Good Riddance Attention Whore

By Cindy Sheehan

I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called “Face” of the American anti-war movement. Especially since I renounced any tie I have remaining with the Democratic Party, I have been further trashed on such “liberal blogs” as the Democratic Underground. Being called an “attention whore” and being told “good riddance” are some of the more milder rebukes.

I have come to some heartbreaking conclusions this Memorial Day Morning. These are not spur of the moment reflections, but things I have been meditating on for about a year now. The conclusions that I have slowly and very reluctantly come to are very heartbreaking to me.

The first conclusion is that I was the darling of the so-called left as long as I limited my protests to George Bush and the Republican Party. Of course, I was slandered and libeled by the right as a “tool” of the Democratic Party. This label was to marginalize me and my message. How could a woman have an original thought, or be working outside of our “two-party” system?

However, when I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards that I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the “left” started labeling me with the same slurs that the right used. I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of “right or left”, but “right and wrong.”

I am deemed a radical because I believe that partisan politics should be left to the wayside when hundreds of thousands of people are dying for a war based on lies that is supported by Democrats and Republican alike. It amazes me that people who are sharp on the issues and can zero in like a laser beam on lies, misrepresentations, and political expediency when it comes to one party refuse to recognize it in their own party. Blind party loyalty is dangerous whatever side it occurs on. People of the world look on us Americans as jokes because we allow our political leaders so much murderous latitude and if we don’t find alternatives to this corrupt “two” party system our Representative Republic will die and be replaced with what we are rapidly descending into with nary a check or balance: a fascist corporate wasteland. I am demonized because I don’t see party affiliation or nationality when I look at a person, I see that person’s heart. If someone looks, dresses, acts, talks and votes like a Republican, then why do they deserve support just because he/she calls him/herself a Democrat?

I have also reached the conclusion that if I am doing what I am doing because I am an “attention whore” then I really need to be committed. I have invested everything I have into trying to bring peace with justice to a country that wants neither. If an individual wants both, then normally he/she is not willing to do more than walk in a protest march or sit behind his/her computer criticizing others. I have spent every available cent I got from the money a “grateful” country gave me when they killed my son and every penny that I have received in speaking or book fees since then. I have sacrificed a 29 year marriage and have traveled for extended periods of time away from Casey’s brother and sisters and my health has suffered and my hospital bills from last summer (when I almost died) are in collection because I have used all my energy trying to stop this country from slaughtering innocent human beings. I have been called every despicable name that small minds can think of and have had my life threatened many times.

The most devastating conclusion that I reached this morning, however, was that Casey did indeed die for nothing. His precious lifeblood drained out in a country far away from his family who loves him, killed by his own country which is beholden to and run by a war machine that even controls what we think. I have tried every since he died to make his sacrifice meaningful. Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives. It is so painful to me to know that I bought into this system for so many years and Casey paid the price for that allegiance. I failed my boy and that hurts the most.

I have also tried to work within a peace movement that often puts personal egos above peace and human life. This group won’t work with that group; he won’t attend an event if she is going to be there; and why does Cindy Sheehan get all the attention anyway? It is hard to work for peace when the very movement that is named after it has so many divisions.

Our brave young men and women in Iraq have been abandoned there indefinitely by their cowardly leaders who move them around like pawns on a chessboard of destruction and the people of Iraq have been doomed to death and fates worse than death by people worried more about elections than people. However, in five, ten, or fifteen years, our troops will come limping home in another abject defeat and ten or twenty years from then, our children’s children will be seeing their loved ones die for no reason, because their grandparents also bought into this corrupt system. George Bush will never be impeached because if the Democrats dig too deeply, they may unearth a few skeletons in their own graves and the system will perpetuate itself in perpetuity.

I am going to take whatever I have left and go home. I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost. I will try to maintain and nurture some very positive relationships that I have found in the journey that I was forced into when Casey died and try to repair some of the ones that have fallen apart since I began this single-minded crusade to try and change a paradigm that is now, I am afraid, carved in immovable, unbendable and rigidly mendacious marble.

Camp Casey has served its purpose. It’s for sale. Anyone want to buy five beautiful acres in Crawford, Texas? I will consider any reasonable offer. I hear George Bush will be moving out soon, too…which makes the property even more valuable.

This is my resignation letter as the “face” of the American anti-war movement. This is not my “Checkers” moment, because I will never give up trying to help people in the world who are harmed by the empire of the good old US of A, but I am finished working in, or outside of this system. This system forcefully resists being helped and eats up the people who try to help it. I am getting out before it totally consumes me or anymore people that I love and the rest of my resources.

Good-bye America…you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can’t make you be that country unless you want it.

It’s up to you now.

