If Cindy Will 'Run'.... Why Won't You 'Stand'?
By PA Farruggio
Who is Cindy Sheehan? Is she some celebrity, some artist, some politician? No, she is a simple woman, by her own definition, who led a simple life for most of her 40 something years. Then, to suffer one of the most terrible traumas a mother can suffer.... she lost her son. Her boy, the child she carried 9 months in her womb, that most precious of gifts that our Creator bestows upon us. I have heard stories about my late mother, and how she carried her first child, for the full term, only to hear the news, as she lay half awake in her stupor, that he had strangled on her umbilical cord, and that he was born..... dead! I do believe that the death of her first born, the gift she too carried within her for 9 months, had devastated her for her whole life. She never fully recovered from that trauma, emotionally or psychologically.
Cindy Sheehan lost her son Casey because of .... a lie. A lie perpetrated, in this writer's opinion and that of countless other researchers, from the very highest offices of this government. Simply put, these people wanted a war.... and they got one.... through lies and half truths, and whatever other means leaders do to such ends. We can go through the litany of other leaders in recent history who lied us into wars. The Spanish American War, Vietnam, Granada, Panama..... and now Iraq, to name but a few of the many times this country intervened in another nation's private affairs for our own selfish self interest. Bottom line: mothers like Cindy Sheehan lost their ' most precious gifts ' for nothing short of lies. Her son joined the military to serve his country, and he was sent into harms way by a cabal of cowards, most of whom never even donned a uniform in their lives..... except for Little League or the Boy Scouts. Factor in the 3600 + other dead young Americans, and the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqi civilians ( according to the British medical journal " The Lancet", perhaps 600,000 Iraqis) because of these liars, and there you have it. Cindy Sheehan speaks for all the mothers who have had enough of these despicable people and their despicable acts.
So, we now read how Cindy Sheehan has decided to challenge Mrs. Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, for her seat in Congress. Cindy does not live in that district, but like Senator Clinton and countless others, she is willing to move there to accomplish her goal. What is Cindy Sheehan's goal? Well, she feels, as the mother of a dead son, killed first and foremost by liars, that these leaders must be held accountable. She, like many of us in America, wants ' Hearings of Inquiry into the run-up to the War On Iraq ', which will translate perhaps into ' Hearings of Impeachment ' for Bush and Cheney et all. If Nancy Pelosi will institute such hearings, then Cindy Sheehan will not run against her. Simple, isn't it? We shall see. Methinks Cindy will be running for that seat, given the track record of Mrs. Pelosi and the other Democratic leaders in this country. They had their shot November 6th, and to date, they still vote to fund the occupation of Iraq ( notice the absence of the word ' War' ). John Conyers, now chair of the House Judiciary Committee, promised us in the fall of ' 05 : " When we take back control of the Congress, and I am chair of my committee, one of the first orders of business will be hearings on the run-up to this war." Never happened.
Where does that leave us, the ' still mostly Silent Majority ' of Americans? Many of us, since before the invasion of Iraq, stood and protested . We have continued for over 34 months straight, in towns and cities all over our great land. Yet, our numbers have remained low. So low, that Claire Metz, a local television news anchor, was at least candid and forthright about one thing. I called Claire, about a year ago, and asked her why her station refused to cover our weekly anti Iraq occupation protests. " Phil, I drove by last Tuesday to see what your group was all about, and there were 20 folks out there. If there were a 200 out there, that would be newsworthy."
Rita B. , a retired nurse, stood with us from Day One, each and every Tuesday, despite the fact she has emphysema. Now, she is finally housebound due to the illness. Barbara S. , a college instructor, has such a painful nerve injury, that she brings a chair with her, and sits and holds her sign. Walt and Fran, both 70+ something, have too many ailments to mention, yet, when they reside here in Florida, they come and stand with us. Charlie B., also 70+ something, brings a contraption to allow him to half stand, because he holds a mega pro impeachment sign. John D., 81 and active, brings his megaphone, and 20 protest signs to distribute and place on the ground. Up in Daytona , Phil R. and Kathy B. and friends, create and copy hundreds of documents and info sheets, plus DVDs on 9/11 and Iraq, and hand them out free of charge at their Thursday evening protest. Up in Ormond Beach, on Saturday mornings, there are less than 5 folks who stand each week, in the hot hot sun, holding their signs. I could go on and on with more such anecdotes. The question is: If folks support what Cindy Sheehan is doing, and support what we here in Volusia County, Florida are doing...... why.....or rather .... when... will they too stand up for something so vital, so pertinent, so important for America's survival?
