One-Pager for Lobbying Congress for Peace and Accountability

Use this to prepare for talking with your Congress Member and Senators and their staff, and then leave them a copy of it. Word versions: House, Senate.

Here's a Word doc with membership of relevant committees.

A Majority of Americans Want the U.S. Out of Iraq and Officials Held Accountable for Their Actions

The peace movement has been right since before the war began, and should be listened to now about how to end this war and prevent future ones. The peace movement includes the majority of Americans, who have told pollsters they oppose the war and who voted accordingly on Nov. 7, 2006. Support for sending additional troops to Iraq is extremely low. A majority of Americans and of active-duty troops in Iraq want all U.S. troops out of Iraq by the end of 2007.

There is no strategy for an American "victory" in Iraq. Congress must take effective action to bring the troops home on a rapid timetable and to prevent future wars. We welcome symbolic statements of opposition to the Bush policy. However, Congress must use the "power of the purse" to bring this war to a conclusion. There should be no funding of the war unless tied to a specific plan for rapid withdrawal. This applies to the forthcoming $100 billion "supplemental" request, and any other requests.

It is high time this war was investigated, beginning with how we got into it. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the so-called WMD Commission have both done investigations and produced reports, but both were barred from addressing the central question of whether the Bush administration had presented the intelligence honestly. We need that investigation to prevent future wars.

HOUSE

It is time for political solution in Iraq -- which will only become viable after U.S. troops disengage from Iraq. For almost four years, Congress has given President Bush free reign to set policy in Iraq. That policy has clearly failed time and time again. It is time for Congress to play a more active role on Iraq.

We call upon congress to:
• take effective action to bring the troops home on a rapid timetable and to block a future war in Iran
• back up symbolic statements of opposition to the Bush policy with measures with ‘teeth’
• use its “power of the purse” to bring this war to an end
• reject all funding of the war unless tied to a specific plan for rapid withdrawal
• investigate this war including the misuse of intelligence which led us into the war

Specifically we ask YOU to:

Stop Funding This War and Bring the Troops Home
• Vote no on the upcoming supplemental spending bill. Support amendments that add conditions to the spending in case the bill does pass.
• Cosponsor H.R. 508, the Bring the Troops Home and Iraqi Restoration Act (Woolsey, Lee and Waters) that would bring the troops home within 6 months, while providing economic aid and a framework for stability.
• Cosponsor the “Safe and Orderly Withdrawal Act,” (McGovern) which would use appropriated funds for an orderly withdrawal of all troops from Iraq.
• Co-Sponsor H.J. Res. 18 (Murtha) calling for the redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq “at the earliest possible date” and an “over-the-horizon presence” of U.S. Marines in the region.”
• Co-sponsor H.R. 455 “Protect the Troops and Bring Them Home Act” (Nadler) calling for the safe and orderly withdrawal of U.S. soldiers from Iraq to be completed no later than 12/31/07.

Investigate the Case Made for This War and the Way it Has Been Conducted
• Investigate the misuse of intelligence and fraud by the White House in making the case for this war. (Intelligence and Government Reform Committees)
• Investigate waste, fraud, and misuse of funds, including in launching the war in secret, and in construction of permanent bases. (Government Reform, Appropriations and Armed Services Committees)
• Investigate war crimes, extraordinary rendition, and torture. (Judiciary, Armed Services, Veterans Affairs Committees)

Prevent a New War with Iran
• Cosponsor H.J.Res.14 (Jones), to prevent the President from attacking Iran without specific congressional approval

Block any Escalation of the war
• Cosponsor H.R. 353 (Markey) to prohibit the use of funds to increase the number of U.S. forces in Iraq above the number which existed as of January 9, 2007, without specific authorization from Congress.

Very well done, but I would add 2 things.

1. Investigate to Impeach if it is determined that the President and his administration did in fact conspire to defraud the American People and Congress into supporting his invasion of Iraq.

2. Support legislation outlawing war profiteering.

good ideas

I think it is good and right, not just bush, but his entire Administration.
I am wearing my Impeachbush.org sweatshirt now and have recently read an article in a local newspaper that some people were arrested for wearing shirts such as mine, so i will just wear it here at home to be safe, as i am not comfortable about jail things, but still want bush to get his.
I have an excuse, such as it is, in that I have disability which is caused by a back problem and includes pinched nerves and i have to stay in bed a lot and take pain killers.
Also, i am small, short, and scared of everything. Doubt if that would keep me from being arrested, but there it is.
I can talk, so maybe that would work.

