Green Party Peace Action Committee Issues Statement of Support

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Peace Action Committee of the Green Party of the United States (GPAX) has issued a statement of support for Cindy Sheehan, co-founder of Gold Star Families For Peace, in her vigil near the vacation home of President George W. Bush in Crawford, Texas. The text of the statement follows below.

Ms. Sheehan is the mother of Casey Sheehan, who was killed in combat in Sadr City in 2004, a few days after arriving in Iraq. Over 1,800 U.S. troops and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have been killed in the U.S. invasion and occupation.

Greens called Ms. Sheehan's protest a unique challenge to all Americans to speak out against the Bush Administration's betrayal of the trust of the American people and reckless disregard for American and Iraqi lives.

"The Bush Administration betrayed the trust of the American people, especially those serving in the armed forces in Iraq, when it launched a war based on fraudulent premises: WMDs that didn't exist, forged evidence of nuclear weapons deals, deceptive claims that Saddam Hussein colluded with al-Qaeda," said Jody Grage Haug, Peace Action Committee member and co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. "We must also hold Democrats responsible, since many of them supported the war and who joined with Republicans in surrendering Congress's constitutional power to declare war to the White House in October, 2002."

Text of the GPAX statement:

The Peace Action Committee of the Green Party of the United States applauds and supports the brave protest vigil taking place at the vacation home of President George W. Bush in Crawford, Texas by Cindy Sheehan, mother of Casey Sheehan who was killed in combat on 4/4/04 in Sadr City five days after arriving in Iraq. We insist that President Bush meet with Ms. Sheehan and other individuals who have firsthand experienced the pain of a profound loss resulting from the current invasion and occupation of Iraq. Our leaders should not hide from the reality of these grave losses resulting from a war based on unsubstantiated pretenses. The Peace Action Committee agrees with Cindy's quote: "Bring Our Troops Home IMMEDIATELY."

I respect your grief and your loss. However, I think you are dishonoring your son's convictions and the pride he had for his country. I am sure you are enjoying all the attention you are getting..........shame on you........DK

Is that short for Dick?

Apparently you do not understand the reasons for this great vigil that Cindy has started. One must first figure out why we went to war in Iraq to begin with. The reasons that were given to Congress and the American people by the present Administration was that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and they had ties to Al Queada. Well as we have found out in resent months that these accusations of this Administration are false. Of all of the mounting evidence that has come out one needs to read the Downing Street Memo's. After looking into all of the evidence I am sure one will figure out that everything that was told to Congress and the American people were all lies. I implore everyone in doubt to really do some reading and do some soul searching and tell me if you still feel the way you did before you looked into the evidence. I was EXTREMELLY skeptical about all of it until I started looking into it. But now it has me so outraged that our government has lied to us that some times I do not know what to do with myself. And if you want to do some real investigating you will also find out how Bush KILLED nearly 3,000 on September 11, 2001. Here are just a couple of websites to get you started into 911.

DK, how can you second guess Casey's mother in how she continues the memory and legacy of her son. Who are you to say that Cindy's actions are not exactly what Casey would have wanted her to do. Speak for yourself, do not pretend to know the thoughts or intentions of someone you did not know, you did not raise, and you did not bury.
Also, you need to learn what pride in one's country really means. It doesn't mean you blindly follow the president because he is the president. My pride in my country stems from my repect for the constituion, the founding principles of this country. When those principles or ideas are ignored or trampled on, then it is my duty to speak out, because I have pride in my country. Peace is not unpatriotic!

Questioning your government when it is conducting an illegal war of aggression is one of the highest forms of patriotism. The attention Cindy is seeking is that of the citizens of this country, who have been denied by our corporate media the full facts of this unlawful invasion and occupation of a soverign state. Her actions are forcing the media to give exposure to the lies and manipulated intelligence that convinced Congress to grant this misguided president the power to wage an undeclared war in our names. I am grateful to her for her courage and integrity, as I am sure her son would be.
