A Voice Crying in the Wilderness

by Gary Hart
The Huffington Post

If democracy only works when there is open discussion of opposing ideas and policies, and if the opposition party, in this case the Democrats, has hand-cuffed, blind-folded, gagged, and hog-tied itself to a failed invasion and occupation in the Middle East, where will the expanding majority of Americans look for a representative, a spokesperson, a voice for their anger, frustration, and distrust at being misled?

The circumstances suggest it should be a Senate or House Democratic leader, a recognized authority on foreign policy constantly seen on the Sunday talk shows, certainly one of the many "leaders"? lining up to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 2008.

Strangely, no one in any of those categories comes to mind. Their voices are silent. Thus, both they and the party they claim or presume to represent look dumbstruck, awkward, pitiful, and timid. Where the single greatest issue of the day, and one of the most potent issues of our time, is concerned, there is no courageous opposition.

Meanwhile, the caskets keep coming home…with no public official to greet them or to respect them. They are the forgotten dead and they represent thousands more of the even more forgotten wounded.

But wait. There is someone to hold the emperor to account. There is someone willing to look ridiculous, to be mocked and made a fool of, to challenge the conventional wisdom of the court.

She, unfortunately, is not a Senator. She is not a party leader. She is not in the regular establishment Rolodex of the Sunday talk producers. Yet, she holds the highest office available in a republic, that of citizen.

And to the embarrassment of both Republican and Democratic establishments, she takes that office more seriously than they—the silent "leaders"?—do theirs. When the last Marine leaves Iraq, dead or alive, she can claim more credit than them all. Because of the courage of one brave woman, she quite possible will have had more to do with finally bringing this great nation back to its senses... and to its principles.

Remember her name. It is Cindy Sheehan.

...will look a real Democrat in a 3rd party. Representative John Conyers and 30-40 other House Democrats have been trying to get heard there, but not much noise coming out of the Senate these days, and nothing from past Democrat VIPs--nothing that I've been able to hear, anyway. It seems like the Democrats have become the Cautiouscrats. Maybe there's something to hope for in the PDA, but I've had it with the DLC.

Cindy has more strength and patriotism than most members of the Senate and the House. I feel the Democrats, who are supposed to be representing us, have just been sleeping in their chairs; they never speak up or do anything to expose the lies and hypocrisy of this administration! Where are our leaders? I think it's time for more people, like Paul Hackett of Ohio, who have no political background and aren't afraid to speak the truth to get out there and run for public office. They would not be corrupted by lobbyists and corporations. Perhaps then, we could get some honest representation in Washington!
Cindy, how about you?

That guy Cindy wants to talk to doesn't give a rats ass about what people think, now that he has his votes and second term, and you can't embarrass arrogant people. August will end and none of this will come to fruition until the issues of lying to Congress and the American people about reasons to send troops to war MAKE IT TO THE FLOOR OF CONGRESS for inquiry, and a majority of Congress votes to draw up articles of impeachment. Until then, he could come out tomorrow and even say, yeah I did wrong and deserve impeachment, and still he wouldn't be held to account until Congress puts the inquiries it should into motion.

It will take enough Cindy Sheehan's as there are Congresspersons turning a blind eye to this, setting up in Congressperson's driveway's like they are set up in Crawford,TX, to effectively PUT THE PRESSURE WHERE IT WILL COUNT. That's a tall order, and unlikely.

The depressing thing about it all is that the Congresspersons have all the evidence, and shouldn't need prompting from us. If they are afraid because they voted for the war, we'll excuse them on that, if they would just do the job we elected them to do and hold the liars accountable. While Congress strung up Nixon for syping on the other party, and Clinton for taking an unauthorized sex break in the office, these things were like, as they say, "storms in a teapot".
Now we have REAL and GRUESOME CONSEQUENCES of a president lying, where troops were sent to die and leave a family behind on the basis of patent lies--and there's little reaction.

THAT is the disturbing part for this country: A president's lying about anything should not be tolerated by any U.S. citizen regardless of political party, but it is and the MECHANISM TO CORRECT IT, Congress, is largely letting it happen.

Not all in Congress are avoiding the problem. Some have boldly told it like it is and identified the problem clearly: Ted Kennedy said even before the Downing Street Memo's came to light that the Iraq war was "a fraud". John Conyers, Barbara Lee, John Kerry, and others of courage have spoken out, but their hands are tied until they can have enough of their complacent colleague's vote for an INQUIRY (such as the measure Rep. Barbara Lee has put forth) to have the issues presented to them in Congress where they can probe them, expose the fraud, and vote for impeachment. Until then, while the protests are a nag to the president, he and his staff can dance around the issues and deflect them with spin shots, and we may as well spit into the wind.

Only until the people are informed--and the EVIDENCE IS MADE JOLTINGLY CLEAR to them through the DSM and other documents--will they wake up and feel moved to spur on the Congress to do something.

That is why, since the Crawford protest has the attention of the American people--It should use that advantage to MAKE KNOWN THE EVIDENCE of the lies and manipulation that got us into the Iraq war and caused so much needless heartache to so many.

The voice in the wilderness is Cindy Sheehan. Senators and Congressmen your presence in Crawford Texas would be greatly appreciated. Giving your support with your presence to Cindy Sheehan is the sign of leaders who really care for the truth about Karl Rove, the truth about the Downing Street Minutes. An action like that from you, our representatives, Senators and Congressman, is the healing we need to have. An action like this is the sign of loving and standing up for what this country was founded on. You will show us that your patriotism goes beyond being Republican, Democrat, Independent, Green, Socialist and others. We need to see you together as true patriots givng Cindy Sheehan united support.
