Sympathy for grief, not necessarily Cindy Sheehan's cause

If you are a mother who grieves for a child killed in the war on terror, what would you say to President Bush?

By John Cramer
The Roanoke Times (Virginia)

Roanoke Valley residents expressed sympathy for a military mother camped outside President Bush's Texas ranch, but they differed on whether the commander-in-chief should meet with the antiwar protester.

"He should, but my hunch is he'll ignore her," said Eli Fishpaw of Rockbridge Response, a peace and justice group based in Rockbridge County. "It really helps [the antiwar movement] to have military families against the war, but the Bush people have mastered the technique of ignoring people."

Dave Lalush of Botetourt County, whose Marine son Michael was killed in Iraq, said he supports people's right to protest, including Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a fallen U.S. soldier holding a peace vigil near Bush's ranch.

But Lalush said he and his wife, Becky, are troubled by those who say they support the troops but oppose the war. Lalush, whose son was Western Virginia's first casualty of the war in Iraq, said his family supports the war because his son supported it.

"It's pretty upsetting" to have military families against the war effort, Lalush said. "I can understand their views, but for us they don't go together."

Lalush said the president should meet with Sheehan, who has vowed to remain at her makeshift campsite until Bush's vacation ends later this month.

"She's seems very intelligent and maybe she can bring a different view to the president," he said.

Roger Talmadge, whose three Army sons are involved in Iraq, said the president should not meet Sheehan but should send an Army chaplain or an administration official to offer her emotional support.

"I have compassion for that dear woman, but all you can do is just listen to her and offer her condolences, not listen to her political views, but support her personal loss," said Talmadge, who has one son who served in Iraq, another son who is there now and another son who is bound for there or Afghanistan.

Talmadge, who served two Army combat tours in Vietnam, is president of the Team Virginia Military Family Support Center in Roanoke.

"I hate war," he said. "I've looked at the enemy, dead, and my heart was broken because their mother will never see them again. But what she [Sheehan] rages on is not important. It's her hurt that's important. Someone needs to listen to her."

Nell Lancaster, a member of Rockbridge Response, said Sheehan's efforts could reinvigorate the antiwar movement.

"My heart goes out to her," she said. "I really admire what she's doing. I find her story appeals to people beyond the politics of the war. It's easy to lose sight of the human realities of war," including the deaths of Iraqi civilians as well as U.S. troops.

Lancaster said Bush likely will not meet with Sheehan.

"He's demonstrated an enormous stubbornness," said Lancaster, who considered joining the growing number of protesters camped out beside Sheehan. "This is reaching a whole new layer of Americans who don't see any progress toward a reasonable conclusion to the war. It really inspires people. She's an activist, but at the same time it's very personal."

Lalush said declining U.S. public support for the war effort reflects the media's emphasis on casualties instead of reconstruction efforts and democracy-building in Iraq.

He said his son and other American troops will have died in vain if the United States abandons Iraq.

"In Vietnam, they used to say a soldier got 'wasted' - not just his death, but his life in general," Lalush said. "Well, that's not true today in Iraq. They're dying for a good cause."

What kind of psycho uses the death of their child as political capital for a freak anti-israel anti-USA (i wont pay taxes) political tyrade?

OK, nutcase don't pay your taxes- and stop using our roads, librarys, water systems, sewer systems etc. etc. etc.

But I thought not paying taxes was one of the major objectives of Republicans and conservatives in general. Here in Minnesota, Governor Pawlenty is so afraid to violate his no tax pledge, he calls them fees, surcharges, etc., anything but taxes. Why can't Cindy call her son's death what she likes: some say Casey Sheehan's life was a noble sacrifice, she says it's a tax. I think whatever it is called it is a transaction in blood money.

Now, I suggest you pay your own taxes quietly, enlist in the Marine Corps like I did, go to Iraq as a lowly Grunt, and wait to see first hand how America and her sunshine patriots will pay you for your tax-I mean sacrifice.

Semper Fi, Mac.

You are an honor to the Marine Corps and to Minnesota.

I 100% agree - this is all about CINDY, not about her son. For him, she is probably a disgrace.

Find a bridge.

I can't believe you asume you would might know how a certain person would feel about thier mothers actions... For amny people she is not a discrace. She is a hero. Finaly speaking out for the majority of the public that has for the most part not had enough balls to challange the bush regeim. She is simply the majority voice of the people. She is bringing to light the many mistakes of this administration that must be looked at in order to make sure we learn from and understand our failures, so something like this never happens again...

