The Fire Sermon

By Chris Floyd

08/26/05 "Moscow Times" -- -- In his inaugural speech last January, President George W. Bush repeatedly invoked images of unbridled, ravaging destruction as the emblem of his crusade for "freedom." Fire was his symbol, his word of power, his incantation of holy war. Mirroring the rhetoric of his fundamentalist enemies, Bush moved the conflict from the political to the spiritual, from the outer world to the inner soul, claiming that he had lit "a fire in the minds of men."

But words are recalcitrant things; they have their own magic, and they will often find their own meanings, outside the intentions of those who use them. Bush has indeed inflamed the minds of men -- and women -- with his military crusade. But it is not the "untamed fire of freedom" that scorches them: It is the fire of grief and outrage at the lies that have consumed the bodies of their loved ones. This bitter flame burns in the rubble of blasted houses in Iraq and in the quiet, leafy suburbs of America, where the dead are mourned and the mutilated are left as the enduring legacy of Bush's cruel, wilful and unnecessary war.

This "fire in the mind" has now found its own symbol in the unlikely figure of Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a slain American soldier. Here again, Bush's war-rousing words have gotten away from him. Sheehan's campaign -- which began as a lonely vigil outside Bush's vacation ranch and has now spread across the country -- centers on a single, simple request: that Bush explain to her what he means when he describes the war as "a noble cause."

Sheehan is no professional activist, no savvy insider or political junkie. She's an ordinary citizen whose unadorned speech has none of the sweep and grandeur of Bush's expensively tailored rhetoric. But she has one thing that his professional scripters can never put in the presidential mouth: truth.

They must labor in the service of a lie, but Sheehan has read the Downing Street memos, the Duelfer WMD report, the September 2000 manifesto of a group led by Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld calling for the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and the top-level revelations by Richard Clarke, Paul O'Neill, Seymour Hersh and many others. She knows the mountain of freely available, credible evidence that shows unequivocally that Bush and his minions sought this war of aggression from their first day in power; that they openly longed for "a new Pearl Harbor" to use as justification for their plans; that they deliberately manipulated, "stove-piped" and fabricated intelligence to concoct a false case for war; that they used UN diplomacy as a cynical sham to mask their military intentions and then invaded before the weapons inspection process, which they themselves had insisted upon, was even halfway complete.

Every housewife and truck driver, every Wal-Mart clerk and office worker in the United States has access to this information, these established facts. The death of her son drove Sheehan to throw off the torpor that has afflicted so many of her compatriots for so many years and look reality in the face. There she has seen Iraqi civilians and American soldiers being shredded, gutted and burned alive by the fire of Bush's death-dealing lies. As New York Times columnist Frank Rich notes, she and other war survivors have watched Bush turn the search for WMD -- the ostensible reason for the sacrifice of their children -- into a comedy routine, a filmed skit for sycophantic journalists, showing the president of the United States goofily searching under desks and behind curtains, then shrugging with a dullard's grin: "No weapons here!"

Bush's audience, the highly paid cream of the national media, roared with laughter at the Leader's barbaric wit. Now these same blind guides are struggling to comprehend the fire of dissent that Cindy Sheehan has lit with her vigil in the Crawford scrublands. Many of them have mocked and vilified her, trumpeting the lies that the Bush machine began pumping out like bilgewater the moment her campaign found resonance with the wider public. Others have dismissed it as a flash in the pan, a copy-filler for the August doldrums, a minor blip soon to be swept away by the president's proven mastery of the national agenda.

Perhaps they're right. Perhaps this too shall pass, just as every other scandal and tourbillion that has momentarily shaken the Bush regime -- from Enron to Abu Ghraib and beyond -- has fallen by the wayside. It's true that the polls show that Bush is now deeply unpopular, mistrusted by more than half the electorate, who say, as Sheehan says, that he misled the nation into a pointless war. But by hook and crook, with fear and lies, he and his faction have gathered all the reins of power into their hands. With a complaisant media, a feckless opposition, unprecedented control over the nation's electoral machinery -- and the full backing of the corporate oligarchy they have enriched beyond all measuring -- the Bush elitists are not much concerned with the "consent of the governed" anymore. They will wade on through the swamp of blood they have created, generating more terrorism, sacrificing more sons and daughters, engendering more hatred, anguish and death.

