Sheehan Glad Bush Didn't Meet With Her

By ANGELA K. BROWN, Associated Press Writer

(08-30) 17:11 PDT Crawford, Texas (AP) --

A woman who led an anti-war protest for nearly a month near President Bush's ranch said Tuesday that she's glad Bush never showed up to discuss her son's death in Iraq, saying the president's absence "galvanized the peace movement."

Cindy Sheehan's comments came as war protesters packed up their campsite near the ranch and prepared to leave Tuesday for a three-week bus tour.

"I look back on it, and I am very, very, very grateful he did not meet with me, because we have sparked and galvanized the peace movement," Sheehan told The Associated Press. "If he'd met with me, then I would have gone home, and it would have ended there."

Sheehan and about 50 other peace activists arrived in the one-stoplight town Aug. 6, the day after she spoke at a Veterans for Peace convention in Dallas. She and a few others spent that night in chairs in ditches, without food or flashlights, off the main road leading to the president's ranch.

The Vacaville, Calif., woman vowed to stay until Bush's monthlong vacation ended unless she could question him about the war that claimed the life of her 24-year-old son Casey and more than 1,870 other U.S. soldiers.

Two top Bush administration officials talked to Sheehan the first day, but the president never did — although he has said that he sympathizes with her and acknowledged her right to protest. His vacation is to end Wednesday, two days early, so he can monitor federal efforts to help victims of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast.

Sheehan's vigil attracted crowds of other anti-war demonstrators. Most stayed a few hours or days at the original roadside camp or at the second, larger site about a mile away on a private lot offered by a sympathetic landowner.

The massive response has transformed her life, she said.

"I thought our country was going down, down, down. I thought nobody cared about our children killed in the war, but millions care, and millions care about our country and want to make it better," she said. "The love and support I've received give me hope that my life can someday be normal."

The protest also sparked counter rallies by Bush supporters who accused Sheehan of using her son's death to push the liberal agenda of groups supporting her. Critics also said the anti-war demonstration was hurting U.S. troop morale while boosting the Iraqi insurgency.

Many Bush supporters pointed out that Sheehan never spoke against Bush or the war when she and other grieving families met the president about two months after her son died last year.

Sheehan said she was still in shock over Casey's death during that meeting. She said she became enraged after independent reports disputed Bush administration claims that Saddam Hussein had chemical and biological weapons — a main justification for the March 2003 invasion.

After leaving Crawford, protesters will spread their message on a three-week "Bring Them Home Now Tour" with stops in 25 states. Buses on three routes will meet in Washington, D.C., for a Sept. 24 anti-war march.

Sheehan will leave the tour next week to spend time with her family, including her mother who recently suffered a stroke, which caused Sheehan to miss a week of the protest. She plans to attend the march in the nation's capital, hoping to reunite with people who converged on the Texas roadside that came to be known as "Camp Casey."

"When I first started here, I was sitting in the ditch thinking, `What the heck did I do? Texas in August, the chiggers, fire ants, rattlesnakes, uncomfortable accommodations' — but I'm going to be sad leaving here," Sheehan said. "I hope people will say that the Camp Casey movement sparked a peace movement that ended the war in Iraq."

Cindy had courage
She spoke the truth
George didnt
And doesnt
Its all over but the hearings on CSPAN.
God let them come soon.

Cindy speaks for me
from her heart

This is the beginning of the end for GW Bush. Cindy has exposed him for the cancer that he has caused to the American soul. America is not split into camps of for and against Bush. They are separated by ignorance and the truth.

What a bunch of fluff. America is splitted into Democrat and Repulican, and that needs to change!

President Bush met with her once....for cryin' out loud! How the heck can she afford to camp out in Texas for weeks?? Doesn't she have a JOB??? ....a life??? I feel her pain, yes, my son served his country (and Cindy's as well) in Kuwait. He's my ONLY child. If he had lost his life doing so, I would NOT hang around the president and have a huge pity party! I would have been proud of his courage and committment. Was her son FORCED to enlist? I think not. Rather he probably enlisted to get college paid for - somthing Cindy could have done if she had a Job! Ironic?- yeah, you betcha! How is Cindy paying her bills right now? ...let me guess..the GOVERNMENT, right Cindy? Pfffft! Wish I had time to stalk the president, but gee Cindy, I have to WORK!