What kind of nut uses his political capital to drop cluster bombs and napalm in a "shock and awe" campaign against innocent people?

And please don't tell me about 9/11. Iraqis had nothing to do with that. Even the craziest nut in the world admits it.

Don't forget the mustard gas and the DU.

Ah, what a deft turn of phrase, what sparkling vocabulary, what original thinking! What utter blindness to the facts of the case!

BWAahahahahhHHAHAHAH!!!!!

Aug. 22, 2005 issue - The grieving room was arranged like a doctor's office. The families and loved ones of 33 soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan were summoned to a large waiting area at Fort Bragg, N.C. For three hours, they were rotated through five private rooms, where they met with President George W. Bush, accompanied by two Secret Service men and a photographer. Because the walls were thin, the families awaiting their turn could hear the crying inside.

President Bush was wearing "a huge smile," but his eyes were red and he looked drained by the time he got to the last widow, Crystal Owen, a third-grade schoolteacher who had lost her husband in Iraq. "Tell me about Mike," he said immediately. "I don't want my husband's death to be in vain," she told him. The president apologized repeatedly for her husband's death. When Owen began to cry, Bush grabbed her hands. "Don't worry, don't worry," he said, though his choking voice suggested that he had worries of his own. The president and the widow hugged. "It felt like he could have been my dad," Owen recalled to NEWSWEEK. "It was like we were old friends. It almost makes me sad. In a way, I wish he weren't the president, just so I could talk to him all the time."

Quite the contrast to the image Sheehan is trying to put forth.

Sheehan is a liar. A publicity-seeking liar who is at home in front of fawning hangers-on and others who admire her "professional victim" status

We have a President that lied about all the reasons for war. He lied to Congress and he lied to the American people. And, every time he opens his mouth out comes another lie, "died for a noble cause". He can't even tell Mrs. Sheehan what the noble cause is. The Pentagon lied about the Jessica Lynch story. The Pentagon lied about Tillman, the football player. The whole 9/11 story is a big lie. You should be used to lies. If a grieving mother after time of reflection and learning new facts (ie. downing street memo) see things differently then I find that reasonable.

Sheehan is a liar ? How so? Just because her expirience was different from some one elses?
Sticks and stones my friends, sticks and stones....

Here is someone who has lost her child -and you say its about publicity...There would have been no publicity if the yellow bellied vactioning coward had met with her when she arived....

Give me a break.

Bush has had time to perfect his performance on comforting the grieving parents, widows, widowers, children. It takes time to perfect sincerity from an insincere person.

He could care less. His agenda is to destroy America and if people don't get their heads on right that is exactly where he will succeed.

Saddam is gone. Now once again tell us what this noble cause is?

Both are admirable and correct. Cindy Sheehan understands that to stay in Iraq is to support an unwinnable war. It can't be won with this administration in the white house. They are incompetent. They are ruthless, cruel, lacking in compassion and short sighted.
Those who say we should stay are also correct. To leave is to walk away from a terrorist training ground we have created. It's a mess over there. Very unstable. And this administration allowed that to happen. Thank you Mr. President. We all appreciate your effort, or lack of it.
Mark my words, this president will walk out and say it’s what the American people want. No, better yet. They’ll walk out on everything in Iraq except the oil fields and our military will be there till the last drop is gone. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out their next move. You just have to figure out what they want and what they will do to get it.
Not a lot of nobility in that. Did the soldiers die in vain? No. They did their duty. They did what was asked of them. Bush and his group used that honor to duty to fight an illegal and unnecessary war. Was there any nobility in the effort? Bush doesn't care. That's the burden we all carry.

The Downing street memomos are at the heart.

"He said his son and other American troops will have died in vain if the United States abandons Iraq."

died in vain? Sadam husaine has been captured, his regime is over... in doing so no one has died in vain... however.. any more deaths, devoid of puropse will in fact be in vian..

"In Vietnam, they used to say a soldier got 'wasted' - not just his death, but his life in general," Lalush said. "Well, that's not true today in Iraq. They're dying for a good cause.""

what is the cause?
removing husaine, that was the cause.. the dude is out of power...the war is over... our contiuned pressence in iraq is soley to attempt to make sure a democracy is the kind of government the iraqies "choose" to have... at this point it's just silly... we aren't fighting global terrorists in iraq, we are simply providing american targets for local terrorists... the true global terrorists were in afganistan...we let them slip through our fingers... who the hell knows where they are now....
