U.S. media produce excuses, not stories, on Downing Street Memo
Extra! July/August 2005
Julie Hollar and Peter Hart

Journalists typically condemn attempts to force their colleagues to disclose anonymous sources, saying that subpoenaing reporters will discourage efforts to expose government wrongdoing. But such warnings seem like self-puffery after one watches contemporary journalism in action: When clear evidence of wrongdoing emerges, with no anonymous sources required, major news outlets can still virtually ignore it.

A leaked British government document that first appeared in a London newspaper (Sunday Times, 5/1/05) bluntly stated that U.S. intelligence on Iraq was shaped to support the drive for war. Though the information rocked British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s re-election campaign when it was exposed, for weeks it received little attention in the U.S. media.

What was dubbed the Downing Street Memo was a record of a July 23, 2002 meeting in Blair’s Downing Street office with the prime minister’s top advisors. The meeting was held to discuss Bush administration policy on Iraq, and the likelihood that Britain would support a U.S. invasion. “It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided,

"the information [DSM] rocked British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s re-election campaign when it was exposed"...

Apart from its initial airing in The Times a few days before the general election, and a follow up article in the same newspaper a few weeks later, the Memo has rarely been reported upon here in the UK. Indeed only a very few of the general public here seem to know of its existence at all.

There appears to be a global media blackout on reporting about the Memo and its contents. Who's controlling the press?

The press in the USA is controlled by the right-wing party. The rest of us have little to nothing being reported on our behalf.

I suspect you have the same problem in Britain.

how have we let the momentum die on this?! don't let this story go away! (or the Rove thing for that matter...)
GO! TELL IT FROM THE MOUNTAINTOP!

I continue to be incredulous at the lack of knowledge by the American people by the PNAC and its insidious mark on current events in the world. For all the harm it has done, including the murder of tens of thousands of people in Iraq, hardly anyone knows about the PNAC or "Project for the New American Century". Hitler at least had to have his propagandists market the Nazi Party and swastika symbol and grand Roman-style marching ceremonies to get the German people "pumped" for war.
The PNAC seemed to just use Karl Rove and spin, and a few "coincidental" events, and there you go>>> the American people bought the lies to war hook , line and sinker. You would have thunk they stuck micro-chips in our brains and erased any cognitive knowledge of the PNAC. PNAC should be a HOUSEHOLD WORD by now !

Talk about your "Old News" that's never been told !!!@#$%^&*

This is what the MSM needs to know NOW. Why then are those in Crawford not taking full advantage of this? Is this mission just an attempt to somehow soften Bush's cold black heart? If so, it is a waste of time to me. Bush was known as Governor Death in Texas. For anyone to think he even gives a damn about anyone who has died in Iraq, is well, naive. And while media coverage of this perhaps has heightened the fervor against the war, I still would like to know what we are going to do about them? And I still haven't seen the words Downing Street Memo or HR 375 in any media report about this vigil. I know Ms. Sheehan wants closure for the death of her son ( and I don't begrudge her that), but shouldn't those there also be mentioning this?

I really don't mean to sounf flippamt, but this is not just about the loss of Ms. Sheehan's son, this is about the loss of all of those who continue to die there even today, and this also is about all those who are still here, who may one day have to go in a draft if this is allowed to continue. I doubt this vigil will end the war. It may in months ahead have an effect on troop levels ( especially as the 2006 elections come closer) but a resolution was already read by UN agencies against Iran. We must face facts that the Neocon PNAC agenda is in full mode, and while I support Ms. Sheehan's conviction regarding her son, there is a big picture here, and it is a Neocon ideology that will continue to kill even if we remove every troop from Iraq.... we then need to remove those who sent them there from power!

That is why I was truly hoping to see much more from Crawford in the way of that truth than we are seeing. Again, I understand the grief as a mother, but if we are to EVER truly bring these people to justice, it has to go much deeper than this. This is just my view, so please be gentle with me. I notice on certain blogs now that giving this opinion can get you labelled a pro-war asshat. Go figure. Time for perspective in my view.

How does any government fall? What caused the greatest civilizations to collapse upon themselves? ...GREED.
We in the United Staes have the greatest constitution ever written -but our representatives in all branches of government are being corrupted by corporate lobbyists. Congress looks more as a brothel than it does a law making, constitution defending group of Americans.
Our elections are a joke. Republican or Democrat, we need election reform - NOW. Even the mere possibility of tampering needs to be properly addressed.
We The People need to unite - Americans; not divided by the parties, race or religion. To solve our domestic problems we need demand only truth. Truth in government - Americans can never settle for less: Can you?

We The People need to unite - Americans; not divided by the parties, race or religion. To solve our domestic problems we need demand only truth. Truth in government

It si interesting that you wold say that. It is the same position held by our first ever president, George Washington. He was given the choice to rule as a king, but he decided to serve the people that he had helped to bring freedom.

