President Must Make Time for Grieving Mother

Published on Saturday, August 13, 2005 by the Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon)

If Bush has time to go to fund-raisers, he has time for Cindy Sheehan

President Bush and Cindy Sheehan agree on one thing: her right to protest his policies and the war in Iraq. "She feels strongly about her position, and she has every right in the world to say what she believes. This is America," Bush said Thursday
For the sake of his presidency and their country, they should also agree on something else: To talk. Personally. Privately.

Her soldier son, Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed last year in an ambush five days after he arrived in Iraq. In recent days she has become the public face of angry, grieving parents and other anti-war protesters gathered near Bush's Texas ranch. She is demanding a personal meeting with the president.

The growing publicity, as well as the inevitable backlash against Sheehan, may distract from one essential point: Her quest is legitimate.

As a politician, Bush took time Friday to attend a fund-raiser for donors who already had contributed at least $25,000 to Republican causes. As the commander-in-chief, he surely can spare an hour or two for a personal conversation with a mother who lost her son in Iraq. Standing on opposite sides of the war debate, they need to hear from each other.

The White House says Bush has met with 900 relatives of the war dead, including talking with Sheehan at Ft. Lewis last year.

But most of his gatherings with Americans are scripted to include only faithful supporters, and he abstains from attending funerals for the war dead. How can a president -- how can any politician -- be so removed from the lives and sacrifices of the people he leads and serves?

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski attends every funeral, if he's invited, for an Oregon service member killed in the Iraq war.

No government meeting, no planned vacation, keeps the ex-Marine from that solemn duty.

Often he speaks at the services; always he talks with family members, calling them when he first learns of their child's sacrifice.

Kulongoski has participated in dozens of services and has made scores of phone calls. It's too much to expect the president to attend nearly 2,000 services. But why not one, or two, or 20?

And why not one more conversation with a grieving mother whose son faithfully followed the commander-in-chief's orders?

The Truth.. ...The last thing that president Bush wants to hear is that there is a citizen who disagrees with his way of thinkiing. Reality..... A woman with a functioning brain waiting outside his ranch wishing to speak with him. Illusion....Bush said that it would be easier if I were dictator, and I wouldn't have to explain anything tyo anyone. She does not exist, and she is a figment of my imagination. I shouldn't have to put up with this problem, maybe whe will go away. The truth.... Bush can't stand the truth.
You go Cindy and keep standing. For the truth will set you free!!Peace out

What this president has done to this democracy is unbelievable. Where is his humanity? He has a moment in time to connect with this women. His advisors must be giving him bad advice. What a media event! If he were to just listen. He is choosing to ignore her pain. The media and America will look at him as a bully. Why doesn't he get it? I am really wondering about what is going on.

A message to Cindy Sheehan
I realize how tragic your loss is and I know how much pain there is crushing your heart and I know the darkness that suddenly came to wrap your life and wipe away your dreams and I do feel the heat of your tears that won't dry until you find the answers to your question; why you lost your loved one?

I have heard your story and I understand that you have the full right to ask people to stand by your side and support your cause. At the beginning I told myself, this is yet another woman who lost a piece of her heart and the questions of war, peace and why are killing her everyday. To be frank to you the first thing I thought of was like "why should I listen or care to answer when there are thousands of other women in America, Iraq and Afghanistan who lost a son or a husband or a brother…

She would be working to genuinely get our troops home by promoting PEACE in the middle east. How much time has she wasted in Crawford? Bush has already met you, he is NOT coming out to meet you again. You have had an incredible 15 minutes of fame, unfortunately at the expense of your dear son's life. Why can't you use this fame to truly make a difference in Iraq? Why not promote women's freedom in Iraq? Our sisters there are in a fight for their lives for freedom from Sharia law. Until they have freedom, our sons and daughters will fight for them in countries all over this world. Instead of the stories of ongoing fights to sustain the freedom our sons and daughters have DIED for, (see ) we are provided only pathetic coverage of Cindy's pursuit of Bush, which will NOT be honored, and should NOT be honored because she is not the only parent, nor is she the only voice from the war. she received more from him than most.

while I understand and sympathize for her loss, she is doing NOTHING to honor the many dead who DID believe in this cause, regardless of their support OR disdain for Bush. If she is serious about ending the occupation, then she would pursue genuine solutions.

And, just what have you been doing for this cause? The illegal war started by the Bushies based on lies has to end. Are you doing anything useful as a human, other than insulting a grieving Mother? You and your like need to sign up and fight the war you so strongly believe in, so that others, who distain offering their offspring as cannon fodder to a new politician's war, can carry on the good cause. Where are the right to lifers now? They only care about SOME of the lives. They do not seem to object to being lied to about manipulated intelligence leading to a false war, killing thousands.

I am not surprised that you wish to remain anonymous. You are tragically misguided. In the unlikely event that you want to improve yourself I suggest that you turn off your computer and read a book. The Bible would be a good choice.

One question I would like you to ask Mr. Bush, whether face to face or in the news, is to make public the records of the Cheney Energy Committee meetings years ago so we know that the invasion of Iraq and the division of it's oil fields was not discussed and our soldiers were not sent there to die for oil.
Thank you.

Why does Cindy have to meet privately with Saddam Bush? Why does he not stand up with her before the American people and let her ask him about the war? She can ask about WMD? About 9/11? About Downing Street? About Abu Grahib? Are the rape-rooms gone? How come the military won't release the pictures and videos? Personally, I don't want to see them. It makes me sick to hear about them.

Was it for freedom?

My prayers go out to you and your supporters. This country is in chaos. We have lost our humanity. We are fighting to served the few rich amongst us. We are using our precious youth and fiscal resources to advance evil. Evil begets evil. We should have bombed Iraq with food, medicine, love and compassion for its people under its evil control (Saddam). Let's give peace a chance. God Bless you Cindy. My prayers go out to you.
A veteran for peace,
Sp/4 Bob Topor
