Soldier Benefit Barbecue
NBC-KSBY

This week, a Central Coast mother and father grieve the loss of their fallen soldier in very different ways.

Cathy Baker held a fundraiser Saturday, collecting donations to send care packages to American soldiers overseas.

Her son, 25-year-old Michael Mitchell was killed in Iraq in April 2004.

Michael's father spent the week in Crawford, Texas, with Cindy Sheehan, who's son died in the same incident as Michael Mitchell.

They're insisting the President send the American troops home.

Baker says her benefit has nothing to do with Sheehan's Vigil and that it's all about showing support.

"He volunteered that day and he actually died for his buddies," Baker says. "I'm continuing that by helping to support his buddies with local donations."

To donate to Baker's cause, you can call Sharon or Cathy at 237-3831 for drop off locations.

What is Baker's cause? If it is to aid the soldiers who are there, then that's understandable and, I think, a very good cause. (My brother-in-law is there.) But I worry that the target 'cause' somehow presupposes support for Bush's cause, which is something about which we are ignorant -- and precisely the question towards which Sheehan's 'cause' is directed.

I'm all for reporting both sides of this (or any other) newsworthy issue. What is sad is that there's no reporting, no question about exactly what the given 'cause' may be, etc. But I suppose that all of this (viz., my comment) is obvious.