Don't let attention on Crawford take your focus off the big picture or you will be doing Rove's work for him. Why have gas prices skyrocketed at this exact point in time? Same as all their other distractions, to take your eyes off of what it is they are up to. They don't want us to be looking at the war and boy does this give the media distraction material. What was happening in Iraq during Shiavo? They beat 26 prisoners to death in Abu Graib. All we got to hear about later was the attack on the prison by "insurgents". What was the first diversion? Remember bush's sagging poll numbers before 9-11? Then it was the false story about trashed Air Force One and all the "w" keys. A complete fabrication where the press eagerly played their role in duping us. Halliburton is guilty of defrauding the government along with outright embezzlement of billions. What did we hear about??? OIL For FOOD scandal. What ever happened to Sibel Edmonds? A brief flash and she was exiled from our senses as well. Wilson? We never would have heard of him again if it hadn’t been for the CIA investigating Rove.
We must keep on this like bulldogs on a bone. There are so many of us and so few of them we can only succeed.

Why do you think the bloggers are going wild? They know she has knowledge of ALL the aspects of the road paved with LIES to Iraq. She is very articulate through her grief. She has a very simple message>>>THE TRUTH. It's easy for her to keep it all straight in her head because she knows the WHOLE TRUTH. So do we, so what's the difference? Cindy added the element of PASSION FOR TRUTH, just what the OUT OF IRAQ movement needs. We can keep our eyes on ALL the aspects of the TRUTH that you mentioned>>> AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO INFORM OUR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS>>>it's a lot easier now to inform people about every aspect of the TRUTH now that Cindy has broken the ice with PASSION!!! Now we can PASSIONATELY TELL & EMAIL THE TRUTH>>> The news at Crawford made the front page of my hometown paper the other day, and it mentioned Cindy's statement about the OIL, so I knew everyone knew. Soooo, I was declaring my freedom from Bush and saying "YEEHAW, LET'S GO TO CRAWFORD!!!" at a fast food restaurant the other day >>> the man behind the counter was clapping and cheering me on because he thought it was so great, and he was agreeing with me !!! We were laughing and shaking hands!!!
The PASSION is the drive of TRUTH and the momentum will not stop now. Even the Neocons cannot keep track of millions and millions of people around the world who are PASSIONATE ABOUT THE TRUTH ABOUT THE LIES.

OUT THE PNAC SO WE CAN GET OUT OF IRAQ

America, especially it's citizens and institutions, are these days still claiming that this country has far better advantages for the average person trying to live a prosperous life than anyplace else on earth. Yet when "reality" (not a show!) comes to light upon those wanting to be American citizens, they slowly are seeing that it's not all that is cracked up to be. The sense that is going on these days is that our diluted and spoiled culture and the apethetic and corrupt
governments and institutions that have established a "beachhead" for so many generations in this country has now transformed themselves into a "what's in it for me?" generation.

The media's refusal, or lack of interest, in covering the DSM is proof that they are not only coddling to the right-wing bigwigs running the mass communications industry but also to the supermarket tabloid-hungry ignorant cowards that claim that they are patriotic with their yellow ribbon magnets and flaunting every red, white and blue bumpersticker cliches that you see on their homes and cars. With all the indications being so obvious as to how Washington's foreign policy for the past half century, particularly with the Middle East, has resulted into hatred from the Arab world and our weakness to supply and demand of every corporate gimmick from gas-guzzling vehicles to cell phones that are thrown at us as though we're a guinea pig for their research and development schemes, have put this country in very grave danger not only to a possible terrorist attack but to the lack of inspiration to question and defy propaganda and rhetoric about foreign policy, civil rights, access to various forms of information and the proper use of military action as a last resort from both our government and the mass media.

In a nutshell, America needs to wake the F--- UP now and stand for what is not only right but substantial to the existance of our country and it's ideals. Stop relying on the mainstream media, the Old Glory stickers, Democrats and a few caring Republicans or whatever Disneyland fantasy that makes you safe and secure from the so-called "angry dissenters" in the world and start learning about the truth of what is really happening and excercising proper judgement and having a clear conscious. It is that "opportunity" in this land of our's that will define us, properly prepare us for the dreadfully greater challenges that lie before us and impress upon the many that truly want to be a part of America for generations to come.

Four Star Army General Fired For Alleged Sexual Misconduct; Some Say He May Have Been Ousted For Attempting To Thwart The Bush Administration Plans To Strike Iran

General Kevin P. Byrnes was relieved of his duties Tuesday, only the third four star officer to be fired in more than 15 years. Observers speculated there are much deeper reasons behind the firing of the high-ranking officer said to be against the administration's escalating war policies.

Sabers are rattling deep within the highest-levels of the U.S. military as for the first time in more than a decade a four star officer was relieved of his duties, Army officials announced Tuesday.

Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes was relieved for personal conduct reasons as the Pentagon Inspector General’s Office has been investigating possible sexual misconduct by Byres for several months.

“The investigation is complete but it is yet to be determined if the general will be only demoted or charged criminally,