Ignore these Democratic Party idiots who would prefer to continue the war machine! They do not care about the needless maiming and loss of life. Instead, they would prefer to keep Nancy Pelosi in office. As you know the possibility of you running against Nancy Pelosi has them messing their pants.

rbrtfis@aol.com

...for this step that you've taken, Cindy. You've done as much as anyone can - maybe now's the time for letting matters take their course (the dam of lies and mendacity can't withstand the pressure of the headwaters of resentment behind it forever!). You're not lacking for friends you can really trust, who stand outside the corrupt, stinking system. Not only in your country, but throughout the World - represented in my country alone by such as Rose Gentle and Reg Keys.

So, welcome back to the ranks of REAL peace people, Cindy! Come and see us in Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK one day!

A final word, quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King: "...no lie can live forever".

Say it isn't so, Cindy. I can't imagine all you have gone through, but do know how you have touched so many of us.
Take some time by all means, but come back to us. We need you, desperately.
Rain

Good luck and best wishes to you. Your son did not die in vain; his death helped you to become the person you are and he is with you still. You have touched all of our lives and I appreciate your sacrifice. Thank you Cindy and Casey.

Dearest Cindy, You have poured your heart, mind, blood, sweat and tears into a peace movement so other young American men and women (regardless of race, creed, party, etc.), and innocent civilians around the world will not die due to Bush's (and Cheney's) PNAC war machine. You are a Mom who has lost everything except her remaining children and extended family. I want you to know that you have MILLIONS of friends who consider you part of their extended families around the world and on the internet. You have influenced MILLIONS of people, not just in America, but in Iraq and around the world , to SEE peace, FEEL it, TASTE it , SLEEP it, and to LIVE in peace.

I know you feel deeply as I do about the best things for this country, and this World . Most Moms do, but you empowered and embraced those collective thoughts to give tremendous energy to the Peace & Impeach Movements. There are so many good things that I know you could spend the money (funding this war) on instead, and I know you would spend it so much more wisely. I will not name the list here, but I know that you would care for the people & the environment if that Trillion Dollars was yours to spend, instead of Bush's .

We are Americans who are tired of our two-party system hoodwinking us into voting for them just so they can have money and power amongst themselves. We are Americans who are tired of a war machine that cares more about profits from war than for people to work in peace. We are tired of an oil industry that will go into war-torn countries to steal their oil production from the natives of their own land. And yes, we Americans are tired , oh so very, very tired of AIPAC illegally lobbying our political leaders from both parties for decades to use & abuse our American blood and treasure for another nation's domestic gains and ME policies/wars.

It breaks my heart that you are tired and heartbroken of all this, but as a Mom I certainly understand. I wish the government really stood behind Mom and apple pie, but really, it doesn't, does it Cindy?

God Bless you on this Memorial Day and Casey Sheehan's Birthday.

Thank you for your courage and your heart-felt commitment. This country indeed does not wish to be healed; that would require an honest look at ourselves and our institutions. And our values, and our cosmic mockery that is called leadership.

You did way more that any individual should have to do. My life is very low-profile and stays in my local realm. But I too reached the same conclusion over the weekend. I was active in many peace group and 2 local democratic clubs because I honestly felt that if the Dems got the majority, they would express the will of the people. It took the horrible lesson of the Iraq Accountability Act to shatter my last illusions. I'm out too.

I am terribly sorry that Cindy is so fed up, so burned out. Humans indeed are violent, misogynistic, sexist, and racist, and working with each other is fraught with difficulty. The two party corporate militaristic federal government is indeed intrenched, and the USA is fascism personified. I only wish that I had a daughter like Cindy Sheehan.

Dear Cindy,
Every word that you wrote is true. You and your family have given more than your share to our country. I remember well seeing you at the After Downing Street hearings in the basement of the Capitol. I could see that they were trying to make you "mother of the fallen war hero." They thanked you so much -- even though the war you son died for was based on LIES. You saw through it.

We do not deserve all the effort you have expended on us or all the sacrifice your family has made for us. But you did it and we love you for it! You made a difference. Someone else will have to take up the huge hole that you will leave in the peace movement.

After you go home and have a well-deserved rest, I hope that you will consider running in an election. My dream would be to have you replace Nancy Pelosi. She must be extremely unpopular out there in San Francisco. Isn't that where you live or couldn't you move into that district? I don't know west coast geography very well.

It would be beyond wonderful to have you in the government. It is possible that Americans are so corrupt that they could be bought with big campaign money and Nancy the murderess will return to power. If you would give us just that one more chance, we would appreciate it forever.

You have done so much, suffered so much, given so much, learned so much and understood so much, it would be a shame to waste it. Never-the-less, whatever you do in the future, America owns you a huge debt of gratitude -- not for the horrible waste of your son's life -- but because you stood up and spoke truth to power!

