All that sacrifice for nothing in Iraq

New York Daily News
Denis Hamill

Except for the final body count, the war in Iraq is over.

We lost.

Islam won. Islam won when it was codified into the new constitution as the guiding North Star of Iraq's future.

This was not startling. After we righteously stormed into Afghanistan and kicked some butt, we abandoned the search for Osama Bin Laden, who killed those 2,700 people in downtown Manhattan, for a bait-and-switch invasion of Iraq.

We then turned Afghanistan over to the murderous warlords and opium merchants - whose product probably wound up in the veins of Mellie Carballo and Maria Pesantez, the two coeds who OD'd on heroin a few weeks back on the lower East Side - and declared it a victory for liberal democracy.

And now it is heartbreaking that 1,800 beautiful Americans have died and more than $200 billion in American taxpayer treasure spent so that we could transform the secular totalitarian fascist state of Iraq that had nothing, zero, to do with 9/11, into an Islamic theocracy.

Give it maybe three years after we pull the last troops out - which will start before the 2006 elections for obvious political reasons - and Iraq will be Iran. Ayatollahs will rule. Civil war will rock this sandy asylum. Women will be suppressed. The courts will make decisions based on sharia, Islamic law.

Somehow I don't see the Stones playing Baghdad on the next tour.

I take no liberal-weenie glee in the failure of this war. I believe that Islamo-fascism is the greatest threat to mankind in the 21st century. But an open, transparent democracy cannot start a war on radical Islam based on lies and deceptions. The war was prosecuted with too few troops, no after-plan, and a pathologically stubborn Bush policy of "stay the course" while we sped toward an iceberg in the desert.

And now staying the course has forged us an Islamic state.

In July, I spent a morning in Breezy Point, Queens, with a bunch of Iraq warvets who had lost limbs in that awful war. One guy who'd lost two legs and anarm still had the guts to fasten himself into a harness and zoom through Jamaica Bay. He believed he made his sacrifices for America. Turns out he gave three limbs to create a constitution that celebrates Islam.

I met another vet who was the very first of 15,000 maimed in the war, a brave, patriotic kid from Texas who had a leg blown off in a land mine on the roll into Baghdad. I sat with another legless vet whose 12-year-old-son sat beside him, a little dazed. That kid lost those legs in Iraq, too, for his old man would never shag a fly ball that kid hit into a summer sky.

This new Islamic Iraq constitution dishonors their sacrifice.

Last spring, I received an E-mail from a childhood pal, a Brooklyn bus driver, who at age 54 and with six grandkids, was activated by the reserves and sent to Iraq. He didn't sacrifice a year of his middle age to create an Islamic state. I received another E-mail the other day from a soldier from the Bronx serving with the 101st Airborne who ached to be with his wife, who was seven months pregnant. By the time his baby is born, Iraq will probably have voted to approve the Islamic constitution.

None of them could have imagined when they went to Iraq that what they sacrificed - limbs, dead buddies, irretrievable time away from loved ones - was offered so that Ahmed Chalabi, who while on the CIA payroll fed us all that BS about WMD, could get richer as the new oil minister of Iraq. So that Moqtada al-Sadr, the radical Shiite cleric whose militia is suspected in the recent execution of a New York freelancer named Steven Vincent, could become a major player in the new "democratic" Iraq assembly.

A soldier named Casey Sheehan, who was killed in a 2004 ambush by al-Sadr's militia in Sadr City, certainly didn't die for that.

That's why Cindy Sheehan helped turn the tide of this war that has become President Bush's Vietnam quagmire. When Cindy Sheehan showed up in Crawford, Tex., where Bush cleared brush on the ranch, she synthesized the collective grief of a Gold Star Motherland.

Cindy Sheehan became every funeral George W. Bush did not attend. She was every flag-draped coffin that this administration did not allow us to see. Standing in the dust under a blistering sun, she was the legacy of this dirty little war in microcosm, a mother who had lost a son for NOTHING.

Unless you want to call the creation of an Iraqi Islamic state a victory.

Hey, they secured the oil and established new military bases, didn't they. Do you really think all that "shock and awe" stuff had something to do with enhancing Iraq's constitutional protections for its people? Don't be silly.

Historians are going to be scratching their heads over this "noble cause" for centuries to come.

The neocons who control Bush planned the war long before 9/11 to take possession of Iraq's oil and to start down the road of dismembering Israel's enemies beginning with Iraq and continuing on to Syria and Iran. Even today, Israel's lobbyists in the US government and numerous think tanks are pushing Bush to more American soldiers take on Syria and Iran, while year after year, for over thirty years, American taxpayers have pumped billions of dollars into Israel so that they can take over more Palestinian land. That's what 1881 US soldiers have died for, not for the capture and destruction of WMD, and certainly not for the "feel good" objective of creating democracy in the Islamic world.