But what if the form that Sheehan has somehow given to the nation's growing sense of betrayal does not simply fade at summer's end? What if that spark takes hold in the Texas scrub and sets off "an untamed fire of freedom" from the murderous lies that have led America into crime and disgrace? We might yet see Bush undone by his own incantation -- and truth become the new word of power.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you please try to keep intact the original reference links in articles such as this one. It shouldn't be too hard if you first save the original locally as an HTML page.

It's not a "big deal", but I think it would help to maintain the integrity of the item and also to assist those who may want to do a little more in-depth research on particular issues.

There is usually a "link to original" where all the hyper links are active. Small effort to go there, if you want them.

That's why I said it's not a big deal. Just thought it might be a worthwhile improvement (especially for lazy researchers like me) if it's not too much extra work -- and it really shouldn't be very difficult.

But I think there were techie reasons why the URL had to be linked with the "Link to original."

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll see if it's possible.

Just to be clear, the LINK TO ORIGINAL is just fine the way it's being done. Other (reference) links within the original article, however, seem often (not always) to get dropped when it's reproduced here.

I think (not sure) that some of you are just copying plain text from the original while others are transferring the HTML page and thus preserving its internal [a href=""] links to referenced sources, etc.

Anyhow, not to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Just a minor suggestion.

Thanks Canada!
Unfortunately, there are many Americans who applaud this vulgar, arrogant and ignorant behavior from their "president".
They think that makes him a "straight-talker" and "someone they could have a beer with".
I know, its hard to believe.

In 2002, a Canadian prime ministerial aide called Bush a "moron" for his stance on Iraq, and that was long before his actual "shock and awe" crusade. (Story here.) Do you suppose that Canadians have some prescient facility for evaluating Whitehouse residents that is denied to their American counterparts?

Perhaps if you took a closer look at my posting and my website you would realize I am an American Citizen who is moving to Canada. Perhaps you should think before you speak (or type).

Who cares?.... it's not about YOU.

"President Bush is actually the greatest liberator of Muslims in history, considering that there weren’t 50 million people in the entire MIddle East when Saladin beat back the Crusader hordes. But to the anti war activists, providing freedom from slavery, democratic and economic opportunity to brown skinned people isn’t worth the sacrifice of white Americans. Good thing they weren’t around when Lincoln was drafting the Emancipation Proclamation."

Hey! MA Mom, wake up're dreaming!
Saladin, the Crusaders and even Lincoln are all
gone bye-bye, now.
Long, long time ago.....wake up, now!
This is a new era. Quit picking through the bones of the past looking for heroes, direction and the justification for your present ignorance.
WAKE UP!!!!!

Where in the constitution does it give any American president legal authority to liberate anyone from another country? If you want to fight and die to liberate Iraqi's, fine, you should be free to do so, but do not put a gun to my head and take money from my back pocket to finance your adventure. I am sure all the tens of thousands of Iraqis who were killed and are being killed appreciate there liberation. If Iraqis want freedom it is up to Iraqi boys to fight and die for it, not American boys who are sent there by force and have no choice in the matter.

You have a short memory, this war was not foisted on the American citizen for liberating Iraq; the reason was to find WMDs and al Queda, which were about to destroy our country; this was all a pack of loes of course and the freedom and democracy is all an after thought to save little George's sorry butt when there was no WMD or Al Queda link!

Your sense of history is as short as your memory, Lincoln did not give a shit about liberating black slaves, he was trying to preserve the Union. The emancipation proclamation was a pure political ploy to distract everybody from his real intentions by cynicaly making the war about slavery insted of his real intentions to preserve the union, specificaly the emancipation proclamation was to prevent foreign powers(France, Englsnd)from interfering in the civil war on the side of the Confedercy. Further note, the emancipation proclamation did not free slaves in slave states not part of the confedercy, how blantly political can you get?

