Venezuela to Seek Legal Action Against Robertson

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday his government would take legal action against Pat Robertson and potentially seek his extradition after the U.S. evangelist called for Washington to assassinate the South American leader.

Robertson, who later apologized for the remark, said he was expressing his frustration with Chavez's constant accusations against the administration of President George W. Bush.

"I announce that my government is going to take legal action in the United States ... to call for the assassination of a head of state is an act of terrorism." Chavez said in a televised speech.

The fiery left-wing critic of Bush's foreign policy who frequently charges the U.S. government is plotting to kill him, called Robertson "crazy" and a "public menace."

He said Venezuela could seek Robertson's extradition under international treaties and take its claim to the United Nations if the Bush administration did not act.

Robertson, the founder of the Christian Coalition and a leader of the Christian right that has backed Bush, said on Monday that if Chavez "thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it."

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said political assassination was against the law and was not U.S. policy.

Relations between Chavez and the United States, the top buyer of the OPEC nation's oil, have deteriorated since Chavez survived a brief 2002 coup he says was backed by U.S. authorities. Washington says it is not plotting to kill Chavez and denies involvement in the coup.

Chavez said on Friday Bush would be to blame if anything happened to him. In the past, he has said Venezuela, the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, would cut sales to the United States if he was assassinated.

A close ally of communist Cuba, Chavez presents his self-proclaimed revolution as an alternative to U.S. policies in the region.

Washington says Chavez is a negative influence who uses oil profits to fund anti-democratic groups in South America while becoming more authoritarian at home.

U.S. civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, visiting Venezuela on Sunday, called Robertson's remarks "immoral" and rejected U.S. government claims against Chavez.

Please Hugo, do us a favor! Robertson does less to promote Chrisianity than Halliburton does for budgetary constraint. Perhaps with less men filled with hate like Robertson and Fallwell, the true face of Christ can shine through.

If Bush has to choose between oil & Pat Robertson I think we all know which will win. There isn't much that Bush loves more than oil.Bye Bye Pat,good riddence.

Yes, the "anti-terrorism law" must apply to EVERYBODY equally.
Pat Robertson is a good place to start cleaning our own house.
Then we'll move on to the White House.
Welcome to BLOWBACK TIME!!!!
Venezuela may teach Americans something about real Democracy.

I got a kick out of the government line about Hugo Chavez being "anti-democratic". If ever there was an administration that understood "anti-democratic" behavior it is the Bush administration. Bush, Cheney, Rummy and Condi need only look in the mirror to see "anti-democratic" behavior.

Chavez "sin" (hey Pat, how do you like that religious reference?) is that he will not allow he nor his country to be exploited by the big bad USA! It is Venezuela's oil and that country should be permitted to reap whatever revenue it can legitimately get for its resources.

I sincerely hope Robertson is brought up on international charges stemming from his ignorant comment.

A-men to that!

Dear President Chavez:
I would be pleased to pack Robertson's bags for you!!!
And while you're at it......

"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said political assassination was against the law and was not U.S. policy."

BIGGEST LIE OF ALL!!!!!!!!!
BIGGEST LIE OF ALL!!!!!!!!!
BIGGEST LIE OF ALL!!!!!!!!!

Amen. Bush tried to assassinate Hussein before we invaded by firing missles at him, and did assassinate his sons. No war had yet been declared-still hasn't been.

I recall in the first weeks of the Iraq war a special report interrupted programming to annouce a giant bomb was dropped on a Baghdad restaurant where very reliable sources claimed Saddam was at...result was an entire block was destroyed.. the restaurant was turned into a crater.. and several innocent civilians were killed. No, our government doesn't have a policy of assasination!..as Rumsfeld claims saying it is against the law. So, maybe he can explain who ordered that bombing strike?

Get with the program. If they were killed they were, by definition, "insurgents."

insurgents=any and all collateral damage
just checked the US Constitution can't find any mention about fighting "insurgents" in a foreign land.
Interesting that the lingo changed here too..early on they were called the enemy but then how can they be "the enemy" if Bush invaded Iraq illegally?

We'll take a vote. Fairly sure you can have him.

PS-Would you consider running for president in this country?

Why is this such big news? Pat Robertson is a quack!! Just look at the guy. I look at him and I see "shady man". I put the 700 Club in the same category as infomercials. He's just some guy that managed to get enough money to spout out his beliefs over the airwaves. He's a nobody and a wannabe. His declaration to do anything should be taken as nothing but comical.

He's not a quack....o.k...well maybe...but he has a huge following of like minded christian sheep who parrot and mimic him. He knows FULL WELL the power he has over his brain washed and brain dead masses....he knows full well what his words are capable of doing. He should not be let off the hook as easily as you suggest. Even now his flock are surely crying, "oh poor Pat, look what those bad liberals are doing to him...blah blah, and maybe he's right, blah blah". If Robertson's dreamcicle in the white house wants justice for those who promote terrorism, let him start with the fundamentalist christian monkeys who spew such hatred and intollerance in the name of their so call religeous beliefs.
