The 'Unvarnished Truth' awards are designed to recognize and honor the paths and works of individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage and committment to speaking their truth on political and/or social issues of the day. Individuals who despite the controversy or adversity their opinion might render, they nonetheless dared to tread. This is the 'First Annual Unvarnished Truth Awards' so these individuals are setting the standard for those to come...and they've set the bar pretty high.
Amy Goodman: Popular Host of Democracy Now !, award winning journalist for reporting in East Timor, revered by Heads of State, Congressmembers and thousands of grassroots activists who flock to her speeches like she's a rock star. Recently asked the Pulitzer Committee to strip the New York Times and it's reporter of its' prize granted for coverage of the atomic bomb. Career long committment to digging up the truth and practically coined the phrase..'speaking truth to power.' Author of 'The Exeception to the Rulers.'
Damu Smith: Founder of Black Voices For Peace and the National Black Environmental Justice Network is highly praised and widely regarded for his selflless devotion to fighting the good fight against racism, oppression, environmental injustice and random violence in our communities and around the world. He has educated and motivated communities of color to speak out against the Iraq war. Having been diagnosed this year stage four colon rectal cancer, he has transformed his personal challenge into a national campaign to fight for equality in healthcare.
Micheal Eric Dyson: Professor, minister, prolific writer who has been a bold and articulate voice for the younger sometimes misunderstood, often maligned generation of youth of color. Dyson has written extensively about the African American experience in his books including 'Between God and Gangsta Rap' 'Race Rules:Navigating the Color Line,"Why I Love Black Women and his latest, " Is Bill Cosby Right : Or Has The Black Middleclass Lost It's Mind." He has become a pre-eminent spokesman for the hip hop generation but is admired and applauded across the board.
Cindy Sheehan: Known as 'the spark that ignited the anti-war movement', Cindy has channeled her loss and grief for the death of her soldier son Casey, killed in the war in Iraq into an international movement to end the bloody, costly U.S. invasion of Iraq. Through true grit and sheer determination she has put the Bush administration on notice that America has grown fed up with his lies and false patriotism. She has inspired thousands who have flocked to the impromptu Camps Casey One and Two while still others have set up symbolic camps in their cities upon occasion.
