Sheehan decries "media circus," steers focus to anti-war message

By G. Robert Hillman
The Dallas Morning News

CRAWFORD, Texas — Bothered by what she laments as mounting "distractions," Cindy Sheehan sought yesterday to refocus her peace vigil near President Bush's ranch on her central anti-war message.

Since she "came out here and sat down on a lawn chair" 10 days ago, Sheehan, 48, said it's "got out of hand and just turned into a media circus."

For instance, she cited calls for the president's impeachment as "another distraction off of our original cause."

On Sunday, she faced reports that she was not paying her federal income taxes. "They killed my son in an illegal and immoral war," the Vacaville, Calif., woman told a reporter who asked, "and I don't feel like I owe them anything."

And yesterday, Reuters news service reported that her husband, Patrick Sheehan, filed to dissolve his marriage on Friday in Solano County Superior Court, according to records on the Web site of the local court in Northern California. Neither could be reached for comment.

Cindy Sheehan has been besieged not only by burgeoning numbers of her own supporters with all sorts of agendas of their own, but also by counter-demonstrators over the weekend — and on Sunday by an angry neighbor who fired a shotgun into the air near her camp.

"The media attention has been fabulous," she said at a news conference to introduce other military families opposing the war in Iraq. "We have finally gotten this war back on the front page and back in the headline news where it belongs."

Still, she said, she had stayed awake all night reviewing recent events and wished now to get back to the basics of her vigil — and her demand to meet with the president.

"I don't want to be distracted," she said. "Our message is to bring the troops home."

Sheehan lost her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, in Iraq last year, and has spent much of her time since then crisscrossing the country, demanding that Bush withdraw U.S. forces there.

Tomorrow, supporters are planning candlelight vigils across the country.

I know we can all have a good laugh at my expense in September,
but let's all keep a VERY watchful eye on these guys on these
FEMA drills. For some reason, I just don't trust them, especially after staying up all night last night watching "THE MEN WHO KILLED KENNEDY and THE MEN WHO KILLED KENNEDY-THE FINAL CHAPTER like someone suggested on the list. Damn!!! Sleep with the light on . . ;-)

Ms. Shee-han (after weeks of calling her "Cindy Sheean", the general media finally had to start pronouncing her name correctly once her ad was aired...) said in the article:

...On Sunday, she faced reports that she was not paying her federal income taxes. "They killed my son in an illegal and immoral war," the Vacaville, Calif., woman told a reporter who asked, "and I don't feel like I owe them anything."

I have great and many sympathies for Ms. Sheehan. There is no way I can imagine the heartache and frustration she is going thru. Above all else, she IS a grieving mother for which I give her all my respect. It is that grief factor, tho', that makes me wonder if she believes her grief puts her above the law? The war was/is not illegal (witness Congress allowed it to happen and has paid for it twice, so far). It is immoral in the sense that all war is immoral due to the loss of innocent life ("Thou shalt not kill"). It is only "illegal" in the minds of those who do not agree with this administration or war in general. It is only "illegal" in the minds of those who feel the administration took children away from their mothers and forced those children to "kill or be killed", ignoring the fact that those "children" made a deliberate decision to fight for their country and voluntarily signed on for duty. Some consider those same children to have been brain-washed, somehow. How sad that those people would rather believe soldiers sign-on blindly instead of w/conscious, rational thought. In many, many cases, it's the first mature decision those soldiers ever made.

But, I digress...Again, keeping in mind I am as distressed about the death of her son as any person could be, I'd like you to read her above statement and ask yourself if you do you not see the saddest of ironies? Cindy Sheehan would equate the life of her son w/the taxes she owes the rest of the country. The rest of the country paid part of its taxes in order to support her son, the soldier, while he fought in the name of the United States of America, for the ideals and visions of that same country so that others might share in our wealth, prosperity, opportunities and ability to give back and to hand out. He fought for the very right for his mother to sit in front of the United State's President's home and make her sad but ill-advised cause known.

I couldn't do that to the memory of any member of my family if they were to perish in the same way as did Casey.

While I firmly believe that in America, a person or organization
is "innocent" until proven "guility" . . .

. . . The main things I wish to go to trial are:

1. Violation to the International Geneva conventions to instigate a
war of "Aggression". IF it pans out that BushCo deliberately
falsified the "intelligence" to make a case for war, both the
United States and the United Kingdom stand in violation.