It is so sad what the people of American have sacrificed "for" Iraq. I wonder why we did not ask the Iraqi people if they wanted our "sacrifices?" I wonder if we would want some other country to bomb us to hell in an all-out sacrifice?

I am very sorry for the people who have been maimed and killed in Iraq both American and Iraqi.

"I believe that Islamo-fascism is the greatest threat to mankind in the 21st century."

When will we learn, that all you'll get from the American media nowadays is lies and propaganda? America/Britain/Israel control all so-called Islamic terror. Real Muslims are not so stupid as to invite military retaliation by doing the types terror attacks they're being accused of. Such attacks are really a modern-day boogeyman used by your own corrupt government to keep you afraid and easier to control.

I find it interesting that you are so concerned about this shadowy "Islamo-fascism", but not about good old American Fascism which is actively engaged in the destruction of your national sovereignty right before your eyes! You seem not to care that your Constitution is being systematically destroyed by homegrown fascists of both mainstream political parties. You also don't seem to care that we all face the prospect of a bleak Orwellian future due to this war on freedoms here in the U.S, as well as in Iraq, and Afghanistan. The so-called 'War on Terror' is actually a war on freedom. Wantonly raping and pillaging a country, is not "bringing democracy" but death and destruction instead. The people of Afghanistan and Iraq were in their own countries minding their own business. In spite of what you've been taught, they didn't have anything to do with 9/11. Your President lies to get into a war with people that have done this country no wrong, yet you seem to think this is OK? If you don't want to become an unwitting victim of mass disinformation and indoctrination, I suggest you learn to blockout most of what you hear in the U.S. media.

"And now it is heartbreaking that 1,800 beautiful Americans have died and more than $200 billion in American taxpayer treasure spent so that we could transform the secular totalitarian fascist state of Iraq that had nothing, zero, to do with 9/11, into an Islamic theocracy."

Denis Hamill - YOU DISGUST ME.

Why do you fail to mention the 100,000 plus Iraqi who have died as a result of your bullshit war. Are they not beautiful too?

Clearly the $200bn is of more importance to you. But even then it is a disgrace you fail to mention how much of it went to enrich Bush & Co's oilfield buddies.

No mention of the neocon agenda either I note.

You are a Bush apologist.

Get this propaganda crap of this site please.

And who the heck said we were going to Iraq to change their religion. Islam is a religion, in case you didn't know it. Islam will always be there. Seems like you believed the terrorists and Al-Qaeda when they said this was a religious war. News for you, it never was. It's a war against terrorism, against tyranny, and for freedom. And to somebody else's comment. We did nothing against Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda network because they didn't do anything to us, except blow a hole on the side of one of our warships (which should be reason enough to declare war on them and whoever supported them). We just waited until they destroyed the Twin Towers and killed thousands of innocent people. So, we were going to wat again until Hussein sponsored, or sent his own people to attack us? Seems like people never learn from their mistakes. We made a mistake with Bin Laden, and we paid for it. Let's not make another mistake and let's eliminate the illness before it spreads and kills us.

What you know as Islamic terrorism,i.e. Osama Bin Laden, Zarkarwi etc are actually covert assets of the U.S./British/and Israeli/ intelligence services. If Americans are ever going to successfully deal with the mess in their country today, they must come to grips with the reality of state sponsored terrorism. In other words your own government under the control of certain foreign, and domestic special interests, has a long history of sacrificing and deceiving innocent Americans, when it suits their purposes. The Iraq War should illustrate this clearly.

You now know that the Iraq war was based upon outright lies, but many don't seem to understand that it's also based upon staged terror attacks. This is of course hard for most of you to believe but the truth is often stranger than fiction. The world in which we live is definitely not always what it appears to be. Americans were manipulated into the Iraq war primarily by 9/11. 9/11 was unfortunately a U.S. government masterminded psyop, carefully staged to make the world believe America was attacked by Islamic terrorists. This type of pysop was recently repeated in the London subway bombings, to quell British opposition to Blair's Iraq policies. Your corrupt mainstream media was fully complicit then and now, in deceiving you on 9/11 as well as Iraq. This should help you to understand why Bin Laden always seems to get away!

The attack on the U.S.S. Cole, like the prior attack on the U.S.S. Liberty, were deliberate atrocities engineered or sanctioned by your own government for political ends. The truth about 9/11 and other terror events is out there on the net for anyone to examine for themselves. Please remember that just because you don't believe something, doesn't make it untrue. The 21st century is a perilous time, and Americans will have to grow up mighty fast if they're to have any chance of saving their country from the host of traitors and plunderers now running it.
