TRENTON, N.J. -- They held candles and flowers, waved a big peace symbol flag and sang such folk music classics as "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?"

About 70 people gathered Wednesday outside the War Memorial building for a candlelight vigil, one of several held across the nation and spurred by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier killed in Iraq. She has drawn widespread attention for the anti-war demonstration she has been staging near President Bush's ranch in Texas this month.

While most in the crowd in Trenton was strongly against the war and called for a quick end to the hostilities, others had mixed feelings.

Among them were Robert Moss, 82, of Trenton, who said he supports the war and wants the United States to win. However, he criticized Bush's unwillingness to meet with Sheehan, who has become the icon of the anti-war movement.

That caused Moss to travel to the War Memorial on Wednesday, holding a sign, saying "This World War II Veteran Supports Cindy Sheehan." He also lamented that the war has been terribly mismanaged, and that the Bush administration hasn't been honest with the nation.

"I see 'Support Our Troops' signs, but I don't see them being supported," Moss said.

For Jack Sade, 52, of Bordentown, who also protested the Vietnam War in his youth, Sheehan's story was a "focus" for renewed rallies against the war in Iraq, a war he believes to be as unjust as Vietnam.

"We got into this based on lies and we continue to spill large amounts of blood on a policy that is insane," Sade said.

Kate Esposito, 51, of Trenton, who helped organized the Trenton rally, thought support for Sheehan's protest is a sign that opposition to the war in growing in the country.

"This conflict has no end," she said. "It's very dangerous and it's based on fabrications."