If only you and Dennis Kucinich and other brave souls had power! Thank you Cindy for all that you have done.
Much love,
CP

you can disagree with Sheehan without calling her a publicity whore. I don't think she was. I didn't agree with her on everything she did, but I felt she did anything she did with a genuine heart. I hope she can get her life back in order. She's sacrificed enough, God knows, for her Country.

Hello Cindy,

Whatever happens -- I wish you the very best. It is a long struggle against the military-imperialist state which is our current government. You have done great work and inspired many! Thank you for your hard work and deep conviction to peace and justice.

I just want everyone in the movement to know this is a long, long struggle. Many were deflated by the recent funding for more war and occupation ($94 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan). The Dems are not our friends, truth is -- and social justice and peace are our goals. We must keep on going.

My friends Thomas and Concepcion have been in front of the White House for 26 years on their anti-nuke vigil. They are amazing, and they've kept it going. Recently I stopped by in the evening to speak with Thomas, and he said the important part is not that house (pointing to the White House), but ALL THE PEOPLE who come by here. Indeed, it's people power which will change the world -- not governments and certainly not political parties.

In hope for peace with justice,
Pete

Cindy...the democrats have done the ONLY thing they could, in the face of such insane circumstances. They made everyone get on the record with the first vote. Then, they HAD TO give Bush his funding, so that this remains Bush's war...as well as a republican war. If we had defunded it...the bizarre but inevitable spin will be placed on this that "If only the democrats hadn't taken away the money...we could have won" THAT is reality. Plus...it's quite possible that Lieberman would have switched parties...putting an end to the investigations we MUST have to change our country.
We are standing on the brink, Cindy. There is no time for a principled stand against this war. Pragmatism states that we MUST let this debacle take down the republican party. It's our only chance. It's horrible that more must die...but the cause is NOT to save Iraq or to change the middle east...the cause has become...the destruction of the republican party.
If we don't deal with issues of global warming, and toxic plumes and a variety of other horrifying scenarios....perhaps millions of lives will be lost. As long as republicans have power...they will prevent the rational conversation we need to have to deal with those issues.

Please, Cindy...consider what's at stake.

Mrs Sheehan,
If you must step back to catch your breath, get away from the vitriol and rest from your extensive and exhaustive activity for the past 3 years, please, please take your time. But do not give up on us, I'm begging you! You are a national treasure and an inspiration to all of us. Those that speak ill of you, do not want to contend with the atrocities committed by the Bush Administration and/or are unwilling to accept that we are all responsible for your son's death. We couldn't or wouldn't see the lies and impending destruction of our beloved democracy as it was happening. You are a hero to the fallen, the wounded and the citizenry of this country and the entire world who believe in democracy, truth and justice. Those that damn you for challenging the Democratic leadership to keep their word are unwilling to accept that the Democrats must also have their feet held to the fire. Please do not leave us! We need you and believe in you!

Dear Cindy,

You've made a very wise decision in choosing to stand down, because you have done more than enough. You go out with honour, and you'll never be forgotten - least of all by me. I hope that I speak for all of the people who had the honour of meeting you at the London International Peace Conference in December '05, and for the many friends (including Rose Gentle and Reg Keys) that you've made outside of your own country, that you're at least 100,000 times the person that Bush and his crew (and now sadly the "opposition") collectively will ever be.

Somehow, I'm sure that this isn't the last we've heard of you. Here's an Irish blessing:

"May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

May God be with you and bless you:
May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you".

Blessings and peace,

Dear Cindy,
I am not surprised by this reaction. When I dared to question Rep. Obey in the Halls of Congress about their plan to end the war, I was maligned by the left and right. I had been in the Halls of Congress for six weeks and had heard that this plan for the supplemental was simply a way to pass it back to the Republicans for ownership and ensure the war wouldn't end so they could increase their majority in '08. This has come to pass just as Pelosi and Obey and many others up there said they would do. Here are a few comments I received because I dared to even question the Democrats:

"I’ll be posting everywhere that your begging for money for your free vacation in DC."

"Please for god sakes, get informed before you confront a great member of Congress and accuse him of wanting to continue the war. What kind of lie is that? Honestly!"

"You are a worthless speck on the ass of humanity. "

"You should hide in your closet and put a gun in your mouth like that
whiney Mom's son did. Hopefully he pulled the trigger cause his Mother is a fucking moron."

"If you aren't brave enough to film someone to their face [which we actually did, no hidden camera and no ambush, just unvarnished truth of everyday in the halls of congress], then you are weak and a coward."
"Don't be stupid. Quit setting us back you stupid ass clowns!"

"Please don't call yourself a "peace" activist when
your actions do nothing but prolong the suffering of
the people of Iraq."

"Stupid ass!!!"

"Well I guess we know the reason for your “commitment to this cause,MONEY. Good luck with your 15 minutes of fame."

