Want to Impeach Cheney? Think July 23rd

By David Swanson

The impeachment movement is gaining traction, and now - over the next two weeks - is the time to push it all the way to success. Over the weekend, supporters of impeachment made "Impeach Cheney" the number 1 video on Youtube. On Friday, for the first time, a polling company asked Americans if they want Cheney impeached. A majority of 54% said Yes, and the poll was reported in the media. Congressman John Conyers even cited it on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

On July 4, the day of throwing off King Georges, an Impeach Bush and Cheney petition passed 100,000 signatures! So now we're raising the bar to 1 million: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/petition Also on July 4, Los Angeles opened an Impeachment Center, and on July 5 Philadelphia held an impeachment forum (here's the video).

But the date to keep in mind is July 23, 2007. That will be the fifth anniversary of the Downing Street Meeting, the meeting at Number 10 Downing Street at which the head of British intelligence reported that Bush and Cheney were intent on invading Iraq and were going to "fix the intelligence and facts around the policy." The meeting was recorded in the Downing Street Minutes which were leaked in May 2005. It was then that we launched a coalition and a website at AfterDowningStreet.org in order to move the Congress and the media toward impeachment.

This July 23rd, a Monday, Cindy Sheehan will lead a march from Arlington National Cemetery (gather there at 10 a.m.) to Capitol Hill, to the office of Congressman John Conyers to ask him to move forward with impeachment. We will wear orange that day, a color that has come to stand for nonviolent revolution. We encourage as many people as possible to join us, and if you cannot, to phone Congressman Conyers' office that day asking him to move forward on impeachment: (202) 225-5126.

Depending on how things go that day, some of us may choose to remain sitting in Conyers' office reading aloud the U.S. Constitution even at the risk of being arrested. Those not wishing to risk arrest will be able to leave at that point and should not be concerned about taking part. But those willing to go to jail for justice should come and join us in an act of civil disobedience, or stage a sit-in at your congress member's district office: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/sit

The White House continues to announce its refusal to comply with a growing stack of subpoenas (http://www.democrats.com/subpoenas ), even going so far now as to try to block the testimony of former staffers who claim to be willing to testify. ABC asked Conyers about this Sunday morning, and his reply was (I don't know any other way to say this) delusional. Conyers cited the recent poll showing public support for impeachment as a reason why the White House should start complying with subpoenas, and then assured ABC (and anyone at the White House who may have been watching) that he did not intend to impeach anyone.

Here's the problem with that, Chairman Conyers: When you announce that you're bluffing, the bluff doesn't work. Impeachment has often worked as a bluff. Nixon left before he was impeached. The Supreme Court reined in Truman before he was impeached. But when you announce ahead of time that you won't really go all the way to impeachment, nothing short of impeachment has any teeth to it. Remember when you rigged the Iran Contra hearings to avoid impeachment? You got ineffective hearings, a massive cover-up, and electoral defeat. Right now you're repeating two out of three of those results, and Democratic prospects for November 2008 are looking gloomier by the day. Imagine a labor union announcing that it will never strike. It's not that you have to strike every week, but when you announce that you never will, you lose all bargaining power. As surely as the sun rises and night falls, Bush and Cheney will not comply with your subpoenas.

On July 23rd, Cindy Sheehan plans to announce her candidacy for Congress, challenging Speaker Nancy Pelosi to represent the 8th District of California. Sheehan's candidacy is motivated by Pelosi's actively blocking the impeachment of Cheney and Bush. Sheehan will not run if between now and the 23rd Pelosi backs off and allows her colleagues to make up their own minds on impeachment.

The 23rd in DC is part of a march from Texas to New York. Cindy Sheehan, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, and others are leading a march/drive from Crawford, Texas, to New York City. The march will include stops at the district offices of House Judiciary Committee Members Mel Watt, and Bobby Scott to push them to support impeachment. Their Judiciary Committee colleagues Maxine Waters, Hank Johnson, and Keith Ellison have cosponsored Dennis Kucinich's articles of impeachment against Cheney, H Res 333.