One last shot, the real reason for this war was not WMD or Al Queda, little George Stupid knew full well that this was all a pack of lies; he wanted war from the very begining, even before 9/11 so that he could be a heroic war time president and reap truck loads of political capital. Think about that, how obscene, little George Bush was willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of innocent lives solely for his personal selfish political gain, I can not think of a greater monster than this little man in the Whit House. If you want to die for his lies, then go for it, but leave the rest of us out of it.

True or False?!1p3SFwAAH1C7wcDt_kAt--3g!229.entry

This is not difficult to believe is true.
I grew up around several "un-recovered" alcoholics and Little George W's manner has always been very familiar to me. He is a sick man living in a delusion and he has been supported by enablers all is life. This was clear to me from the beginning, based on my experience. I didn't need to read any accounts to see what he was. I never voted for him. It has been sad watching for four years as he acts out and seeing so many people fooled by this reckless man with a common problem, too arrogant to be helped. It is also one of the most common things for his type to reach to religion as a cure. It can help some...but obviously not all. The most arrogant and megalomaniac individuals find a recovery program such as AA much too threatening in its requirement for honesty and humility. They burst the bubble on being a "special big-shot".
I fear he won't stop on his own until he drives everyone over the cliff with him. The best thing for this country would be for him to have a breakdown and start drinking again.

"Faced with a constant drizzle of bad news and purposely demoralizing commentary, millions of people stick out their jaws and hang tight. I am no fan of populism, but I surmise that these citizens are clear on the main point: It is out of the question--plainly and absolutely out of the question--that we should surrender the keystone state of the Middle East to a rotten, murderous alliance between Baathists and bin Ladenists. When they hear the fatuous insinuation that this alliance has only been created by the resistance to it, voters know in their intestines that those who say so are soft on crime and soft on fascism."

Were you invested in the STOCK MARKET on 3/10/2000?

The USA use to be the WORLD RESERVE CURRENCY not anymore check the IMF site.

This enabled the USA to finance the great big DEFICITS!

We the USA print dollars and IT costs USA nothing.

Years ago the PETRODOLLAR was created....for OIL. (breton woods)

on 11/2000 SADDAM decided no more OIL unless it was sold in EUROS.

first barrel shipped out of IRAQ last year 2004 was shipped in DOLLARS not EUROS. The BUSH puppets switched the currency from EUROS back to USA DOLLARS.

all of the EU's countries USE MORE oil than the entire USA.

EU countries start dumping the US DOLLAR as their reserve currency (the currency to buy and sale for international trade). They start buying EUROS to build their reserves.

Inflation starts the more the dollar falls. Dollar buys LESS and LESS!
US Government doesn't include FOOD AND ENGERY in the Consumer Price Index. Shhhh don't ttell the american public that!

Smell the INFLATION for the past 4 years in your grocery bill and your energy bill.

Uncle Al removes ability of issuing any 30 year bond 3 years ago. The 30 year bond is always used a HEAD read for INFLATION. US TREASURY called in past issued 30 year BONDS with HIGH interest rates. (the bonds that have call options). Make the deficit look pretty!

Iran dumps USA DOLLAR

Venezula dumps USA DOLLAR

North Korea dumps USA DOLLAR

China dumps the USA DOLLAR (pegs their currency to a basket of float, NOT USA DOLLAR)

MORE and MORE countries dumping the USA DOLLAR

My ..MY.....even SAUDI ARABIA starts holding less and less US DOLLARS, limiting investments in the USA.

IRAN announces NEW OIL COMMODITIES exchange to open in 3/2006....only EUROS for OIL no DOLLARS.......hmmmm......View all the WHITE HOUSE negative media about IRAN lately past 1 year. Wonder if BUSH will invade IRAN before the exchange opens?

Bush was warned by Buffett and EX_FED RUBIN about using the dollar as a weapon.

At present IRAQ is our 4th largest importer of oil NOW! Geee I wonder why they are blowing up the oil wells over in IRAQ?