"You are either a `plant` actually working FOR the Neocons to advance their war plans and help them start a war with Iran, and get more kids killed and US tax dollars wasted, or you are the absolute most incompetent lobbyist in the history of US government- IF your not a plant PLEASE go home NOW, before your incompetence and stupidity helps Bush even more than you already have. If you are a Neocon `plant`, then i have to admit you did a fantastic job as a pro-war agitator. You would probably screw that up too."

"You are a stupid stupid, self important fool, who just want recognition for `something`, and your son is nothing but your ticket to fame."

"Like many American's, you're delusional."

"Why not challenge a Republican; how about Lieberman!!!!! There is a man to challenge about his Vote."

"Show some guts. Go after Lieberman; Obey is comrade. Go after a Republican from your home state. That takes spine."

"What are you,..a five year old mental imbecile, with your fucking Poem?"

"I bet you wish `Cloy` could go back to Iraq and get killed, or at LEAST get a couple of legs blow off so you would really have some status, you neo-whore...just imagine how great that would be..YOU WOULD BE A DIVA, THEN!!. After all, YOU would be the mother of a Iraq war casualty then, and it would be all about you, just like you want, you PHONY. "

"all you have is a congenitally, mentally deficient retard for a son who churns out stupid nursery ryhmes like the inbred you are. I lost respect for a good man like David Obey for stopping to talk to a Neocon fake like you, he should have seen through your game. WHATS WRONG MOMMA AND DADDY NEVER GAVE YOU ENOUGH ATTENTION? NOW LATCHING ON TO IDIOT, DOLTISH, CLOY IS YOUR LAST FADING HOPE AT 50 TO GET SOME PUBLIC ATTENTION ??? "

" fuck them in the ass after they are decent enough to give you a few minutes of time not because of anything YOU did, but because you traded-off your sons service, TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL IMPORTANT, you goddamn wortheless tool."

" I was gonna give a few bucks to a few local groups--but because Dave Obey--of ALL people, Dave Obey--was targeted and maligned and mischaracterized, I'm giving $500 to him. Even though he's got a safe seat. I never thought I'd give money to politics, but there it is."

"Lobby the Republican Congressmen who blindly vote for Bush’s policies. They are the problem."

"We cannot succeed if we continue to fight with ourselves. Lobby those who vote on the opposite side of the issue, not those working to make as much progress as is possible."

"you should have done that before your kid joined a force whose only function is murder!"

"This nation has wrecked and continues to destroy this once wonderful nation full of people no less than you and your son and his buddies commit murder and destruction and i should feel sorry for him? I feel far more sympathy for those who have been murdered than i do for those who do the murdering."

" get him lots public attention, like you used him for! Since he wasnt a Iraq war casualty though he not as useful as he could be...oh, but you already know that, umm.. have him write some more fucking poems! "

"In drawing attention to yourself in this manner, you are proving yourself ignorant"

Yes, you will get this and much more because now that the Democrats are in power, the party faithful will flee to defend them and abandon the peace process.

Today is a hard day for those with loses in this war. As we near the '08 election, the democratic operatives will turn it up to attack anyone that dares challenge the Democrats. Daily Kos, MoveOn and others will side against anyone seeking peace because it doesn't represent their Party dictate. They will even redefine peace if they have to. If you haven't noticed, they have already redefined "out of Iraq" to a "New direction in Iraq"

Take some time to rest. I know you deserve it. But your voice is needed in the effort for peace.

PS: Don't forget the Peace Convention in Philly we are doing July 4th.

I feel so bad for you, Cindy. I have to add that I share your attitude. You have shown the real America in this post, much as Howard Zinn did in his People's History. I think the only small chance this country has for true reform is if some powerful, uncorrupted third party candidate is elected in 2008. And even if that happens, the chance that substantial change will occur is small due to the immediate pressures the establishment will marshal against any meaningful change.

I fought the war before it started and I've fought it in my own small ways ever since to no avail. I didn't give as much of myself as Cindy, not even close. I didn't lose a son or a spouse or my financial underpinnings. But I've put my money and time on the line and to no avail. Only a small fraction of Americans give a goddamn about all the real death, all the real destruction that is done in our name around the world. I have litttle but contempt left for this stupid country. The system is rigged. Cindy has discovered it, so have I. About all I hope for is some true justice, in any form it chooses to come. You can believe that I'll be cheering it on. I'm done believing in the phony system; I'm done, I'm out of it.

My prediction: Nothing will change in the US until a perfect storm of events makes things untenable for a substantial percent of the middle and upper-middle class. Then there will be a minimal amount of reform--enough to silence 55% of the aggrieved. Then the powers will begin anew to whittle away at what has been given. This is the way it has always been in the United States.