Below is the route of Cindy's march and a link for more information and to get involved. Now is the time to get involved in our democracy. Use it or lose it.

I just posted this at The Washington Note blog....but it fits here, too:

Arguments for Impeachment

After reviewing some other references, and blogs, and hearing from some people I respect, many of whom have established legal backgrounds, including those on Marcy Wheeler’s blog, some important points surfaced (paraphrazed here with additions of my own comments):

--No need to feel thwarted by the Democratic Leadership, Pelosi and Reid -- the HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, namely the 23 Democrats can vote to hold impeachment hearings. Get them to do it.

--While there may be some political risks involved, THERE REALLY IS NO CHOICE in view of the risk of NOT proceeding and failing to defend and protect the Constitution and Rule of Law. Members of Congress take an oath to do so. Impeachment in the face of crimes is a LEGAL OBLIGATION of elected officials which must be done to enforce the law. Do not buy into the Republican charge that impeachment is a bad thing - saying that is an admission on their part that they want to block enforcement of the laws of this land.

--Nuremberg concluded that nations that do NOT use impeachment are not civilized. The world knows we have violated the Geneva Conventions, e.g. Failure to take action is evidence of 5 USC 3331 violations...failing to prevent war crimes, etc. That is recklessness. There is no choice, really. Further, members of Congress themselves....along with legal counsel in EOP, OVP, and DoJ and DoD are defying the law by doing nothing.

--Even if the Senate will not convict, there is great potential benefit of even a failed impeachment in laying bare the administration’s crimes. IN NO WAY would a failed impeachment mean Bush or Cheney was/were exonerated! It means we investigated potential crimes.

--Impeachment helps educate the public that this is an essential part of the Constitution -- the trial is to gather information to FIND OUT what they have been doing in our name. Because they are refusing to cooperate with Congress -- and even refuse to recognize that Congress HAS any oversight responsibility (they believe they are above the law) impeachment as a fact-finding mechanism is the only means available to restore any transparency at all to the executive branch.

--EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE vanishes (merely by STARTING impeachment proceedings!), along with Bush’s power to PARDON anyone (or promise to pardon them) who is part of the investigation. The language prohibiting it is in the Constitution. And, it doesn’t matter what the Senate ultimately says or does. Bush will not be allowed to immunize his co-conspirators!

--Acc. to those at Marcy Wheeler’s blog, impeachment should be initiated....immediately....of AG Gonzales first; he has no credibility or sympathy in Congress or the country, and there is no dispute about high crimes and misdemeanors. And, they won’t be able to use the argument that “the commander in chief”...during a time of war....is being unfairly targeted. Cover the same crimes of AGAG that Bush and Cheney are guilty of.....thereby having already established evidence needed. Then impeach Cheney. By keeping them busy with impeachment, they will have less time to work on attacking Iran. By that time so much will have been uncovered and obvious to the public, there will likely be a public outcry to impeach Bush as well.

-- Possibly never in our history before has there been a situation more worthy of using the powers of impeachment the Founders gave us. To do less is to disrespect the very foundations on which the country was built.

--As to backlash on the Dems --ask yourself -- how badly did the GOP suffer for its raw political, hollow, and inappropriate impeachment of Clinton? And, in comparison, we will have done nothing (if we do not impeach BC)? How could that not be shameful? Letting them continue to tell the American people: Go Fuck Yourselves. We will have let them get away with that!

--As it stands now, the OVP and the EOP are getting away with destroying evidence in RNC e-mails. That could be linked to unlawful war crimes planning....with grave consequences for those involved.

--Polls show the people want impeachment to proceed. They are behind impeachment. They are, in fact, growing disillusioned that no action is being taken, thus “...the biggest RISK politically, morally, and constitutionally actually lies in NOT proceeding.”