Get on with your life, Cindy. You are shaming your son's memory.

I pay my own bills and make my own way in life, gal.

Typical conservative tactic: Instead of attacking the message, attack the messanger. Do you know for certain that she lives off the government? And can you really say she merely had a "pity party?" She, like you, is proud of her son and his "courage and commitment." However, Ms. Sheehan, like a growing amount of Americans, has come to believe that her son's very courage, commitment, and ultimate sacrifice were misplaced in a misguided and politically spun war. I think your argument against Ms. Sheehan would have more weight if you addressed her concerns rather than how she was able to stay three weeks in Crawford.

Are you a natural and normal mother? I think not! Let's see, you are more loyal to your Fuhrer than your own son>>>> SICK!!! You are a shame to motherhood, womanhood, human beinghood. Obviously you do not comprehend a thing about the Bushco PNAC illegal invasion, but to think that you would think so lightly of your own son's death for Bushco is beyond insanity. What would you do after your ONLY child died>>> PARTY ON?!@#$% Cindy would rather take some constructive , productive time and seek truth about this war and stop the murder of more people for LIES. Thank her when your son no longer fights illegal wars.
Don't you have to go to WORK lady?

Right now, Carol, I am truly ashamed to call you a fellow American. We can only hope that you will somehow eventually see the ignorance in your words, put your self-serving politics aside, and join the fight for truth and justice.

No amount of spin, denial, deflection, distraction or lies by Bush and his apologist army can change the rock solid fact that there is no legal or moral justification for this war.

Try all you want, but it's a wasted effort.

Cindy's effort, on the other hand, to see to it that her son and all the others did not die in vain is anything but wasted.

We'll be here whenever you're ready for reality, Carol. And you will be welcomed with open arms.

John Perry

Cindy Sheehan is standing up for you and me. To be able to take a stand and withstand all the mean spirited criticism that goes along with it is miraculous,to say the least. Cindy's dignified actions have restored my faith in humanity. And I pray for her and for you Carol
as the times that we live in are deeply frightening and deeply sorrowful for those who have had to survive their children's war stories and for those of us who live in fear that our own families will have to suffer the same fate. Let us choose compassion toward one another at the very least even if we disagree on principle.

So, go live your life and enjoy it and your family. Cindy is doing what she thinks is right, just as you are. You must be speaking for someone else, or you would be busy working and living your life. If you are a supporter of the illegal Iraq war, go spend your time drumming up more war support as they need more soldiers. Your son should go back. I am sure you would be fearless, as you are working and paying your own way and all....As a mother, you should understand some of things motivating another mother for her son. I do.

Hello Carol:

So hows YOUR job? So hows YOUR companies PROFIT margin these days? Hows YOUR companies BOND rating? Oil cutting into YOUR companies profit margin yet?
How is YOUR grocery bill in the last 4 years? How is YOUR health insurance bill and co-pays last 4 years? How is YOUR dentist bills these days? How is YOUR 401K increases? 2 percent i thought so.
Geepers with all these HIGH prices you may have to work 2 jobs!
As for your might just get IT in another 1 year!
Remember those great american dollars pay for so much these days!

my son served his country (and Cindy's as well) in Kuwait.

So how many body parts did YOUR son pick up? How many rounds with the AK47's did YOUR son shoot? How many patrols did YOUR son go on a day? How many days did YOUR son go without meals? How many days did YOUR son have to fight with a "knife" for his life? How many days did YOUR son spend in the top of turket? So how many days did YOUR son spend in IRAQ? How many times did YOUR son see his buddies blown up? Yeap I thought soooo..NADA.

I pay my own bills (for now you do) and make my own way in life, (you might have to become real creative in the very near future) gal.

ps>>>>>>>>>>i'll check back and see how your grocery bill is doing in about 3 months. You need to go to school at night for an economics degree. Hope you enjoy your dollars and as IT continues to buy LESS AND LESS AND LESS.

God what will happen if your child is diagnosed with DU exposure from Kuwait station? Then what are you going to do? Sorry you only have 30 days testing for a true test before it goes to bones? Yikes has he been checked by a NON MILITARY service? Oh yeah the real test costs 1000.00. Geepers you might need a third job now............if you can find one.
Cheers to yeah as i sip my java! That little item will be a luxury item....................soon