Just want to send you some money to help out. And to let you know I love you; both what you've done and who you are.

Cindy,
Let us know where we can send money to you, however little it might be to help you. We want you to have all that you need. You have done so very much for us. Your friend always.
CP

Like all the families and neighbors and friends on "It's A Wonderful Life"! You and your kids gotta lot more life to live... always , remember you gotta friend, you got LOTS & LOTS of 'em :-)

As I will no longer contribute to the democratic party, I would rather send a donation to you.

Good luck Cindy...your courage and determination will be missed.

I presume that you are reacting to the attacks of the Demo Party
cult upon hearing the news of your defection. Read about the treatment
Malcolm X got in a somewhat similar situation. When you radicalize
you don't often take large entrenched institutions with you.
Do't forget the thousands of us determined but low profile individuals
who have supported you all along and been hoping you would finally break with the two party state. Welcome to the free world.
Doug Nielson

Dear Cindy
I was saddened with your announcement that you are leaving the leadership role in the struggle to change America. I wish you all the happiness you so richly deserve---God speed and may the wind always be at your back.

The democrats have broken my heart. The peace movement is full of wonderful people and yes, there are those among us who let their egos get in the way of making change a reality. I took the name of the Lone Vet in 2000 because I wanted to show people they could do things on their own. I join with others when I feel what they are doing advances the struggle for peace--Code Pink, the Women in Black and Veterans for Peace are wonderful people and know how to laugh, in the spirit of Molly.

There are times where I have to stop because family and friends are in need of my company, or I need their wisdom to tell me what they see and feel. You have done much and any criticism of your actions is nonsense and should be expelled like a bad tooth. I have always admired you and love you for your courage and statements that will live far beyond our years. Take care of yourself and do something special for Cindy.

In Peace and Hope,

Joseph Walsh

An Open Letter to the Democratic Congress
Why I Am Leaving the Democratic Party

By CINDY SHEEHAN

Dublin, Ireland

Dear Democratic Congress,

Hello, my name is Cindy Sheehan and my son Casey Sheehan was killed on April 04, 2004 in Sadr City , Baghdad , Iraq . He was killed when the Republicans still were in control of Congress. Naively, I set off on my tireless campaign calling on Congress to rescind George's authority to wage his war of terror while asking him "for what noble cause" did Casey and thousands of other have to die. Now, with Democrats in control of Congress, I have lost my optimistic naiveté and have become cynically pessimistic as I see you all caving into "Mr. 28%"

There is absolutely no sane or defensible reason for you to hand Bloody King George more money to condemn more of our brave, tired, and damaged soldiers and the people of Iraq to more death and carnage. You think giving him more money is politically expedient, but it is a moral abomination and every second the occupation of Iraq endures, you all have more blood on your hands.

Ms. Pelosi, Speaker of the House, said after George signed the new weak as a newborn baby funding authorization bill: "Now, I think the president's policy will begin to unravel." Begin to unravel? How many more of our children will have to be killed and how much more of Iraq will have to be demolished before you all think enough unraveling has occurred? How many more crimes will BushCo be allowed to commit while their poll numbers are crumbling before you all gain the political "courage" to hold them accountable. If Iraq hasn't unraveled in Ms. Pelosi's mind, what will it take? With almost 700,000 Iraqis dead and four million refugees (which the US refuses to admit) how could it get worse? Well, it is getting worse and it can get much worse thanks to your complicity.

Being cynically pessimistic, it seems to me that this new vote to extend the war until the end of September, (and let's face it, on October 1st, you will give him more money after some more theatrics, which you think are fooling the anti-war faction of your party) will feed right into the presidential primary season and you believe that if you just hang on until then, the Democrats will be able to re-take the White House. Didn't you see how "well" that worked for John Kerry in 2004 when he played the politics of careful fence sitting and pandering? The American electorate are getting disgusted with weaklings who blow where the wind takes them while frittering away our precious lifeblood and borrowing money from our new owners, the Chinese.

I knew having a Democratic Congress would make no difference in grassroots action. That's why we went to DC when you all were sworn in to tell you that we wanted the troops back from Iraq and BushCo held accountable while you pushed for ethics reform which is quite a hoot...don't' you think? We all know that it is affordable for you all to play this game of political mayhem because you have no children in harm's way...let me tell you what it is like:

You watch your reluctant soldier march off to a war that neither you nor he agrees with. Once your soldier leaves the country all you can do is worry. You lie awake at night staring at the moon wondering if today will be the day that you get that dreaded knock on your door. You can't concentrate, you can't eat, and your entire life becomes consumed with apprehension while you are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Then, when your worst fears are realized, you begin a life of constant pain, regret, and longing. Everyday is hard, but then you come up on "special" days...like upcoming Memorial Day. Memorial Day holds double pain for me because, not only are we supposed to honor our fallen troops, but Casey was born on Memorial Day in 1979. It used to be a day of celebration for us and now it is a day of despair. Our needlessly killed soldiers of this war and the past conflict in Vietnam have all left an unnecessary trail of sorrow and deep holes of absence that will never be filled.

