Newsweek Poll Shows Majority Supports Impeachment

By David Swanson

This Newsweek article gives one hell of a spin to its effort not to report what it is reporting, namely that a Newsweek poll finds a majority of Americans wanting impeachment, and half of Democrats wanting it to be a top priority. Read this a few times until you figure out what it's saying:

"Other parts of a potential Democratic agenda receive less support, especially calls to impeach Bush: 47 percent of Democrats say that should be a “top priority,” but only 28 percent of all Americans say it should be, 23 percent say it should be a lower priority and nearly half, 44 percent, say it should not be done. (Five percent of Republicans say it should be a top priority and 15 percent of Republicans say it should be a lower priority; 78 percent oppose impeachment.)"

and if you posed this question; "would you favor trying the president, vice president, and members of his cabinet for TREASON, if they were to be convicted, would you favor the DEATH PENALTY for them??"

overwhelmingly, even amongst those of us who don't like the death penalty, I believe the answer would be an overwhelming; "YES!!!" to the death penalty for their treason.

so, let's get the gallows ready. we have alot of hanging to do (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Feith, Hadley, Rice, Libby, Abrams, Wolfowitz, et-al)

Speaking as a US citizen, a Democrat, and a pacifist, I think you'd find you're wrong. A large part of the reason I think Bush needs to be out is that he's behind the deaths of an ever-growing number of people. Would I ask for his death in return? Nope. I don't believe in execution. I suppose you could even say I'm pro-life that way. Well, would you look at that?

most of these thugs and murderers are retreads from past murderous regimes in the white house and have been tried, convicted, then pardoned by other murderers like Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. they just keep coming back over and over again and doing incalculable harm to the nation, therefore they must be dead to render them inert and unable to harm us. does this mean that the death penalty makes sense for others? no, it does not. but genocide, mass murder, and crimes against this nation that do indeed rise to the level of high treason, is sufficiently over the edge to merit them being put to death by hanging.

actually, be best to shoot them up against a wall like common street curs as they are, but the hanging is particularly necessary to show everyone what mass murdering and being very evil all your life, buys you a nice fresh noose. so, you're right, execution is not the answer, but they earned the exception to that. it diminishes us for having to do that to them, but we must or they'll be back, over and over again, and they'll do more mass murdering and treason into infinity if they don't get stopped permanently, and a jail cell is just not permanent enough. a noose sure as hell is.

Amen, amen, I say to you, brother! And add Ashcroft and Gonzalez to your list while you are at it! I think the death penalty is abhorrent, but for Bush & Co. I would make the one exception! I say censure, impeach, remove from office, indict, arrest, try and hang! These are dangerous, dangerouos people! And why the world has stood silently by, allowing them to get away with virtually murder, is totally mindboggling to me! Why, oh why, and how, oh how, has Bush managed to subdue the American people into putting up with all that he has perpetrated against the world?! What MAGIC POTION does he possess to subdue us into silence while he has foisted his crimes upon the world? Such arrogance--refusing to talk to nations like N. Korea and certain countries of the Middle East! Doing away with environmental regulations, further polluting the earth; robbing Americans of the U.S. Treasury; sending more and more jobs overseas; consulting with and listening to the corrupt corporations and his buddy lobbyists instead of the American people; giving more and more tax cuts to the already filthy rich; totally ignoring the aftermath of the hurricane in New Orleans, when he had vital information they could have used before the hurricane hit; stealing two presidential elections and further attempting to foul other elections; attacking Iraq under false pretenses and plotting to attack Iran as well...the list goes on and on! Bush thinks he has gotten away with all of this, but THINKING PEOPLE IN THIS NATION have been watching and taking all into account. Eternal darkness would not be punishment enough for Bush and Co.! Enough is enough already! Bush should have been thrown out of office years ago!

Even the Democrats will be 'so called ' the majority as of 07,,,Bush administration, has put us in Iraq so deep,,,we are doomed for years to come !!,,,An they will all be outa office in two years,,collecting their well earned pensions, for the rest of their lives,,,an nothing will ever be done from that day on,,except all the talk that goes on daily ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

And don't forget Rule One when dealing with serial murderers, the undead and other tyrannical beings:

Chop off their heads and burn separately

Agree with Jonas. The "retreads" will always exist somewhere. It's the tough job of "free people" to keep them down without killing them,
else we violate the the highest moral ground known - supported by all ethical groups and progressive religious groups I know. Murder is murder.

Hello, Mr. Wisser,

In Bush's case I would make the exception. He is a dangerous, dangerous man and the entire world has stood idly by letting him get away with virtually the murder of thousands upon thousands of people. What MAGIC POTION does Bush possess that he has been able to subdue the entire world into inaction, with the exception, that is, of the people of Iraq taking matters into their own hands to push the Americans out?! What insanity! It boggles my mind that we have all remained silent while Bush & Co. have taken over the world, cowtowing to the rich corporations, despoiling the environment and undoing years of environmental regulations, ignoring countries like N. Korea and countries of the Middle East, refusing to talk to them--what arrogance!--stealing the U.S. Treasury, raising the deficit to unbelievable proportions, giving tax cut after tax cut to the filthy rich, allowing American jobs to go to other countries further destroying the Middle Class in America...enough already!!! Throw the bums out! Censure, impeach, indict, arrest, try and hang, if necessary! Get rid of this blight upon the American landscape!

Personally I abhor the death sentence and executions, but for Bush I would make the one exception! Obviously, there is no end to what this man would do if given free license to continue to do so! How many other countries would we now be at "war" with if the world had not put its foot down once again?

I support impeaching every one of this administration and then the proper punishment to the crime convicted of.

Yes, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove, Powell, etc. should be tried for their crimes and executed. And not only them but also those who conspired with their criminal aims through propaganda, such as Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. The U.S. itself established the precedent with the Nuremberg trials: leaders of a government that engages in a war of aggression and other crimes against humanity MUST PAY, even if their crimes were committed under color of law.

The idea that two years from now George W. Bush will retire to a life of well-paid speaking engagements, playing golf, and destroying the vegetation on his ranch with a chainsaw, fills anyone who has a sense of justice with disgust. The planet should be cleansed of him, his co-conspirators, and their enablers, not only for the sake of justice but also as a warning for individuals of their ilk that they cannot get away with lying the country into war, stealing elections and abrogating dictatorial powers to themselves.

Right on! The idea of all that these people have gotten away with is totally mindboggling and insane! Restore sanity to America! Censure, impeach, idict, arrest, try and sentence Bush & Co. to eternal darkness forevermore!

Do you REALLY think anyone is going to PAY George W. Bush to give a speech after he is out of office??? Hell, the guy can't get even half a sentence out without hesitating, having to look at cue cards, having to read a monitor! I think a fitting punishment for Bush would be if he leaves office and the world just ignores him! Wouldn't it be funny--and oh so deserved--if no one comes calling and ever invites him to give a "speech"?! (Maybe if they do, he could read to them "My Pet Goat"!)

It is disturbing that if Bush is impeached it will be the wiretap issue that did it and not the fact that he is directly responsible for as many unnecessary American deaths as Oama bin Laden, not to mention the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis.

Paul Shilton/Canada

i'm no mathematician, but i think that leaves 56% of americans favoring impeachment!! why is such an option off the table?? are we already no longer a democracy?

We have never been a democracy. We're a Republic, which means we elect rich, established, polished (supposedly), educated (supposedly), honorable (ideally) individuals to think for us in terms of the national agenda, including impeachment. The American public does not have, and never will without an Amendment to the Constitution, a say in who gets impeached and convicted beyond voting for our Congresssional representatives.