WE ARE A NATION OF LAWS. This is what we are told from the first remembrances of CIVIC COOPERATION. WE ARE A NATION OF LAWS. We are conditioned to follow the laws of our communities, respectively. We are taught that hard working, honest, people that FOLLOW THE LAW are rewarded, and people that BREAK THE LAWS suffer consequences.
This band of TREASONOUS CRIMINALS have lied to get AMERICA into an ILLEGAL INVASION of A SOVERIEGN NATION, that had absolutely nothing to do with TERRORISM, PERIOD. They have set it up so that AMERICAN TAXPAYER MONIES are distributed amongst SENIOR ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS by way of awarding NO BID CONTRACTS to the very companies that those EXECUTIVES were in charge of just prior to them taking their respective positions in this current administration.
This administration has TOTALLY DISCARDED OUR CONSTITUTION, and attempted to implement laws that will undoubtedly be found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL.
This administration has constantly INTRUDED into the personal lives of ordinary citizens, breaking so many of our laws that one would have to consult an attorney just to know where to begin.
All of this and I haven't even gotten to THE OATH that these CRIMINALS all took to hold their respective positions in this current administration, which actually charges each and every one of those TRAITORS with the task of PROTECTING AND DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION, not the PEOPLE, or THE CORPORATIONS.
Now I will add to the CULMINATION of CRIMES. That which is the most DISPICABLE.
The amount of AMERICAN BLOOD, which at last count stood at 2842 soldiers killed in action, not to mention the IRAQI BLOOD, which depending on whatever poll you choose to believe, ranges from approximately 45,000 INNOCENT CIVILIANS to over 600,000(IRAQI) people killed, pouring over the hands of those EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS of this CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.
This BAND of TREASONOUS CRIMINALS cannot be allowed to ESCAPE from OUR LAWS without being held ACCOUNTABLE for the crimes they have committed against the AMERICAN PEOPLE. They must also be made to stand for the HORRIFIC ATROCITIES committed against the country of IRAQ. IT IS TIME FOR IMPEACHMENT. AFTER ALL WE ARE A NATION OF LAWS.

Very well stated! All about power and greed, class distinction, eliminating the middle class, King George re-incarnated?

I love your rant.
Well spoken.
I am going to steal it and post it to congress.org

Perhaps I can affix the link to a petition to impeach as well.

It seems this administration is above the law. If any ordinary citizen cheats, lies, etc. seems to go to jail for a length of time. But, when voted officials (due to tampered elections) they then should be tried in court, fined and sent to jail. No man/woman should be above the law at any level. May be send our present elected officals to Iraq and let them mingle with the people and help set up there governement- Bush, Channey, Rove, Rice- few if any served this country in the military. At the present rate this country is going I doubt this country can survive. I believe the ordinary voter wants this man impeached.

Nick has the right idea on outlawing War profiteering. We should also add investation on Corporate businesses that are making big money on this war.

That is why the Wilson/Plame case is dragging along for so many months and years. He found that Niger was NOT selling Uranium to produce WMD to Iraq. Cheney got pissed and down the line of command- Michael Ledeen was put in charge of hiring a thief (Rocco Martino, ex Italian CIA agent) to break into the Rome embassy for Niger, steal their stationary and official seal and make up the phony document that was first sent to Tony Blair and then to us.
Read about it on bellaciao.com blog. He even has copies of the doc.

The entire war was based on profiteering. Everyone involved in the "Project for a New American Century" is making tons of money on this war and the World Bank is able to add the finishing touches to their fractal banking accounts to take their next step in world power.

Barb Heiam-Bjornsen, Scottsdale, AZ

We have to stop this administration commiting more and more crimes.
IMPEACHMENT IS THE ONLY ANSWER.

An excellent case for ending torture/rendition/etc. on the basis of pragmatism (though such a case should not even have to be made in the US because ethical arguments should be enough!) is made in "What Terrorists Want" by Louise Richardson, who argues that the anger brought about by the torture of others can be used to convince people to join the terrorists.

I seem to recall that our constitution REQUIRES the congress to initiate impeachment proceedings when there is evidence that High Crimes may have been committed. They have a DUTY to do this, don't they?

With the old Republican-guard US Congress, duty was not a high priority, I'm afraid, Merg. I only hope that with the "new" Democratic leadership, duty will reign. I, for one, will be working hard to hold their feet to the fire, for we have put our trust in them. Yes, it is their duty to uphold the US Constitution, and yes, Congress is required to initiate impeachment IF they have hard evidence that High Crimes have been committed.

Let's work for a happy and honest new year in 2007.