So, Democratic Congress, with the current daily death toll of 3.72 troops per day, you have condemned 473 more to these early graves. 473 more lives wasted for your political greed: Thousands of broken hearts because of your cowardice and avarice. How can you even go to sleep at night or look at yourselves in a mirror? How do you put behind you the screaming mothers on both sides of the conflict? How does the agony you have created escape you? It will never escape me...I can't run far enough or hide well enough to get away from it.

By the end of September, we will be about 80 troops short of another bloody milestone: 4000, and MoveOn.org will hold nationwide candlelight vigils and you all will be busy passing legislation that will snuff the lights out of thousands more human beings.

Congratulations Congress, you have bought yourself a few more months of an illegal and immoral bloodbath. And you know you mean to continue it indefinitely so "other presidents" can solve the horrid problem BushCo forced our world into.

It used to be George Bush's war. You could have ended it honorably. Now it is yours and you all will descend into calumnious history with BushCo.

The Camp Casey Peace Institute is calling all citizens who are as disgusted as we are with you all to join us in Philadelphia on July 4th to try and figure a way out of this "two" party system that is bought and paid for by the war machine which has a stranglehold on every aspect of our lives. As for myself, I am leaving the Democratic Party. You have completely failed those who put you in power to change the direction our country is heading. We did not elect you to help sink our ship of state but to guide it to safe harbor.

We do not condone our government's violent meddling in sovereign countries and we condemn the continued murderous occupation of Iraq .

We gave you a chance, you betrayed us.

Sincerely,
Cindy Sheehan

Gold Star Families for Peace.

I quit the Pima Democrats after I tried to volunteer and could not
understand what they were trying to accomplish-they seemed rudderless.
I will vote Democrat before casting a vote for a republethug, but now I have to hold my nose to do it. As if it really matters who you vote for; if the Congress fails to impeach Gonzales, restore the rule of law and honest elections.

Anyhow, this is to let you know I understand what you did and why you did it. I love you for standing up for what's right. Keep on truckin...

Dear Ms. Sheehan,
Your sweet and "real" face is the one that launched the thousand ships of war protest and gave Americans a real look at a real person of conviction. I remember seeing your face and comparing it to the masks of all other public figures. I will miss you; I wish you success and peace and love; and I too want to help the "private Cindy". Take care of yourself and let us, other citizens, do the heavy lifting for a while.

Cindy,
You have demonstrated like no other tha ONE person can make a difference. You are my hero. Thank you. You have touched more hearts and minds than you will ever know! Don't give up--just get some rest and then decide your next move. You have a gift!

Hi Cindy:
I am a fan of your anti Iraq movement. Like you I and many were shocked at the Democrats betrayal.
I wish you would run for office or maybe more interviews on tv,radio.
I know your tired and disgusted .
This is still a Great America but perhaps its time people look at Independents who believe in what they believe.

There comes a time when the "lesser" of the evils is still an evil because be it Reps in Senate/Congress or Democrats nothing has changed only different empty speeches.

I wish you well .

Lia

Dear Cindy, You have been so good for so long. I remember the America you love. I hope it comes home soon. F**k the stupid Democrats! Spineless worthless jello muck.

Best wishes. Like Garrison Keillor says, "Be well, do good work." You have done such astoundingly SPLENDID work. I can't think of anyone in America I admire more. You and Lt. Watada and Michael Moore. Be well and know that you are loved.

God, I can't believe we're losing you! God, I can't believe we were so lucky to have you so long!

...if I keep typing, will you still be here?...my fingertips are trying to hold onto you...

With so much appreciation for a job so well done. I didn't think anything about this war would make me cry again, but I am. Be well, Kerstin

...year after year...

Well, I hope they're happy now. I'm an American first and a Democrat second; which means morality and ethics precede politics. I wonder what it feels like not to have any? Maybe the next fundraising movie should be called "Triumph Of The Jellyfish."

Hey, Cindy. If you should find that all those around you have failed, you're always welcome at my house. --Virg

I'm sick of "America" too. It isn't America anymore, you're right. Would you consider starting a new America, maybe at Camp Casey? Call it Cindiana? I would like to immigrate there. Thank you. Peace and love to you.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono started their own country, in their minds, when Nixon-America turned on them. They called it Nutopia.

Thank you, Cindy, for everything you have
done in the past few years to try and stop the carnage.

The kind of real solidarity you show is not
welcome in the twin party, corporate funded war machine
that lives off of the blood of our children, as you well know.

