My Minute with Randi

Democrats.com
Bob Fertik's blog

I just had the enormous pleasure of spending a minute on the air with the Goddess of Radio, Randi Rhodes.

I was at the gym (working on my "balanced life") when I heard Randi offering a ringing personal defense of me against Sunday's attack on Meet the Press by Byron York of the rightwing National Review. So I ran home and called the show and they put me on the air to respond to York's attack.

Mr. York: ... the White House knows that the only person who can really damage her credibility is Cindy Sheehan herself. She took part in a conference call I think on Wednesday, which I listened to. It was moderated by Joe Trippi, the Democratic strategist, and another Democratic strategist, Bob Fertig [sic], of a Web site called...

MS. MITCHELL: This was a conference call with bloggers. So she was...

MR. YORK: Exactly.

MS. MITCHELL: ...setting off another storm about...

MR. YORK: Of a site called Democrats.com. And she said--she thanked her anti-war bloggers for all their support. She said, "Thank God for the Internet. Without it, we'd already be a fascist state because one party controls everything, and the mainstream media is the propaganda tool of the government."

Now, this is the kind of rhetoric that you normally associate with fringe elements on the left. And if she does more of that, I think she'll diminish her own credibility.

Randi asked me what I thought, and I said York is crazy if he thinks Democrats.com or anyone else is controlling Cindy Sheehan. Cindy's words come straight from her heart, and her heart was broken by her son's death in Iraq.

Randi mentioned the changing rationales for the war, and I pointed out that the Busheviks had originally called it "Operation Iraqi Liberation," until the American people realized that spelled OIL. So then they changed it to "Operation Iraqi Freedom." I suggested to Randi that they should change it one more time - to Operation Iraqi F*Up. (I took great care to only pronounce the "F" so Air America wouldn't get fined.)

This TV attack was just like York's attack on Cindy and me in the National Review, which I blogged about on Thursday.

Obviously Cindy's warning about a "fascist state" is right on the mark and therefore scaring the hell out of the GOP - or York wouldn't be running around denouncing it.

In my blog last week, I challenged York to debate "the 14 points of fascism" but I haven't received a reply. Let's keep writing!

This is a very important debate right now...people are not thinking of the consequences of blinding supporting the government's actions...a president is not the country.... it is loyalty to the country that is important....not the leader of the country....

If Bush meets with Cindy, then I expect him to meet with EVERY single American that has a concern to express to him. And I mean EVERY American. Nobody should be left out. If one person gets to talk to Bush, everybody should. Also, if Cindy gets to speak to Bush all other politicians and corporate leaders should follow the example. The Constitution should also be ammended to state that the president must meet with any American that desires a personal meeting. This ammendment could actually be an extenstion of the one that requires the State of the Union Address. It's not so crazy. The internet is a very powerful tool that could be used for scheduling requests.

If the President meets with people who contribute $25,000 at a fundraiser, why can't he meet with Cindy or perhaps people who don't contribute also. Every one of us. Why do we have to contribute to hime to meet with him?

I have an idea. Lets scrape a hundred thousand dollars together and hand it to Cindy to donate to Bush, in person. We already seen him crawl out of his hole for money, so this should work. And as we all know, every mouse trap needs some cheese. $$$

If Cindy Sheehan was a mother who lost her son in Iraq, but still praised the president, this would be a great photo op for him. He would have her on Fox news in no time flat.

Bush won't meet with Cindy because he needs Karl Rove to tell him what to say, he is not smart enough to answer her questions himself.
He has told so many lies, he cant remember them all.

A lame and weak excuse the Repug....are pushing, if he meets with cindy he then has to meet with every American, this might work if you are speaking to other Repug. However this will not work when you are speaking to clear minded thinking people.SHE LOST HER SON IN A WAR THAT WE NOW KNOW IS A LIE. She has the right to speak to the president.

Would you prefer that she raised $100,000 as a RANGER then she can meet with the president. oops sorry I guess her son's life does not mean much to this president. GO Cindy God Bless.....

Look "independent Chris" if you are the type of independent like another self-proclaimed independent I know of....Bill O' Reilly...then you have little regard for the amount of anguish a parent would feel for the loss of their child. Such a sacrifice for the sake of a lot of lies should make any patriots blood boil! I get almost ill every time I hear of more casualties, yet you write placations about fairness to all if one person gets a meeting. If Bush had even an iota of humanity in him, he would try to lessen the suffering of an American such as Cindy or any other citizen bereaved by his war. It would actually have a positive effect on his credibility if he showed some balls. But this president hasn't got the capacity to admit he was wrong, therefore, he couldn't have anything to say to Cindy. He knows Saddam wasn't a threat, has known it all along...I bet you haven't looked into the Downing St. memos much, have you? Your argument for all presidents to be required to speak to any or all citizens for any reason is just another puff of smoke just like the kind right wing pundits like to blow up the (all too) receptive arses of their devoted listeners.

I do have compassion. I also agree that the country originally went to war for false reasons. I also believe that her son did not die for a noble cause. However, I do not feel that a person should be entitled to a personal meeting with the President of the USA just because they make a big public scene. I dont care if the president is a Democrat, Republican, or whatever. There are more professional and sane ways to get your voice heard. Also, Cindy is by no means the only person to suffer a hardship as a result of this administration. Just think of all of the people who have died and who will die because of the laws in place against stem cell research. People will always suffer from EVERY administration's decisions. So, if Bush talks with Cindy, he and every other president must do so with every person who has suffered an admistration-inflicted hardship.

I don't understand how when this president brought us into a war under false pretenses, that this is not seen as treason? Isn't treason a crime?

Dear Cindy:
Bless you for your courage, strength, and empathy. Your family and friends must be so proud of you, those with you and those who have passed.
Although I am so grateful for your courage to stand up to this war, I would much, much rather your child were alive and well. What I wouldn't give for one more soldier coming home safe and sound, alive and well, in exchange for all the protesting in the world. I have been writing letters in protest because of this heartache that I cannot possibly comprehend.
I am so sorry for your loss, and know that it is our loss as well. This war must end for you, for all the families out there, and ultimately, for the nation.
Your vision, strength, and tenacity are visible to the whole world, even if George Bush ignores you. I send you my hopes and good thoughts as you go through this painful, difficult time. I just hope that you receive all the blessings you need, the hope to endure, and the resources to prevail in your quest.

Sincerely,
Karen Aschenbrenner
Sacramento, CA

Cindy has already made her contribution...her son's death.

I think we should scrape together $100,000 and hand it to Cindy to donate to George, in person. Every mouse trap needs some cheese.

Hey Mr. Fertik,

When you were talking with Randi Rhodes did you get a chance to ask her if she will give some of her salary back to poor kids and Alzheimer's Patients that Air American stole from?

Also did she get the environmentally friendly corporate jet that she requested so she doesn't have to "spend all day traveling" to take her to Crawford so she can boost her ratings glomming onto Sheehan's remarkable press coverage?