Cindy Sheehan's threat is very real. Three years ago San Francisco almost elected a Green Party mayor. It was a very close vote. Nancy Pelosi's district is not all of San Francisco just the most progressive part, and all of San Francisco voted an impeachment resolution not that long ago.

In Sonoma Couonty we wil talk about a coordinated action on July 23 at our Impeachment Coalition meeting this week.

Not to rain on your parade, but a "false flag" operation compliments of our very own government timed for when bush and cheney are cornered, will bring all democratic processes to a halt!

PS - anyone see the video from OBL?

In fact, I even transcribed the Bin Laden subtitles here.

And I concur - it is definitely a threat of another false-flag operation.

But you know, if they have really planned such a thing they're going to do it, sooner or later, anyway. What's stopping them? In UBL's own words, "… the swimmer in the sea does not fear the rain". Since 9/11 this country has been "all at sea", to continue the metaphor. We're either going to seize America back or die - alive, in chains or killed outright - in any case.

Regardless, the best course of action is simply to continue our steady advocacy and progress towards JUSTICE. And each one never forget that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Semper Fi,

-Matty in Florida

I just couldn't stand reading the latest tripe I got from UFPJ, entitled "Don't Mend It, END IT!", without sending back this response:

"Dear UFPJ,

You are very foolish - and yourselves derelict, in living up even to your own name; the "J" in UFPJ stands for JUSTICE. And yet, even as you rail against a War of Aggression - in fact the highest crime on Earth - you continue to advocate nothing for justice.

"NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!" Have you never heard that slogan before? Have you no clue to the profound truth of it? What the hell is wrong with you people, anyway? You want Congress-critters to take a firmer stand on ending the Iraq Occupation? Then ADVOCATE FOR IMPEACHMENT.

A poll just came out showing 54% of Americans already favor impeachment (with the rest doubtless not far behind), and already the House Judiciary Chair is quoting it in Congress.

Cindy Sheehan - remember her? - has just announced she will unseat Nancy Pelosi in 2008; specifically because of the Speaker's refusal to impeach.

Last weekend, the #1-viewed YouTube video was about impeachment, as presented at this website.

Watch, learn and then FORWARD THAT widely!

This is the voice of the AMERICAN PEOPLE, finally starting to speak. If UFPJ will not lead - nor follow - then you might as well all just pack up and go home, as you go the way of the dinosaurs. And in the meantime strike the word "Justice" from your name.

Sincerely,

(Matty in Florida)"

July 23rd just happens to be the date that the Takoma Park, MD City Council has chosen to vote on a resolution asking Congress to impeach Bush and Cheney. We are the first town inside the Beltway to do this. We're only six miles away from the Capitol so please come down to our City Council that night and make some noise. For more info, see
http://www.takomaparkibc.wordpress.com

join us that morning and recruit us to come with you that evening

by the way, there's also a Democratic presidential candidates debate that evening - let's give em something to talk about

Whilst I agree with you almost entirely, David, I think making the main focus 'impeachment' plays right into the hands of main suspects, the authors of PNAC.

Taking this route will give them sufficient time to wreak further death and mayhem on a world already groaning under 'Full Spectrum Dominance'. It will give them time to 'complete' the balkanization of the worlds dwindling resources.

What is the alternative?

A careful compilation of the names and addresses and bios on Wikipedia - just look up Council on Foreign Relations, Federal Reserve Bank Inc., American Enterprise Institute and Bohemian Grove - Madame Defarge has no need to knit this time around, as the names that appear on all four lists will give the citizens of the US now preparing to march on DC not only a clear idea of who is in need of citizens arrest but also just who has removed from the entire globe any hope of sanity, truth or justice...

Dust off the tumbrils!

Instigate a Constitutional Party and ask Ron Paul, John Conyers, the survivors of the anthrax attacks and Dennis Kucinich to form it. THEN SUPPORT THEM ACTIVELY TO THE HILT. That's the key...

.

The perfect place for the announcement. Truly inspiring and appropriate. THANK YOU, CINDY SHEEHAN.