Take care, Linda Jansen

It's never been about party.

It's always been about right and wrong.

It's about your son.

My brothers in arms and in peace.

About justice, not just peace.

You and Casey.

Me, my son and my brother.

Men and Women.

Putting the kind in humanity.

Democrats never deserved you. What possessed you to ever believe in them in the first place is beyond me. Historically, Democrats started more wars than Republicans. They started Vietnam, mind you. They were the ones who committed one of greatest crimes against humanity by dropping two atomic bombs in Japan. Clinton himself bombed Iraq for 8 years, trying to provoke Saddam into a conflict with those no fly zones. And the economic embargoes that killed millions of children, etc. Democrats and Republicans are pieces of the same rotten cloth.

Now a few questions for you, you seem to be a smart woman. Did you ever try to persuade Casey not to join the military? Why in fact did he join? Did he kill any civilians in Iraq?

It's very noble to join the armed forces and defend a country in case of an unprovoked attack, etc., but knowing the long history of illegal wars and invasions the US has started in the last 60 years, joining the military today is the same as aspiring to become a contract killer. And contract killers deserve very little sympathy.

I understand galatea_doro's point about how many of us never had any confidence in the Democratic Party. But "doro" assumes that everyone has known what "doro" claims to have known, about the terrible, murderous history of US militaristic foreign policy....and therefore, "doro" seems to assert everyone who ended up in the military who fell for Bush's lies, or even the Democratic Party lies, is a contract killer. Even Casey.

("doro" writes... "knowing the long history of illegal wars and invasions the US has started in the last 60 years, joining the military today is the same as aspiring to become a contract killer. And contract killers deserve very little sympathy.")

Hey "doro"--maybe everyone isn't as smart as you---or doesn't/didn't know as much history as you or I. Does that make them "contract killers?" I have friends who joined the National Guard to get through college, (not expecting to go to war) because they come from low income families and don't have the luxuries that some upper-middle income protesters might have--they came back from Iraq---having not fired a shot but having witnessed civilians and friends killed---they came back very damaged and are now activists against the war. And you want to call them "contract killers?" And you dare to question Cindy Sheehan as to whether Casey killed any civilians? Or whether she, years ago, tried to persuade him to not go? The past is past---she has given so much to the movement. How many hours have you put into trying to rally hundreds of thousands of people to stop this war?

And by the way, it was the GI's who rebelled against the Vietnam War that had a much more powerful impact on ending that war than all the regular protestors on all the college campuses. And I write this as someone who was a full-time organizer for five years in the anti-Vietnam War movement and has been an anti-war activist for over 40 years.

The movement against militarism doesn't need the Democratic Party leaders....you are correct. The movement against militarism ALSO doesn't need the kind of arrogant, self-righteous attitude that is quick to condemn those who may have been misled, but who are honestly working to understand and change the world. That's a main factor that keeps so much of the "militant left" isolated from the people who can be won over to fight against the system. And I write this as someone who considers himself part of the "militant left".

We don't want fake unity with the Democratic Party leaders, but we do want unity with the millions of people who have been misled.

Dear Cindy,
Don't feel disheartened by mean people, although they are rampant. Mean people suck. That's my new bumpersticker.

You and I are so fortunate; we, in our perfection, can sit above everyone and judge them. Contract killer. Most people are simple pawns, controlled by the big lies of religion and patriotism. And the big liars love it when they can set us at each other's throats. Contract killer. You have a choice: spawn hate or love. Judgment spawns hate.

I'll call you Judge since you choose not to give us your name. Cindy is not an idiot, She is a Woman who lost something dear to her. Have you ever lost anything dear to you Judge? There's a lot of pain there and when We are subjected to someone else's pain it challenges us to look inside and try and find compassion for that person. Try that first Judge instead of calling someone an idiot.

Steve

Don't you think your bile, condescension, hatred and intolerance might be better focused elsewhere. You are some piece of work.

Don

It is not surprising that an idiot like this writer does not sign his/her name; cowards tend to be that way. I would try to answer your questions, but it wouldn't do any good. I am Christian, conservative, retired Army, and I have two sons currently serving in the military. What I taught my sons was that the Constitution of the United States is worth fighting to protect. I taught them that, even in a Representative Republic, people make stupid mistakes, but don't forsake the ideals of America because of those mistakes. We are a work in progress; and that is worth serving. If we all waited for perfection to offer our service we wouldn't have any hope at all. So, you sit back and reap the benefits of those who are willing to sacrifice, because cowards like you will always be with us. Your empty and meaningless questions will always be answered in the way patriots live, and you will never understand it. I don't agree with Cindy on all things, but she is a patriot who lives her beliefs; no matter the cost. What have YOU paid? I'd wager, nothing.
SFC Patrick Stevenson US Army Special Forces, Ret.