Why are the military bases located around the pipelines in IRAQ and the newly created BTC Afghanistan pipeline project? Hope your BTC AFHGANISTAN pipeline (1000 ft of pipeline quicker road to export more economical) from the Caspian Sea basin gets done soon. This pipeline plan was available years ago but no country could manage to build it. Why? Because of the on going fighting in AFGHANISTAN with the Taliban. And infact our US government had many meetings with the Taliban prior to 9/11 regarding the unrest and the pipeline project.

And if you think your job is SAFE well check back in 2 years? Oh yeah and after you drop off the unemployment time frame they don't count YOU as unemployed even if you HAVE NOT FOUND A JOB. You aren't included in the governemnts unemployment numbers. These oil prices will stop the US ECONOMY dead in the tracks. 66 dollars a barrel was the inflation HIGH of the 70's at todays current prices........

Interest how about 9 percert on a 30 year bond coming to a venue near you....

SO YOU PRO BUSH SUPPORTERS ...don't forget to send him a little thank you card for all is great finance venues.
Maybe it would be less costly if the troops would have stayed AT HOME?

PS....Bush "needs" DEMOCRACY in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN for the OIL and the safety of the Pipelines not for the people of any flavor! Think he will ever get his IRAQ democracy .....maybe if you bring back the draft add 800000 more troops. Add senators and congress individuals ship them over too. Laura Bush's skills are much needed at the Baghdad Lirary !

It's the status of the U.S. dollar and related macro-economic impacts (not merely oil per se) that's at the heart of the "noble cause" in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Sadaam's big sin had nothing whatever to do with any (purely imaginary) military threat. It was his threat to base the sale of Iraq oil resources on the Euro or a "basket" of currencies rather than on the U.S. dollar. In that respect at least, the war is already a lost cause unless they move on to "nuke" Iran as Cheney threatens to do.

The really SAD part is the so
Submitted by CALLING MILITARYT MOMS! (not verified) on Sat, 2005-08-27 15:15.
The really SAD part is the soldier who calls home speaks with his mother about all the GREAT THINGS he is DOING in IRAQ. I'm building a school and giving candy out. Soldier then belives in his duty. The mom feels proud. The mom doesn't realize that behind the CURRENCY CURTAINS what is really going on....only what the son is telling her. Most americans can't even invest their own 401K correctly let alone figure out the currency international market. They don't understand that ALL exchanges are marrried to one another. SO BUSH gets away with using these soldiers any way he wants too. As for Cheney the little red devil ....he belongs in the CASPIEN SEA burried under his oil finds!

Wait till these american military moms spent time and invest hours in to the real truth! They will realize their loved ones have been used as pawns "to try" to protect the american dollar verses euros = oil!

This reminds me of the WIZARD OF OZ!

In a awful example of "We Told You So": W.Bush's Iraqi misadventure has become the utter disaster we all knew it would be! His father, and his father's former advisors warned him not to invade Iraq. The best of our retired generals warned him against this senseless undertaking. The majority of the American people also clearly let him know that above all, we didn't want our nation blundering into another Vietnam! Did W. Bush listen to all of this sage advice? Absolutely not! He instead listened to the advice of his most special-interest tainted, warmongering advisers! The Rumsfelds, the Feiths, the Cheney's, and the Wolfowitz's! The "Shock and Awe" crowd! Now our clearly "in over his head" President wants the nation to follow his pathetic example and blindly follow the course set for him by his neo-con masters! Like Vietnam, the Iraq war is unwinnable, yet in true Orwellian doublethink this disaster is touted as a "Noble Cause"! What arrogance!

The Nixon administration was eventually forced to turn tail and bailout of Vietnam. Rather than harm the U.S., this manuever merely corrected a disastrous foreign policy mistake, and chastened a generation of U.S. warmongers. The architects of Vietnam were rightfully discredited and the nation moved on. The architects of the Iraq debacle have also rightly been discredited. Their stupedous arrogance won't allow them to face reality and correct their mistakes. Detached from reality, they and their zombie-like followers, press on and think we are dumb enough to continue to follow! In their demented viewpoint it's better for more Americans and Iraqis to die in this senseless war, than they be held accountable for the many crimes they committed to get us into this quagmire, and those they commit each day we remain so engaged!