Professor Nan Fandel

A Cheney Free America Arrest These Men NOW!

Merg, I agree - ABSOLUTELY!!

The Democrats are unwilling to put impeachment 'on the table' for reasons such as 'bipartisan collegiality', legislative efficiency, or fear of appearing vindictive.

I am sure that, from the viewpoint of 'political process' all their arguments are likely correct. It is so much easier to "just get on with living" and "deal with the nuts & bolts" while ignoring the 'inconvenient facts' that might complicate a collegial, bipartisan effort to 'heal the rifts that have divided our two great parties' (gag) than to take on the unpleasant and potentially unproductive process of dealing with the events that have occurred in our body politic over the last six (or, indeed 14) years.

There are, however, other issues that must also be considered. Among some of the 'realistic' - 'down to earth' issues are whether the Democrats will be able to accomplish any of their "progressive" agenda at all. After all, any bill passed by a simple majority in Congress - which is all the Democrats can muster - can be vetoed by Bush - and he still maintains an essentially "veto-override-proof" Republican minority. Consequently, as has been the case since 1992, all the progressive good wishes from Congress (minimum wage, single-payer health care, government oversight, you name it) are all pie in the sky hopes based on the unsubstantiated wishful thought that, somehow, the results of the midterm elections will have altered Bush's agenda and he'll just blithly sign bills that are utterly contrary to his philosophy without so much as a signing statement. That this kind of thinking is delusional is brought into sharp focus by Bush's own delusional interpretation of the midterms as support for more troops and a military victory in Iraq!

Another 'realistic' issue is that Bush is still Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and does not need a 'by your leave' from anyone to order more troops into Iraq or air & missile attacks on North Korea or Iran. I understand that Congress can attempt to cut off funding for such event (if they're given sufficient notice and don't end up reading about air attacks on Iran that occurred the night before in their morning paper) but, again there's that vexing veto issue.

I'm sure there are other "realistic" reasons to impeach Bush but those are sufficient.

Couched in theses terms the issue might be more succinctly stated as not whether we should try to impeach Bush but whether we can afford not to try.

There is another issue however that, in time, will transcend these "realistic" issues, particularly for some of us "progressives", and that will be the criterion by which the future judges our actions. It is the issue of Social Justice. Frankly, I am boggled that anyone is able (although I know they are) to look at the crimes committed by Bush and his administration and not feel utterly compelled to seek redress.

To Wit:

Based on an extreme philosophy promoted by the PNAC (from whence Bush populated his 1st administration) in the 1990's advocating the overthrow of the Iraqi government in order to control the resources of the Middle East, Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfeld utilized the 9/11 tragedy to create a conspiracy to defraud Congress and the American people (a felony), and lied to Congress (another felony), in order to justify an otherwise unjustifiable attack on Iraq (a war crime) which has led to the deaths of more than half a million Iraqis (according to the Hopkins data) - a crime against humanity - and has also led to the deaths of nearly 3000 American soldiers, 600 American contractors, and several hundred soldiers from the so-called "coalition of the willing" (murder?). In addition, thousands of troops (American and others) have been physically and mentally maimed. In the process, Bush and the GOP-led Congress (abetted by pliant "progressive Democrats") removed the Constitutional protections of Habeas Corpus and altered the Posse Comitatus provisions so as to allow the use of American soldiers to police American citizens.

Conspiracy? War Crimes? Crimes Against Humanity? Crimes against the Constitution? Murder?

We're not talkin' chopped liver here (or stained blue dresses either)...

Just as we (rightly) demanded justice for the Iraqis killed by Saddam Hussain (recognizing that it may not have been delivered with his execution), the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed since Hussain was deposed also demand justice. Americans who have given their lives or the lives of their loved ones for lies and deceit deserve justice. How can we hold ourselves up to the world as a repository of justice and law if we are unwilling to take on the challenge of cleaning our own house? Are we just going to let the whole issue die?

Is it futile? Perhaps. But it is imperative that the world, and our children, know that we didn't just roll over, that we did recognize injustice, that we did name it, and that we did try to cleanse ourselves of it.

Impeachment may sound like a good idea, however, if Bush is impeached then Cheney would be president and I can't think of a worst thing to have happen. Bush does need to be held accountable for all of the crimes he has committed in the name of "Saving us from terrorists" in the wrong country, But it needs to be done after the bigger threat of being Led by Cheney is past. After he leaves office and we are safe from Cheney who has already had far too much influence, then both of them can be brought up on charges of treason and conspiracy to defraud the American people. Then War Crimes can be added and whatever else anyone can think of.