Millions of us do.

What I know is that your actions and essays not only lead and inspire but give a voice to all the sadness, frustration and anger we feel over the loss of our nation.

We must not give up.

Goodbye.

You are right, this and so many other important issues aren't about 'right' and 'left' or Democrats and Republicans. If anything, the division is between the arrogant rich and the working poor. Thank you so much for all your hard work and perseverance on behalf of Casey and all those who have or may yet die in this abomination of a war. You are a courageous, strong and beautiful human being, an inspiration to us all. Never take crap from anyone!

Michael in Oakland

Dear Cindy,
I just wanted you to know how many Hoosiers and Chicagoans you have affected. You have given so much as we have drawn on your strength these past years. You have carried an entire nation on your shoulders. Do not think for one moment that we are not appreciative. Please take some comfort and solace from the fact that you are truly loved by more people than anyone I know.

When you came to Indiana last month it meant so much to so many of us to see you and hear you speak. You may not have been a beacon for the Democratic Party, but you have been a beacon of truth for so many of us and we will be forever in your gratitude.

Several others have advanced the desire to help financially. If one of the organizations could set that up, many of us would like to help.

The sane members of a grateful nation thank you.
Nick Egnatz

Thank you Cindy. It's so easy for fickle, frustrated followers to turn on those whom they demand to act as their savior. They seemingly have little inkling the monstrous and crushing role they assign to someone who seeks simple justice and accountability.

That people would add to your grief and difficulty because of the very sense of justice that brought you to their attention to begin with is unconscionable. They cheer accountability so long as they, themselves, are not objects of that scrutiny. They claim to want justice, but in the end only allow a single-edged sword lest it cut both ways.

Please, please continue, in your own way, to advance that rare and steely sense of justice and accountability. I'll do the same, behind the scenes and hopefully one day, we'll cross paths and smile knowingly as we each continue realize our highest truth.

Despite, and for, ourselves and our fellow men and women. Thank you, Cindy, for Casey, for your unconquerable effort, for everything.

I am heartbroken--but unsurprised--by your retirement back into private life.

Though these past years must have been unbelievably hard, to you much credit is owed.

Live well, Cindy.

Hello Cindy,

My line name is ConcernedParent. I spoke with you once on "The Power" 169 on XM as a caller.

Cindy, all my friends and family would like for you to know that we feel if it wasn't for your consistency, honesty, and moral leadership and passion of all human beings who have the capacity to humanly embrace the difference between right and wrong.

Let's just say your efforts gave a voice and the ability for many other Americans to speak out against this illegal, immoral, and murderous occupation of the Iraqi people.

Thank you Cindy Sheehan for all you have done for the American people and the international community. You will always be honored in the minds and hearts of all good human beings in American and around the world.

Sincerely,

ConcernedParent :)

Cindy couldn't stay on message long enough to... now I'm off to Venezuela to talk to Hugo Chavez... be an effective focal point of a message Know what I mean, vern?

Cindy,

People who stand up to the Right are going to get smeared, and the divisiveness among the Left can be exhausting, but you should understand that there are millions of Joe Blows like me, who support the peace movement but do not participate in it daily, who always saw you as a catalyst for asking the right kinds of questions about Iraq. Anyone evenly remotely interested in the cause of getting the U.S. out of this wasteful, stupid war should give you respect for raising the profile of the peace movement, to which you have dedicated so much of your life. Your country owes you a debt--one of apology for the life of your son, the other of gratitude for giving yourself tirelessly so that others' sons may not die for nothing.

- Craig

I'm sorry, not only for your personal loss, not only that you (legitimately) feel betrayed, not only for the fact that your illness has cost you so dear, but for the failure of so many of your fellow Americans to take their duties as citizens seriously. It is possible to challenge power only if each of us takes a small burden. When one person takes too large a burden, it can easily become overwhelming.

As for the Democrats, we should never place our faith in human beings. Have faith in the truth, in love, in right and wrong, but not in politicians. Politicians must be coaxed, pressed, and occasionally evicted from office. My top choice for eviction is David Obey, basically a good man, but one who has been in office a very long time.

In any case, may joy come in the morning, and peace be with you always. And if you need help, don't hesitate to ask.

My wife and I came by and visited you in Texas. It was at the beginning. We still support you and we are so very sorry that the American public treated you so badly.

In my house you are a Hero. Thank you for everything you have done.

Cindy,
I've been amazed how you have been able to stand the slurs and attacks for so long. History will look kindly upon you! I am sure of it. Your decision is more than understandable.
I know millions wish you peace and send you love.

I wrote a piece on my blog yesterday which I think speaks to what has happened to our nation.
The Second American Revolution, Is it time yet?
I for one think it is way past due.
Time to get of the computers folks. Time to take to the streets.