2. In the war in Irag, the US military and "contractors/mercenaries"
are accused of using "Napalm" style weapons that have also been
declared illegal by the Geneva Conventions (as well as radioactive
"Depleted Uranium" weapons which is just stupid.)

3. On the domestic front, IF BushCo deliberately lied to Congress
to get them to support a War, that is an impeachable offense
under "High Crimes and Misdemeanors".

4. And IF our worst fears are actualized, and 9/11 was a
"Operation Northwoods" type "False Flag" operation orchestrated by
a shadow Triumvirate of the USA's CIA, the UK's MI5, and Israel's
MOSSAD intelligence agencies then this would be illegal because
it would mean the "murder" of over 3000 innocent civilians for the
"just and noble cause" of tricking the American Public into
going to war . . . the NEO CONs refer to this as "Another Peral Harbor."

5. Torture is a crime against humanity.

Hmmm, somehow a teenager smoking a doobie and listening to Pink Floyd just doesn't seem like that much of a crime, now does it?

As I'm short on time, I'd like to reply to #3 for the moment...

Just a few short quotes illustrating there were others who believed Saddam needed to be ousted...way before GW Bush's time in office...

Claim: Quotes reproduce statements made by Democratic leaders about Saddam Hussein's acquisition or possession of weapons of mass destruction.

Status: True.

Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2003]

"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line."
President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998.

"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program."
President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998.

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face."
Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998.

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others Oct. 9, 1998.

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998.

Everyone in power back then had access to the same info as Pres. Bush and, yet, he's being labeled a liar and a murderer now. Please, won't somebody tell me why the folks quoted here don't deserve the same?

If I am following you, it seems that you are trying to draw an argument down party lines, "Why attack the Republicans when the
Democrats were saying the same thing?" Am I close?

I guess what comes to my mind is, "Who is to say that a 'Democrat'
can't be a PNAC NEO CON Supporter?" Hell, it was mostly "Democrats" that made up the KKK group that ran me and my wife from our home last
year.

I guess I feel that there was a Conservative Power-Shift
in the Democratic Party with Lyndon B Johnson that has continued to
grow and grow. Perhaps this was a result of the propaganda of the
cold war or the result of the political clout of the military-Industrial-Pharmaceutical-Complex, but I feel that comparing a
Pre-World War II Democrat with a Post-World War II Democrat is like
talking apples and oranges, especially in the southern states.

So, what if, completely hypothetical mind you, there is a cabal of
"Power Men" that have turned their backs on the very foundation of this country that "WE THE PEOPLE" have a natural right to live
FREE and that "ALL MEN (humans) ARE CREATED EQUAL" and have instead
bought into the Fascist notion that "The Dominant Have the Right to
Rule over the conquered?" The "Supermen." What if these men feel
that the country/world should be run like a corporation and NOT be run
by democratically elected governments of the People?

That is the "TRUTH" that I am searching for and wish exposed.
I have no hatred of Bush, I feel sorry for the kid. I just feel
that if the above holds true, this cabal of dysfunctional
patriarchal males is destroying the chances of our "Pursuit of Happiness" based on some very bad 19th century pseduo-science.

Nope. Party lines are verboten in this particular message.

But, to reply to your assumption...which one of those particular folks that I quoted (Clinton, Clinton, Pelosi, etc.) have done ANY changing of parties or touted their being a "PNAC NEO CON Supporter"? (PS: Sorry to hear about the harassment you rec'd. Are you pursuing anything legal against them?)

To answer your hypothetical "What if", do you mind if I give you a hypothetical answer?

Now, back to my question: Why aren't any of the folks I quoted being lambasted, libeled and slandered the way Pres. Bush is/has been???

PS: Refresh my memory please: Was the term "NeoCon" being used in 1998 (when those quotes were made)?

Thanks,

Depleted Uranium rounds are not radioactive. That's why they are called DEPLETED.

Depleted Uranium Weapons -
Does it mean "NON-radioactive" or just "acceptable levels" of
radioactivity? I concede that this is not my area of expertise. ;-)

I am seeing a LOT of reports coming out concerning the secondary
health risks of these type munitions, especially in the areas
of cancer and birth defects.

Also, I have heard that several states have gone against the Federal
"Trust Us, this stuff is safe" policies and have begun their
own state level studies on the health of returning military personnel.
I will be very interested in the results of these studies.

Again, I personally feel that the use of these type of munitions is
stupid . . . but that's just me. ;-)

peace.