Bush AND Cheney need to be impeached. That would make Pelosi the President, which I have no problem with because she couldn't get there without having helped impeach the bastards and anyone who impeaches them can't be all bad. She certainly can't do anything in office that could be as bad or worse than what they have wrought on us and Iraq in the past six years. First female Speaker of the House AND the first female President all within the same year?!?!?! That works for me. Bush needs to be held accountable, for sure, but so does Cheney. Which one is the ventriloquist and which is the dummy? I say investigate 9/11 and the lies to start the war in Iraq and it will be more than enough to impeach them both. 9/11 was deliberate and it was with their knowledge and consent or it was orchestrated entirely by Bush and Cheney and probably Rummy and Rice, too. I know that they are responsible for 9/11 regardless what the level of their involvement turns out to be when the truth is revealed about it, which could be very soon if they will just start an objective and real investigation now. There is so much smoke around 9/11 there has to be a blazing inferno behind it. Too many things that don't at all add up until your common sense kicks in and leads to the only conclusion you can possibly arrive at: they did it. They did it and they have worked under a cloak of secrecy and blocked any/all of the attempts to conduct an unbiased and thorough investigation into 9/11 ever since 9/11 to cover their involvement. They needed it to make sure that there wouldn't be an honest count of votes because, as we all know, that would have meant the winner, the person we elected to be our President, would have been in office instead of the loser, who we didn't elect to be our president, wouldn't have the power to wage a war in the middle east, shred the Bill of Rights and spit on the Constitution he never intended to protect or defend, let people in New Orleans cling to their rooftops for a week starving, thirsty and dying --"Great job, Brownie!!". He wouldn't have been able to run the deficit up into the trillions or profiteer off of the war he would start in Iraq, or set up torture camps for those he would be falsely imprisoning indefinitely never charged with crimes and not ever found to be guilty of anything, give the wealthiest few huge tax cuts while excluding the other 99% of citizens, passing a drug benefit that benefits none of the Medicare patients it affects, or try to dismantle Social Security benefits, or claim to be Christian to get the radical evangelical vote based on their concept of what the right to life really is not (has nothing to do with pre- life in the womb but has everything to do with the right to live past your 21st birthday in a peaceful world instead of dying in an illegal war started by a cowardly dictator who hid behind daddy's money when he was drafter to fight in Vietnam and his partner in crime who got 5 count 'em FIVE deferrments to shirk his duty to America in Vietnam).

So, realistically, once we see that 9/11 was an inside job which has to make Bush the only terrorist America needed to worry about from the beginning and since; Bush is known to the world as a terrorist. He and Cheney used 9/11 to distract us from the fact he stole power through criminal acts and as an excuse to attack Iraq -- a plan that was in motion before he even took up squatting in the White House. Those two facts are more than enough to establish treason and crimes for which they should both should be sentenced to prison for as long as the law will allow.

Your entire article regarding bush and cheney's evil actions beginning with bush's illegal rise to power and subsequent involvement in 9/ll is right on the money. Of course, bush and chaney falsified information to commence invasion of Iraq. They are the terrorists and the most dangerous of individuals to our great country.
Something must be done before they force us into Iran and cause another 9/ll of greater tragedy than what the american people have witnessed so far.

If the democrates do not start to move and take action then I truly believe America will be completely lost.

Democracy is dead! The Constitution, especially the First Amendment, have all but disappeared. We must begin the impeachment process based on the Eighth Amendment. The First Amendment, while violated and almost erased from our Constitution, is to wide for interpretation. The Eighth Amendment calls for no "cruel and unusual punishment".use this as a foundation for the impeachment process due to crimes against humanity. Then add the Geneva Convention and all the International violations this Administration has impacted upon humanity. "occupying forces must provide PROPER medical care for the population of the invaded country". With this alone the dictator and his vice dictator can be impeached. The issue is what will Congress do? I believe in the following weeks they will see how the veto pen is used on ALL legislation concerning Iraq. Then, not only they, but the American people will see we don't have a "beloved" president but instead a true dictator. He hung one dictator and is currently buying the rope to hang himself. He proved this with his State of the Union Address. Nothing new was said that has not been said before and for the first time in six years he realized there is something called "domestic policy". He continued in his tradition of be an ego-maniac and a liar(which he has done very well since the start of his rule). He will be gone before 2008 if we the people keep the heat on Congress. Letters, phone calls all make a difference. Email,as a result of S.1 Section 220 which thanks to a Republican was amended, Act 20, will not be listened to . So show up at rallies, sign petitions, and put an end to the DICTATOR!
