrina-related photo captions (from two news services). Since the controversy began, the supplier of one of the photos – AFP – has asked all its clients to remove the photo from their databases. Yahoo! News has complied with the AFP request.

Yahoo! News regrets that these photos and captions, viewed together, may have suggested a racial bias on our part. We remain committed to bringing our readers the full collection of photos as transmitted by our wire service partners.

Apalling language can be subtle

Apalling actions can kill you.

Sticks and stones will break my bones but words...?

not exactly subtle, either.
